Sketchbook Day 1

Guh. It is really clear I need this practice. Oh well, time to head back to the rag and bone man of the heart.

"rag and bone man"

Thank you for introducing me to this phrase.

It's cool to see other people make notes in their sketchbooks as much as I do.

And the couple reminds me a little of Quentin Blake's style.

I can see the Quentin Blake, but it really reminds me of Jason Turner's work.

Guys, I was just trying to go for another one of my Thurbers. Just a little one. Remember those? Dang.

The rag and bone man of the heart bit is from this poem I'm always thinking about whenever I'm trying to dredge up creativity again after a long absence, Yeats' The Circus Animals Desertion because that's exactly what it's about. I actually misquote it a bunch, but the actual line goes:

Those masterful images because complete
Grew in pure mind, but out of what began?
A mound of refuse or the sweepings of a street,
Old kettles, old bottles, and a broken can,
Old iron, old bones, old rags, that raving slut
Who keeps the till. Now that my ladder's gone,
I must lie down where all the ladders start
In the foul rag and bone shop of the heart.

As for my sketchbook, it's also my journal. I write down my dreams every morning, my daily to-do list at work, and I work out technical details about how writers put stories together and such.

arg! poetry! I can't escape it!

It is something I'm going to tuck away, though. :)

Believe me, I know. Poetry will hunt you down like a dog despite all your efforts to avoid it.

It'll be good to actually be drawing again in a couple of weeks when it's not like picking a scab.

Of course! Something had to get me off my duff. Thanks so much for setting all this nonsense up!
