Official Stumptown Wrap-Up, Part 1
Guys, here are a few more details about Team Atrox's 2008 Stumptown adventure!

Five of us (me, Leslie, Emory, Paul, and Frank) drove up to Portland from LA in a big honkin' van we rented. We drove up the 5 and made good time, arriving in Portland Friday afternoon. Paul's aunt was kind enough to let us crash at her luxurious home, so we dropped off our bags and headed into the city to meet up with Erika Moen to grab dinner and Voodoo Doughnut or two. Erika was by our side through most of our weekend adventures, so feel free to picture her as part of the group whenever I say 'we' from now on. Her knowledge of Portland geography was particularly essential for us to get, uh, anywhere in the city.

After dinner we headed to the The Concourse to set up our table. Fortunately Paul and I remembered our drills and were able to set up our PVC stand in record time. Leslie, of course, was busy setting up her Beastlies. After setting up, we headed over to the Guapo Comics party. Joining us was Molly Hahn, who we met at the set-up and needed a lift to the gathering. Fortunately, we had a big-ass van! We arrived at Guapo just in time to see (or hear, rather. It was a packed house and we were way in the back) Sarah Glidden receive the Maisie Kukoc Award. We listened to a few of the comics readings, then dropped off Molly and Erika and headed back to base camp.

The next day we got up bright and early to start the Con proper. We had a killer table position right near the main entrance. Erika's table was to our left, and she shared a table with Meredith Gran, to whom I never introduced myself the whole weekend, because I am an asshole. But she gets an A+ for putting up with all our sprawling crap taking up space behind her back all weekend. On our right was Leia Weathington, who immediately endeared herself to us with her potty mouth and complimentary dumplings.

The con itself was busy, busy, busy, especially the first day. Leslie sold a ton of Beastlies, and we had two new Atrox minis debut at the con, as well as the first collection of High-Quality Erotic Art. Let me tell you, that title sure got people's attention. Of course, some of that attention was mothers immediately steering their children away from our table, but several people did pick it up and take a look. Many seemed amused, but there were also people who were clearly disappointed (or pissed), much like the many Europeans who find the site through Google every day. It's just a joke title, folks, sorry.

Here's a fun story. Before we left on our trip, Leslie convinced me to buy a stamp to use should anyone want me to sign their mini. The stamp featured a shopping bag with "I'd rather be shopping" in delicate cursive next to it. When some lady bought a mini, Frank encouraged her to get me to sign it, so I excitedly broke out the stamp, loaded up with ink... and then proceeded to mash it onto the mini like I was six years old or something. Needless to say, the stamp was horribly smudged. My second attempt was only marginally better. The rest of the Team made fun of me, as is the Team Atrox way, so I practiced the stamp a few more times on some scratch paper. No one else wanted a signature that weekend.

Saturday night we grabbed some dinner and head over to the Cosmic Monkey for the Stumptown Trophy Awards. Cosmic Monkey is a really awesome shop. I'm definitely interested in going there when it is not full of drunken comics creators. Not that I don't love drunken comics creators. Anyway, Erika, in case you hadn't heard, totally CLEANED UP at the Trophy Awards, getting not one, not two, but THREE statues! Go, Erika, go!

Wow, this is taking longer than I thought it would. Stay tuned for more!
