The Lost Frontier Videos
Hey guys, so some guy got a hold of the Lost Frontier demo and has the means to post direct feed videos, so he did! Included in it is the previous unseen Dark Daxter (there have been some screenshots and that article on IGN, bit I haven't seen video before this).

He wrote a short hands-on with the game over here, with the videos embedded.

The videos in questions are:

Oh my god this looks awful. D:

I have been trying to be optimistic but ... that engine is horrendous, Daxter is a goddamn jewel compared to this. D:

DAXTER PUSH BUTTON! Oh wow. XD

The first one looks kinda cool, but I'm not too sure what to think of the Dark Dax level. I couldn't stop laughing long enough to pay attention. I want this to be awesome, but I have a feeling it's not gonna be. Not that it matters or anything cause I'm still gonna buy it the day it comes out and play the heck out of it.

The Dark Daxter....

I don't think I will be touching this game at all. That's totally turned me off. >_>

Ugh.

I am seriously just SO disappointed. I tried really, really hard to be an optimist but this? I actually don't even want to buy it now. I will, because I'm a franchise whore, but I'm really kind of resentful at the idea of giving them money for this.

Yeah, I'm the same. I wasn't happy on first impressions but people kept saying 'be fair and wait for it to come out' so I tried but this...it breaks canon, it looks awful, it sounds awful, the designs really bug me (Dark Daxter looks so much like a Rip of one of the mutants from the 2nd TMNT live action film), it's just a whole mess in my eyes.

I really doubt I will be putting any money towards this at all. Even with Max Casella in it - I'd rather go out and buy another one of his movies instead to show him my support.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who's not fond of this - makes me remember why I love this fandom. ♥

The canon breaking is what's killing me; there's absolutely NO reason whatsoever that Dark Eco should make Daxter transform. It took Jak years of constant testing to get there, and it took Gol just as long. Not to mention Daxter took a bath in the damn stuff and didn't transform.

It's really awful. I'm so disappointed. I just hope NDI really does go ahead and make a kick ass PS3 game just to end the franchise on a high note. Jak X was pretty good, Daxter was surprisingly good but still not quite as good as NDI's offerings.

I swear I am so damn tempted to drive over there on Monday and just sit in their lobby and stare at the Jak statue to get my faith back. I will take bets on how long it takes for them to kick me out.

Also we will ALWAYS have our kickass fandom, bb. It is the best fandom. ♥

Yup, yup. Several people have been pointing out the flaw so it's not like fans don't take notice of this. It was pretty big plot points in some of the past NDI games too, not like a little side-note thing.

We can always hope for an awesome NDI PS3 project, though. The idea of Bob Rafei no longer working with the team on the character designs does sadden me, but I still have faith - after all the company KNOWS the games by heart and loves them like a second child. If they do to Jak on the PS3 what Insomniac did with Ratchet and Clank on the PS3, then it would rock my world!

It is a lovely fandom! ;_; You guys rooooooccckkk~! ♥

Eeeeeexaaaaactly! It just ... I mean seriously, they could have easily hired a consultant. Fuck, I'd have worked for free! XD Most of us spot stuff that I'm sure even got past the developers, we could easily have found flaws and pointed them out in the early design stages. There's really no excuse for this kind of canon butchery.

I think NDI will do great. Losing Rafei is awful, he had such an influence on the designs. But Jak X was still awesome, they stayed really true to the spirit of his art and did a pretty fantastic job, so I have faith that they could uphold that with a new game.

Also pffffffffft, what are you talking about "you guys"? You draw like, some of the best damn art in the fandom. I still love that pic of Razer after he loses to Jak, eating ice-cream in his bunny slippers. XD ♥

Very true. There's some franchises who've come back recently and have brought on the game's original creators and such for insight to make sure they're doing a good job with it. If that was the case with this game, I'd like to know who on earth gave the thumbs-up to some of this stuff, though I don't think anyone from NDI did.

Actually, Rafei DID work on Jak X. XD He did all the character design for it - it was/is all on his website (is that still up? I know it went down at one stage). He left either after Jak X or the 1st Uncharted game, I believe. So thus far, he's had input in all Jak-related games sans Daxter.

Psssh, there are some people in the fandom who utterly hate me and my art. X3 I want to go back and do some Jak art later with the stuff I've learned taking a break from it for a while, we'll see. Glad you liked the past stuff, at least. :3 Always nice to know someone was entertained by my doodles. ^^

Oh crap, you're absolutely right about Rafei working on X! And yes, the art is still up there. I think I confused myself at all the sketches of Blitz et al that clearly weren't his designs. XD

Bawwww, I don't know why anyone would hate you for your art, I love it! I've been watching you and Eno on dA for a while now, even though there's not been any Jak art for a while. I'd love to see you do more! 8D

What the ever-loving fuck.

I'm still going to end up buying it, and as much as I want to give HIG the benefit of the doubt... I'm not feeling too hopeful after seeing that demo. The caveman-speak is what really did it for me... who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?

This completely turned into a stream of thought for the videos and got preeeetty long, so sorry. XD

Well that guy taunting Jak in the first level is definitely Mr. Pirate, so at lest we now know his name. :/

Daxter is really bugging me in the first one. It's obviously Max Casella but the energy is completely different. He sounds like he's bored and disinterested in what's going on around him.

Also: I SEE PRECURSOR ORBS. They look HUGE, geeze. The new rendering for the spare ammo is also gigantic.

The music sounds like a ripoff of Pirates of the Caribbean. And I really, really don't like the enemies. The robots look like something out of Ratchet and Clank and aren't anything like what we've seen in J&D before. I don't even know what those armadillo things are supposed to be.

Second vid:

DAXTER PUSH BUTTON >XE

I love it for being all fourth-wall breaking, but still. At least he's not saying "Dark Daxter" and I got my earlier wish. And then it goes on for way, waaaaay too long and gets kinda annoying.

Pretty much I'm not impressed with Dark Daxter. At all. The Dark form talking seems rather... I dunno, it's weird to me. Phoenix seems to be copying Erol in fighting Jak for Keira's attention and from the sound of the dialogue, Keira's not doing anything to deter him. Think it's possible it's David Herman voicing him?

Also: The more I see articles and reviews for this game, the more they only say Lost Frontier is for PSP. Are people just getting the demo of the PSP version, or has HIG given up on making it a PS2 port? Because if it comes out only for PSP I am not getting it.

It's for the PS2, but it is being developed for the PSP and is just ported to the PS2. Remember how shitty Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank looked on the PS2? It'll be like that.

Good gawd, what's with the non-stop bitching about this game? I, for one, actually like how it looks and am looking forward to playing it. What I've seen reminds me of the first game in the franchise, which has always been my favorite. And forget not that it's for the PSP, not just the PS2, so of course you're not going to get PS3 style graphics.

Well, whatever. I may be in the minority, but I'm eagerly awaiting a continuation of the actual story I enjoyed (as opposed to the racing game which seemed mostly like a pointless side plot to me).

What about this game seems like the first one? All I've seen has been very gun oriented. And the Dark Daxter and flying parts certainly aren't reminiscent of TPL.

I'm not saying this game will be bad, but it definitely doesn't seem like a return to form.

The simpler character design, Daxter's commentary, the general environmental style, and the way the platforming was done, among other things, reminded me of TPL. It basically looks like a game I would enjoy playing for it own sake and not just to see the story (which was the only reason I endured most of Jak II and 3 and which wasn't enough to get me to play Jak X). The more stereotypical villain reminds me of Gol and Maia in his way, too, and I like that. Now if only Jak would stop talking... :D Ah well, at least he quit smoking.

And I forgot to mention that I've wanted to see a Dark Daxter since the concept was introduced in Jak II. It made no sense that he could just ride around and be unaffected. I hope he gets a light side, too, though he may not technically need one, what with being a god of sorts and all that jazz. Dark Dax amuses me to no end and in every way.

I suppose I can understand some of the gripes people have with what we've seen so far, and not everyone's going to love the same things as everyone else, but I'm on your side of the fence - both in that I like it so far, and that it reminds me of TPL. I'm thrilled that we may be getting more information on the workings of eco! In particular, what reminds me of TPL so far, like I commented below somewhere, was that ability where you use the yellow (eco?) vents to shoot up into the air. It reminds me very much of the blue eco launchers in TPL. And I don't know what about the environments and gameplay people say is vastly different from the other games; looks pretty similar so far to me. o.O;

I'm still convinced I'll enjoy this game. :)

Daxter's voice as Dark Daxter scares the bejezuz outta me! XD "Take my dark bolt I vant to eeeat joo little kiddiez! Bwahahahaha! I vill bite joor toes in the middle of the night!"

Hahaha Daxter's dark voice is the stuff of nightmares, man.

And I don't really like how umm... simple this game seems so far. Everything is "just press x" and it's like, well, glad there's not too steep of a learning curve (Ah, this brings back memories of Jak II when I threw my controller across the room many many times) but then again, I don't want to play the whole game only having to press one button. It sort of like a little challenge, ya know?

I like the idea of Keira having another guy after her and this Phoenix guy, as bland of a pirate he is design wise, it gives her some spotlight and I still think Jak deserves to have some competition for his women since he's so oblivious to her at times, especially since ND sort of disregarded her completely in Jak 3. Other than Keira getting her deserved spot light and getting Jak jealous- everything else seems to disappoint me. I'm so sad. T_T

I'm basically going repeat what I just posted in my comment about this on [info]capslock_jak:

I'm still psyched for this game! It's not identical to what we've seen before, but if it was, it'd be boring. I'm glad for the new abilities - that vent-jumping one reminds me of the blue eco launch pads in TPL.

As for Dark Daxter, he'll have to grow on me, but I realized while watching the clip that he talks kind of like Brutter. Which led me to theorize that maybe the Lurkers are just animals from the Jak-verse that have been corrupted by dark eco, and that's what we're seeing happen to Daxter in this unbalanced environment. *will believe this until it's proven otherwise*

So yeah; I'm still on board with this game! ♥
