Jason: It's been almost a year since the album came out. How have things been going both with the album and on the road?

Amy: Awesome. We've been all over the world. We've been to all six inhabited continents since then. We went to Europe, South Africa, South America, Scandinavia, Middle East, all over the place. It's been really great everywhere. It's been cool to tour so many places again and some new places too. The shows have been well received and big and it's been great. Almost like we never left.

Jason: In the US you have done a couple of headline tours in support of The Open Door. Do you plan to do a bigger arena tour after the Family Values tour ends?

Amy: Uh huh. Yeah. This would have been the time for us to do the bigger tour I've been talking about, but then the Family Values thing came up and we thought that it would be cool to do something with a lot of other bands during the summer time. It's festival season. I don't know. More bang for your buck. Besides Korn's amazing and there's a lot of other great bands on the bill. It's better this way because instead of doing two of our own tours right in a row. We can just do this and then have something different at the end of the year.

Korn aren’t the only band in the spotlight on this summer’s Family Values tour: the mostly metal and male-dominated line-up has undergone a gender makeover with the addition of the Amy Lee–fronted Evanescence at the top of the bill. Lee has emerged as a potent presence in the wake of Evanescence’s Grammy-winning 2003 album Fallen (Wind-up), wresting control of the band from guitarist/co-founder Ben Moody and, just this past May, handing guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray their walking papers. But that hasn’t stopped Evanescence from moving five million copies of their latest album, last year’s The Open Door (Wind-up), worldwide. We spoke to the recently married Lee about touring, her marriage, and the state of music today. Here’s some of what she had to say.

Do you remember some of the original inspirations for Evanescence?
When I was growing up and when I was formulating ideas for Evanescence, I was obsessed with the Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo + Juliet — not just the soundtrack though, something about the movie. Back then, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman movies were huge. I would just listen to the scores. At the same time, I loved Soundgarden, Depeche Mode, Björk, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins. There was so much music that, to me, was so good. I guess I still listen to more music from back then.

How Do You Feel About the State of music today?
I think it’s a little confused. I don’t think rock is dead or anything like that; I just think we’re going through a weird period with the Internet. A lot of bands are struggling. Luckily, a lot of new bands that you would never hear are coming through. If you have the time and if you know what you’re doing, you can use the Internet and go to MySpace and search for bands that don’t have record deals. That’s really cool. At the same time, I think labels are pushing signed artists to do things more and more that they wouldn’t want to do — to put out less music and water it down because they’re so afraid of losing money. So I don’t know. I don’t have a ton of bands that are brand new that I absolutely love right now. I love Muse — we’ve been listening to them a ton backstage lately. They’re not that new, but I think they’re incredible.

What kind of music did you have at your wedding?
It was actually just two guys playing guitar and singing. They kind of sang half the time — mostly it was just guitar. It was like from Pink Floyd to Coldplay, really eclectic. My dad’s a musician; he plays a billion different instruments. So he found these guys and I don’t know what he told them. I was scared too because we got married in Arkansas and he got a band that lives there and I was really afraid. But it turned out great.

You’ve made it clear with the changes you’ve made in the band that you’re in charge. Is that DIFFICULT as a woman?
I don’t know it any other way. I don’t feel like I get treated badly or anything. Being a girl, I don’t feel like I can’t be a good leader.But as far as getting respect from the public as a writer, that was the hard part for me. I feel like I’ve gotten it now, but for a long time it was a tough fight. With Ben [Moody], when he was in the band, it was very important to him for some reason to prove to everyone that I wasn’t doing anything — that I was just up there singing and there was some mastermind guy behind the whole thing. So by the time he left the band and we made another record, and it was really good, we sort of proved everything he said wrong. That changed things for us — the proof is in the pudding.

Although it's tougher than ever for new bands to break through nationally, Evanescence has made out just fine, from winning a best new artist Grammy Award to selling more than 6 million copies of the 2003 CD "Fallen," which includes the hits "My Immortal" and "Bring Me to Life."

The success continues with the follow-up album, "The Open Door," which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 last year with the single "Call Me When You're Sober."

Most of us would love to have a hit song written about us. Seether's Shaun Morgan isn't one of those people.

But that didn't stop his ex-girlfriend, Evanescence's Amy Lee, from penning "Call Me When You're Sober," a tune she later admitted was specifically written about her relationship with Morgan (see "Evanescence Set For Fall Tour; Amy Lee Reveals Inspiration Behind 'Sober' "). And the timing couldn't have been worse for Lee's damning revelation, coming just weeks after Morgan checked himself into rehab for treatment of "a combination of substances" (see "Seether Frontman Enters Rehab; August Tour Dates Canceled"). His rehab stint, coincidentally, began on the very same day the Evanescence track was delivered to the nation's rock radio stations.

Happy to hear that they'll continue on their own tour! I've been waiting *grr*

Evanescence front woman Amy Lee hates visiting England, because it brings her out in an allergic reaction. The rocker claims the entire country and its people disagrees with her so much, she ends up bright red and coughing and spluttering as soon as she touches down on English soil.

Lee explains, "My allergies are worse in England than anywhere else in the world! "I remember I was signing autographs and as the kids were coming down the line my face was bright red and I was sneezing all over the autographs. I was just miserable!"

Evanescence is getting to play in countries that it's never visited before on its current tour, with trips scheduled for later this month to Russia and the Middle East, among other places. Singer Amy Lee told Launch she's looking forward to performing for new audiences. "We're going to Israel and Turkey and Russia and Scotland, and we've never been to any of those places," she said. "We actually just hit South Africa and South America and we'd never been to either of those places either, so it's very cool."

EVANESCENCE frontwoman Amy Lee revealed during an interview with NME.COM that the band will film a video for its next single, "Good Enough", later in the month in Budapest, Hungary. Watch the interview with Amy and guitarist Terry Balsamo, conducted at this past weekend's Download festival (which took place June 8-10 at Donington Park, Leicestershire, England) at YouTube.

Apparently, the story is someone (a man from PA) bought the domain(the whois information is also completely different from evanescence.com). It does not belong to Amy or Wind-Up. I don't know why they're linking it to Ev's official site, but a lot of people will buy celebrity name sites so when that particular celebrity wants the domain, they have to buy it from the original purchaser. I'm not saying this is what happened, but it's a possibility.

Anyway, the site is NOT Amy's, so no worries.

The main purpose of this blog is to thank everyone for their amazing support these past few days. And "amazing" is an understatement. We've all been left speechless by the amount of positive responses and support we've received from you, the fans, old and new. And it's causing us to work that much harder to make this new beast we call Machina a successful reality.

I've also been affected by the recent events that have taken place in Evanescence. I was their guitar tech (sometimes bass tech too) since the first tour bus left Will Boyd's house on Feb. 18th, 2003 (yeah, I've been cursed/blessed with a good memory). I've seen nearly every up and down this band has gone through firsthand. All the controversy, milestones, crew members, firings, etc., I could write a book called "My Adventures in Evanescence" and it would be a best-seller and I'd make millions...ok, maybe thousands. But I'm not going to. I'm not going to write a tell-all blog either, or start a live journal about all the fights and triumphs and crazy backstage antics. I never have, and out of respect for John, Rocky, Ben, Will and Tim, I never will (However, if they ever write a book I'll be more than happy to contribute an appendix section).

I'll admit that the recent ill-informed comments by David Hodges almost forced my hand. But my instincts tell me not to, and my instincts are usually right. I respect the fact that Mr. Hodges was a founding member, but he needs to be reminded that success in the music game does not always begin and end with the writing/recording process.

I know alot of you still may be frustrated because no one has come out and told the whole story. But when you have lawsuits and contractual agreements hanging over your head, it's sometimes best to play it as safe as possible. In American courts, whether you're in the right or not, the legal process can be a long, drawn-out (and expensive) experience. So it's best to avoid it if you can. Know that what you've been told so far by John and Rocky is the truth, and they wish they could tell you more. And any fans who may have had their feelings hurt along the way, it was not intentional. Feelings have been hurt by pretty much everyone involved in this situation, and harsh words have been said as a result. It's sort of like a nasty divorce, and anyone who has experienced that knows exactly what I'm talking about.

The best thing that's come out of all of this is you guys. You're incredible. And your support has not been in vain. We've been rehearsing all week, and I might post a video sample of a rehearsal later on. It's hard to get good sound on my tiny camera when it's in a room full of bonecrushing METAL. :-( Anyway, thanks to all of you, especially the new Machina groups...MachinaSpain, Machina Fans UK, and of course Machina Fans Official!"


TBH I don't know what to think anymore with the band. I don't know the whole truth, but between Amy and the guys...the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I still adore Evanescence, and Amy, and despite the drama, will continue to support the band.

"i've got a new ring & now you've got the scoop.

Hey guys. Wow, there is so much to say, I don't know where to start. First of all, and most importantly, I am now officially Mrs. Amy Hartzler! Josh and I are married, and it is the most incredible thing to happen in my life so far (and I've seen some pretty incredible stuff). We just got back from our beautiful, remote honeymoon 2 days ago, and unfortunatley discovered that the fact that I was unable to defend myself for a week was taken advantage of quite a bit. Here's the truth, when I said that John and Rocky both made it clear they were ready to move on, I meant it. They were very vocal about the fact that they didn't really care about evanescence at all, and just stayed around for the money. I knowingly let this negative energy grow within my band for a very long time because I was afraid of the appearance of falling apart, when in reality, trying to hold on to these guys is what was holding us back. I treated both john and rocky with nothing but kindness and respect, and I got nothing but jealousy and resentment in return. They were miserable. They are no longer playing with us because I love this band too much to see it driven into the ground. One little false fact that's been bugging me in the press about this- rocky didn't quit. He never talked to me or our management at all...but he did tell most of the crew and the rest of the band that he planned to quit during the 2 weeks off after our shows in south africa (during which I was getting married and would have no time to replace him). Fortunatley, many of those people care about this project and came and warned me, so we were able to replace him in time to continue the tour as scheduled. I then told John it was time he did what he obviously wants to be doing- playing in his own band. Because no one should be playing in evanescence that doesn't appreciate it- that doesn't love it. And especially not someone that is doing it harm. Being a touring member of a band when what you really want is to be a creator can be frustrating- I guess that frustration got the best of john.
...But that was last week...

So today was the first full rehearsal with Will and Troy and they are awesome. (For those of you who don't know, they are the drummer and guitarist from Dark New Day). I haven't seen Terry so happy playing guitar since before the stroke. They've been working their butts off for the past few days cramming the setlist into their brains and they sound great. Its amazing how good it feels to play now- no clouds over our heads, no conspiracy, no drama, just the love of music. Terry, tim and I are very happy, and seriously can't wait to start touring again. Will and Troy are a little nervous, but they shouldn't be, they both SHRED. Fellow DND fans, don't worry, the bands not breaking up. Were just borrowing Will and Troy for awhile (they are working on their new album now).

Well I hope that's real enough for you. I'm probably going to be repremanded for saying so much, but somebody's got to tell the truth. I'm wiped out. Need sleep! We love you guys, and we won't let you down. See you soon!

Former EVANESCENCE drummer ROCKY GRAY is auctioning off gold and platinum plaques he received as a member of the group just two weeks after singer AMY LEE reportedly sacked him.

Gray plans to part with the valuable accolades by selling them on auction website eBay.
In a statement, he says, "(I'm) just kinda cleanin' house a little bit." Gray and guitarist John LeCompt parted company with the rock group earlier this month (05May07).

On his MySpace.com page, LeCompt claimed he was fired during a frosty cell phone conversation with Lee, while Rocky has revealed he was asked by band management not to discuss the situation.

Continuing the multi-platinum success of their sophomore album, "The Open Door", EVANESCENCE welcomes drummer Will Hunt and guitarist Troy McLawhorn — both from DARK NEW DAY — to the band this week. "I am a big fan of DARK NEW DAY and can't wait for the fans to see what the guys bring to our live show," says frontwoman Amy Lee.

EVANESCENCE will debut their new formation on Saturday, May 19 at Columbus' sold out Rock On the Range festival, along with ZZ TOP, HINDER, VELVET REVOLVER and BUCKCHERRY. Following this performance, EVANESCENCE will perform at WMMR (Philadelphia) on Sunday, May 20 at Camden's Tweeter Center, along with VELVET REVOLVER, BUCKCHERRY and CHEVELLE. The group will then embark on a one-month European tour making stops in Belgium, France and Russia at select festivals and headline dates. Beginning July 20 in St. Louis, Missouri, EVANESCENCE will co-headline the U.S. leg of The Family Values Tour with KORN.

Former Evanescence keyboardist David Hodges has spoken out in defense of singer Amy Lee after fired guitarist John LeCompt made a series of scathing comments about Lee online. According to Blabbermouth, Hodges posted a message at the website of his current band, Trading Yesterday, which read in part, "Life is complicated, no one's perfect; but the only thing I would have done differently than Amy in the last two years is distance myself sooner from the people that have been mentioned...And while I haven't been around for all of it, I know everyone involved along the way enough to know that you should not be pointing your blame at Amy. That's ridiculous. She is a beautiful person and an innovative artist."

Hodges hinted that LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray, who quit Evanescence following LeCompt's dismissal last Friday (May 4th), were "ungrateful," adding, "Amy doesn't owe them anything, and anyone who thinks differently is sorely mistaken."

Hodges played on most of Evanescence's major label debut, Fallen, with founding members Lee and guitarist Ben Moody, but left the group in 2002 before the record was released. Moody exited in late 2003.

LeCompt wrote that he was let go via a cell phone call from Lee, saying, "This call wasn't from a friend who appreciated me but from an enemy who was prepared to hurt me and my family."

Gray wrote that he had been warned by Evanescence management not to discuss the situation publicly.

Lee issued a statement saying that LeCompt and Gray were "ready to move on."

Evanescence is next scheduled to play live at the Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, Ohio on May 19th. The band is also slated to co-headline the Family Values tour with Korn, beginning on July 20th in St. Louis.
