| About: | The tragic and senseless death of Sophie Lancaster on the 28th of August has very quickly become a lightening rod for a change in the public perception of people engaged in alternative lifestyles. Sophie and her partner were attacked in Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Lancashire on the 11th of August. Maltby recovered, but Sophie never regained consciousness, and the decision was made to switch off her life support machine on August 23rd. The Police were reported as saying that the couple had previously been subject to harassment and intimidation from local youths because of their black clothes and piercings. This one incident has brought into sharp focus the unreported everyday harassment, intimidation and attacks on people involved in a whole range of alternative lifestyles; such as transvestism, transgender, gay, bisexuality, fetish/bdsm, Biker, Rocker, Goth, Emo and Cyber/Rivet head etc. All loose terminology for different subcultures, but in essence anyone who sticks out as being different. The Liscard Alternative is a project set up by Siobhan McCarthy, known as SIX and based currently in Wirral. Its aim is to set up a safe environment for all these subcultures: and drop in Alternative Lifestyle Centre for all ages but specifically concentrating on the 14-25 age group in the North West of England for people to: • Come and seek practical and legal advice if they are being subject to verbal or physical attacks from whoever it maybe. • It will be a focal point for meet-ups, general activism, a safe place to shop; films, making and listening to music, art, books and magazines, drama, self defence, sports, concert and night club, and daytrips to anywhere within the Alternative/LGBT remit. • People can even come to simply study and read if they feel unsafe doing this at home, in school or the library for whatever reason. • We are also aiming to provide a counselling service with emphasis on embracing difference, rather than concentrating on a perceived dysfunction. {We have an MSN, an e mail and a myspace for all interested people as well as being there online for members of the Centre.)
