Kawoosh! approved hosting sites

Due to the Kawoosh! video submission regulations and the existing policy to no longer accept videos hosted on temporary/streaming hosting sites, we thought it might be useful to offer a Kawoosh! approved list of free hosting services for both websites and video files.

From now on Kawoosh! will only accept video submissions from either links that appear on this list or from privately hosted/paid service hosted accounts.

Also, if your site has embedded videos for streaming as well as a link to download the file, then that's okay. But videos that are only viewable by streaming will not be listed.

Any new video submitted must adhere to the new approved sites list. All existing videos currently listed on Kawoosh! are fine.

Vidders who currently use streaming/temporary hosting sites are encouraged to think about using the links provided as this will not only ensure that your video will be listed on Kawoosh! but will also enable your vids to be available to a wider audience for a much longer period of time.

I don't see how gigasize is any different than Freewebs. Gigasize is a temporary hosting site, but it keeps it up until it's been inactive for 90 days. (unlimited # of files, 1.5gig limit per file)

Just a thought. I know it's hard to draw the line between what's allowed and not and GigaSize.com is on the wrong side of the line.

I understand what you're saying. The way I see it, Gigasize is a temporary hosting site for files and Freewebs is a website hosting service - you can build a website on Freewebs but not on Gigasize.

Especially with the 'quick upload' feature Gigasize has, I look at Gigasize as nothing but a temporary hosting site. I appreciate the fact that it is similar to Freewebs if you do sign up for a Gigasize account, however I reckon if the 'sign up' step can be skipped people will take that route as it's too much hassle.

With Freewebs, you have to create an account to use it. I believe people who do create an account with Freewebs will then create a website. To me, this is far more permanent as I imagine the user constantly updating and maintaining their website.

With Gigasize, files will disappear after 45 days (I'm assuming without notice if you don't even have to sign up for an account). With Freewebs, if there are no hits on that person's website, or if they do not log in at all for a whole 90 days, I'm assuming Freewebs will e-mail the person prior to this before removing the site and contents.

Bottom line, I see Freewebs as a permanent hosting place compared to sites such as Gigasize. I believe people are more committed if they have a website to look after.

I'm just curious if multiply.com would be ok because while it does stream the videos you upload it also lets people download the videos. And like freewebs you have to create an account to use it and the files as far as I can tell are permanent - I haven't found anything about files being deleted after so long.

The reason why multiply.com isn't on the list is a little different.

It does let people download the videos, but only if you have an account yourself. You have to sign up for a multiply.com account before you can download via a multiply.com link.

In my opinion, this restricts a lot of people from downloading the video - I imagine they just want to watch the video as a one-off thing, they do not want to bother signing up for an account. And because of that, they will resort to viewing the stream version of the video, which is something we discourage.

As a side note, this is the reason why Kawoosh! does not list videos hosted on Yahoo! Groups because you have to be a member of that group to download it.

MediaMax file size limit

FYI: MediaMax FREE has a file size limit of 10 MB which, in my opinion, is unacceptable for a video unless it's intended for a dialup user.

Aah... I see what you mean. It'll let you upload files more than 10Mb however it will only allow you (and others) to download files that are 10Mb or less.

I'll talk it over with [info]the_muppet about whether we'll keep this one listed or not - the fact that users are still able to host files larger than 10Mb but visitors cannot download them is misleading.

Thanks for the heads up :)

Is MediaFire okay if used with an account?
[info]uhsir
2007-05-12 07:57 pm UTC (link)
Per some emails between Gater and me earlier, MediaFire is/was okay. I'm checking to see if it still is.

When MediaMax changed to the 10 MB file size limit I moved my videos to MediaFire. I have an account with them so the files will stay even if they aren't accessed for a time.

If not, I'll look for someplace to move them again. :(

All your existing videos currently listed on Kawoosh! are fine and will stay there, however any new video submitted from now on will have to comply with the new approved hosting list.

While having an account with MediaFire would be fine, we cannot tell whether someone has a registered account or not when they submit their video (unlike FileFront) and with MediaFire's one-click upload 'no sign up' feature, we'd rather discourage the use of this site.

So you do not need to move your existing videos, you can keep them on MediaFire. It's just any new videos you might submit.

P.S.
We've also removed MediaMax from the hosting list - thanks for your intel ;)

2007-05-13 05:11 pm UTC (link)
i use snapdrive (www.snapdrive.net), it's similar to fileden:
you have to log in once a month to keep your files (forever if you'd like)/ direct linking is allowed/ 2GB storage space/ max file size is 100MB/ the bandwidth was huge when i joined, it's smaller now, but still okay with 512MB per day (uhm, let me think, i'm not good at math... that's more than 15GB per month, isn't it?)

i kinda like this site & would like to keep my files there (i hate moving my files around)...
another site is www.eggdisk.com, i don't know the specific numbers, but it's about the same as snapdrive.

Thanks for suggesting these.

We're going to add snapdrive subject to the same conditions as filden, in that people will have to have an account which requires login and therefore makes the hosting/files more permanent.

We'll check out eggdisk when we can get on there, but right now neither of us can get it to load.

Thanks again :)

We didn't list Badango as we feel it comes under the category of a temporary hosting site. You can sign up for an account, but the fact that it has the 'upload now' feature on its front page, made us decide it was more of a temporary site than we wanted to include.

Any vids you have already listed on Kawoosh! that are already hosted on Badongo are of course OK, as stated above.

Thanks for your suggestion :)

Gosh, I was just checking out this thread and realised we never replied to you! I'm so sorry!

We didn't want to add divshare on the list because of the fact that you actually need an account for the file to stay up indefinitely. If not, it will expire in seven days.

And because it had a quick upload tool on its front page, we believed that people would just use it and not bother about signing up for an account.

Having said that, if you do have an account, using divshare shouldn't be a problem. I'll talk it over with [info]the_muppet to see if we can add it to the list and add like we did with FileFront that you must have an account.

And again, I'm so sorry for not replying to this sooner!

according to this article, it could be worth a try:
http://www.pcwelt.de/it-profi/englishnews/Internet/89323/

There is a lot to love with Windows Live Folders, such as public and private folders that let you share just the files you want with anyone you choose on the Internet. There is also some things to loath, such as a 5 file at a time upload limit that makes uploading content to the service a drag. The beta version offers 500MB of free online storage and a 50MB limit in the size of the files you can upload.

though i could not find out, how much download bandwidth, they allow

I checked it out and it looks promising. However because it is in the beta stage, I don't particularly want to encourage people using it just yet.

I tried creating an account and it told me that the service wasn't available in my region yet.

I will keep an eye on it though and see how it develops - thanks for posting this!

Filefront is being a b**ch! and 4shared
[info]starrylizard
2007-09-02 12:23 am UTC (link)
For the last few months, filefront has been deleting files left right and center. I assume they simply need the space. They usually warn you and you can click a tick box to stop the deletion, but some weeks you get these sorts of emails every day and if you happen to not be online too often this would cause issues. It also randomly stops streaming vids without notice.

I'm slowly moving a lot of my files elsewhere so there is a backup.

Also, I've been using 4shared.com a bit and it seems pretty good, though account space is limited.

Hello! And welcome to the vidding world! =D

I'm afraid that even with an account, MediaFire is in our black book of hosting services because of its quick upload feature on the front page that doesn't require registration to use.

We really want to deter people away from using such methods as it creates temporary and unstable links, which is why we won't add MediaFire to the approved list.

I'm sorry if this is a real hassle for you - if you do want to re-upload your vids and need any more help/advice, just yell!

PS
Your Chasing Cars vid's really good! Especially because you're new to the vidding world (my first few vids were diiire). There are so many scenes that shows what Shep thinks about his team, though he'd probably never say it out loud. I also took a peek at your very first vid as I'm a sucker for instrumental vids - all I can say to that is 'wow'. The timing and on-the-beat action (totally loved Atlantis rising from the ocean) was bang on, damn impressive!

Hope you stick around in the vidding scene - stop by the forum if you ever have the chance!

Do you allow MediaMax when the user has a paid account? I got a bit confused with all the posts here, was it a yes or a no?

Also what about a Premium accounts with Megaupload? Do you allow vids to be downloaded from there?

I hate MM most of the time as it goes down so often, but I have oodles of storage space and dl_mbs...

As for Premium I have an account until March 2009 at the moment :)

Let me know as I am interested in putting my vids on Kawoosh! having really only posted links to them previously in a couple of comms.

Thanks.

We decided it was a no to MediaMax due to the fact that although people could upload large files, they could only download a max of 10mb.

As for MegaUpload, even with an accountit isn't on our approved list of hosting services because of its quick upload feature on the front page that doesn't require registration to use.

We really want to deter people away from using these sites as it creates temporary and unstable links, and we want Kawoosh! to be as up-to-date as possible with links available all the time.

If you're wanting to list your vids on Kawoosh! I'm more than happy to help you out with any of the other options we have listed on the approved hosting list above - just let me know =)

Another place you might like to share your vids is our Kawoosh! Vidmakers Forum - lots of advice and tips and tutorials, and any vids posted on here (provided they use approved hosting links) are automatically added to Kawoosh!, which means you wouldn't have to fill out a submission form for them.

Just give me a shout if you need any more help =)

Under the Kawoosh! policy we no longer accept videos hosted on temporary/streaming hosting sites... RapidShare's got a 'quick upload' on the front page and the fact they describe it as a "free temporary service" means that it won't be included in the approved hosting list.

Kawoosh! will only accept video submissions from either links that appear on this list above or from privately hosted/paid service hosted accounts, so if you'd like some help choosing or using one of the above free approved sites, I'd be more than happy to help you - it's quite straightforward to set up a simple webpage using these upload sites =)

Fileden definitely requires a monthly login. All of my files are gone from there. I'll get around to uploading them again, eventually.

Because of that I decided to check out your other suggestions. I made an account at FreeWebTown and it looks pretty good. I have some info for you about file limits.

When I used the Java Multi File Uploader, they finally gave out the details.
"Select up to 50 files for upload.
The total file size should be smaller then 750 MB.
Maximum size for each single file should be smaller that 40 MB."

Have you checked out ADrive.com? I'm hopeless at knowing whether these places are any good or not, but I've signed up for the free account. Seems you do have to register, which I think is one of the requirements you like to have. Good thing is the free account gives you 50GB storage and files can be shared. It's supposed to transfer files from other storage places, not sure if that works. File size upload is great at 2GB and supports multiple uploads.

I had a problem when I tried my first upload as it seemed to stop everything else working as far as the browser was concerned - however that might just have been me and even if that's true I can upload when I'm away from the computer.

You've probably looked at this place already, but just thought I'd drop you a line incase it hadn't. :))

Justa note about freewebtown:
They decided to get wonky and I can't figure out what they mean. On the home page:
New Rules:
You have to have to have website with links for downloads, otherwise direct downloads will not be permitted - too many viruses are getting distributed that way.

Yes, I believe that direct downloads will not work if the link is on a non-freewebtown webpage.
