I'm new to LJ. I joined because I knew it was a great way to stay in touch with friends, but also because I hoped to find a community who shared my like interests, a.k.a. Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
The Beach Boys were a huge presence in my childhood. Every year my sisters and I would dance to the Beach Boys' Christmas Album while decorating the x-mas tree. In the summer, it was typical to hear the sound of my whole family singing Little Honda coming from our Volkswagen Camper. I always liked the Beach Boys, but I didn't appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson until recently.
There are a few specific events that were vital in the culmination of my love...
1. In 1999 I moved out my parents home and into a teeny apartment in San Francisco. I procured a job working at a very cool video store and often after it closed, a coworker and I would blast Wouldn't It Be Nice, and dance around the shop, shelving videos, singing every lyric at the top of our lungs.
2. It the summer of 2003 I was on a camping trip with my Dad and future husband. We had only brought four cds to listen to on a very long drive. Towards the end of the trip we had listened to Pet Sounds in mono and stereo about 15 times each. I found myself really hearing the music for the first time. I was amazed by the lyrics, compositions and use of atypical instruments. I decided then and there, that God Only Knows was the most beautiful love song I had and would ever hear.
3. One average day in 2004, I was cleaning up and found myself very tired of my same old tunes... Depeche Mode, Jets to Brazil, The Cure, et cetera... so I decided to try out a copy of a cd my dad had given me, Sunflower/Surf's Up. I suddenly found myself sitting on my bed, just listening, unable to move or do anything else but listen. I was astounded.
4. One wonderful day in January of 2008, I heard Brian Wilson's SMiLE for the first time.
For the past 6 months I have absorbed as much music and information on and about the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson as one human can. I am completely in awe of Brian Wilson's genius. I don't think there will ever be anyone as musically gifted as Brian Wilson to grace this earth again.
What more can I say?
