So just for kicks today (nothing new in my own inbox), I went and checked our BUG email... +90 (most fp notifications though). Wow, so how's that for (nearly) a year's worth of inactivity?

| NanoWrimo Starts In About A Week. |
[22 Oct 2006|04:30am] |
Who all is planning to participate?
I'm planning on drafting a couple of short stories for submission to various magazines and/or contests that are coming up at the end of this year. Probably won't complete 50k total, but that's not precisely my goal.
Has anyone participated in Nano in past years? Would love to hear others' success/failure/frustration stories. I did it last year and completed a 50k novella, and a very rough draft at that. :) It was more of a way for me to talk to some characters and get their history out in the open for background information than anything else, but it was fun and it led me into the development of some directions I don't think I would have otherwise considered. All's well that ends well.

| Contest entries and a C2 community |
[21 Oct 2006|04:19pm] |
We are not dead! With great pleasure I announce the posting of our contest entries and the creation of a C2 community to give those entries higher exposure. You can find the C2 community here. I've added all the mods as staff, which gives them posting access and suchly. The entries are all posted on the ficpress page as well as being archived in the C2 community. We received one entry for the genre contest, It Meant Nothing, which wins by default. Hooray! But there are seven dialogue entries, from which we require a winner. Once we have both of our winners, we'll give them a seperate post where they will be showered in kudos and bragging rights and general cool. Dialogue Contest
The challenge was to write a short story entirely in dialogue - no tags, no description, just speech. These are the entries: Conversation Dead Days Digital Dialogue It's Only a Little Fire Slime Volleyball Stakeout Two Men & Too Much Alcohol
Please don't hesitate to review them over on ficpress if you have any concrit to share with the writers. Authors: 1) Check the reviews, 2) If I got the genre wrong or you don't like the summary, get in touch via the BUG email or by posting an anonymous comment here and I'll gladly make changes. Yes, authors are anonymous until the winners are announced to eliminate any chance of bias. Once you've read the stories and decided which one should win, please vote on the poll in the post above.
Other Stuff
I believe there are still pending applicants. We'll try to deal with them soon.
We are open to suggestions for a future contest.
Any queries/questions/concerns/etc about BUG: drop a comment here or email us.

So I know I just posted a 'WE'RE PRETTY MUCH DEAD' post, but word on the street is that fp.net was shut down for several days... but is now back on track apparently bigger and better than ever (soon when it's finished I guess) with tons of new options.
Like, C2s, which to my understanding are something like groups... something that's almost perfect for the bug. Among other things. So you guys check it out, and let me know what you think so I can get on that pronto. For you other mods especially- group effort!
Mmm, I'm actually a little excited?

| BUGmod Announcement on Contests and other Business. |
[19 Jun 2006|06:54pm] |
We the Mods have made a few decisions concerning the two contests we have up at the moment, to wit the Genre Challence and the Dialogue Challenge.
The Decisionz:
1. Both of the deadlines have been extended to August 1st, 2006.
2. All entries will be submitted anonymously to the Breakfast Underground FictionPress page. This was suggested to us by a -fittingly- anonymous response on the LJ, and we the Mods have taken to the concept. It basically means your work will get read by people without any prejudice that might come with your name on FP. This means we will be asking submitting authors to not post their entries on their own FP page until AFTER the contest.
So there you have it, the deadlines have been extended and you're to be freed of prejudice. Are we not fantastically awesome!? Hop to it, write us some gems.
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
In other news, we've done a try-out archiving for the first contest. Wasn't too difficult since there were only three entries with about three reviews each... go check it out here: First contest archive. And let us know what you think could be different. We wish we had the monopoly on good brains but we'll admit we can't come up with it all ourselves.

| CONTEST: DIALOGUE CHALLENGE! |
[29 May 2006|12:36am] |
Contest Number the Second:
Dialogue Challenge
Theme:
Again, as suggested by Calybe to whom we ModBUGs are so very grateful, your challenge here is to write an entire short story in dialogue. No narrative, no description, no 'he said/she said' - everything has to be conveyed in the way that your characters talk. Even though you are probably only going to have two characters (kudos to anyone who successfully manages more), it must still be always clear who is speaking throughout the entire piece.
I don't think I stated this in the genre contest details so I shall make it clear here: For both contests, the title is completely up to you. The plot can be whatever you wish, provided that it complies with the rules of each contest.
For this, the dialogue contest, there is no genre restriction.
Length: The upper word limit has been placed at 2,000 words but anything below that is perfectly fine.
Who: All members and also anyone from outside the community. Any stories submitted by non-members will be published (privately) on the LJ community to be pre-read. If we *especially* like your work, we might ask you to become a member.
How: You write it. Send it in an acceptable format (*.doc, *.html, etc.) to our email address and don't forget to tell us what your FP author name is. Please feel free to publish it on your own FP page in the meantime, but do mention clearly in the summary and in your story (f.i. "B.U.G. contest: bla-di-bla") that this is a submission for our contest. Also, you have to be aware that it will be published on our page.
Where: It gets published on the fictionpress profile, as a story 'by' B.U.G. Obviously, your name will be at the top, because people have to know who they're voting for. During the contest each story will be published separately. When the contest ends, they will all be grouped together as one story (each story becoming one chapter), the winning one up front. All reviews you received while your story was separate will be copy-pasted into the final collection.
When: Contest deadline is July 1st.
If you have any more questions or queries, please don't hesitate to ask!
Note: This contest is completely independent of the first one. You are encouraged to enter both if you have time, but we ask that they be done seperately - ie: two seperate works.

| CONTEST: GENRE CHALLENGE! |
[28 May 2006|11:45pm] |
|
*Sounds klaxon* Attention, all ye BUGs! There be a new contest.
Genre Challenge
Theme:
As suggested by the wonderful Calybe, this challenge is to write a short story in a genre in which you wouldn't normally dabble.
Are you a romance writer? Try some fantasy, science-fiction, horror or crime. Are you a fantasy writer? Try some crime, horror or romance. Are you a science-fiction writer? Try some romance, crime or horror. Are you a crime writer? Try some romance, fantasy, science-fiction or horror. Are you an angst writer? Then your challenge is to write something happy, perhaps a fairy tale, in any genre of your choice. (And yes, Roxy, it is possible to have happy scifi. *sticks out tongue*)
If I have missed out anyone's preferred genre, many apologies, but I'm sure that the challenge is clear enough: write beyond your usual genre. Also, don't necessarily feel restricted to just the genres listed as suggestions - anything goes!
However, because forcing you to write completely out of your own territory might be too large a step to make in one go, you are allowed to use your own preferred genre as well. But it must be as a secondary feature. For example, a romance writer could write a crime-romance, but the crime would have to be at the foreground and the romance only a subplot.
Length: The upper word limit has been placed at 5,000 words but anything below that is perfectly fine.

All reviews you received while your story was separate will be copy-pasted into the final collection.
When: Contest deadline is July 1st.
If you have any more questions or queries, please don't hesitate to ask! Hopefully, we'll have a greater turnout this time. *nudges*
Note: This contest is completely independent of the second one. You are encouraged to enter both if you have time, but we ask that they be done seperately - ie: two seperate works.

| Ye Greate and Many-splendoured Firste Theme Contest. |
[05 Apr 2006|05:10pm] |
Edit 15-06:
Three entries were sent in for the April Fools' contest (info below) and in accordance with the prophecy, I mean with BUG's tentative contest scheme, I give you here the links, summaries and reviews of these stories.
Safe Keeping by Acquiescence. Summary: "... rainwater splashes into the space where her lover's heart should be, but her fingers are too busy gripping his, and he really doesn't care."
April Fools, Idiot by ice bitten. Summary: He was going to get her, he snickers and he reaches in for her insides while she sleeps. APRIL FOOLS, YOU BITC-
April's Fool by King Patch. Summary: A morning in the life of a girl called Cash.
Reviews on BUGpage for Acquiescence:
Ad Hector: i've actually been torn between this and "April's Fool." but this one made the hairs on my nape stand. i have got to choose this.
King Patch: Babe! I loved this.. it was dark like a surreal film noir. It was a scary world to get into. I like that you don't try to explain what the situation is and just leave the reader to come up with an explanation themself. The ending felt a bit abrupt but that can be a total plus, in this story. Great show~
Alankria:They're dead, right? I hope I interpreted that correctly. Even so, complexity is always a good thing; had I had time to write anything for the competition, I too would have tried to go outside the box. So kudos for writing something that really made me think about what's going. It's also well written (I think I saw one typo: "It splatters on her forehead and dips into her eye." -- I think that should be 'drips'), which is a definite plus. This one gets my vote as the best of the submissions.
Reviews on BUGpage for ice bitten:
iluvsweep: hahahaah! my god i got SO fooled with this one!! i seriously thought he'd cut her open or something! especially after reading 'safe keeping' which was kinda freaky...and i didn't quite understand it, but i got the really morbid feeling they were dead in that one, so i thought it might be really weird, haha not that it wasn't, but it was actually really funny! love the end, 'Ben grins and places the bag of insides on the counter. "harsh...can i eat them?"' i was like WTF?!?!??! hahah thought he was a weirdo cannibal or some demented thing!! then it was suddenly, you took all the marshmallows, hahaha i didn't realise how fast my heart was beating till i read that! then it was just whooshh, completely fooled i was, i'm not sure if i'm allowed to vote seeing as i'm not an author let alone a member of BUG! i just love reading stories hehe, but yeah, this was ACE! hope you keep writing!
I-Have-Serious-Issues:Wow, excellent job with the twist at the end. It made me smile. The writing, I'll admit was a bit vague, but I guess in this story it had to be, to work out. A few more details here and there would've made it stand out more. Still, though, the idea was very orignal (at least I believe so, as I've never read anything like it before, but hell, you never know). Again, nice job.
King Patch: I was so grossed out reading this, it was absolutely brilliant. I loved the corny ending. Because the 'horror' is so exaggerated it seems pretty bad at first, and the the conclusion is just so silly it all works really well. I enjoyed reading it! I was definitely fooled. Thanks very much for participating!
Alankria: would have preferred if it he had actually taken out her organs. Would have been more interesting. But maybe I'm the really morbid one. This piece... well, I just didn't like it all that much. I didn't like the style. I think the tense messed up a few times, there is no real substance to the sentences (can't bring myself to call them paragraphs because, well, they're not) and the swearing is un-necessary. It really is. And the ending is kind of anti-climatic really. This one comes last, in my opinion.
Reviews for King Patch:
skywriter-x (anon.): whoa. awesomeness. seriously, good stuff. there was such an innocent, almost childish voice to the main character, and then, bam, you find out he's married. good job though!JB
sketchingaCYNiC: I liked this; it was very interesting and kept me reading, even though I'm not familiar with your already-established characters. I don't know how it's got to do with April Fool's, but as you said you only needed a reference to it... Anyway, very well-written and ... unusual name for a girl. Cash. Hm. ^_^ (I'm rambling now.)
Alankria: Though the piece itself is an interesting delve into a character (and it comes as no surprise to see the author's note at the end, saying Cash is a character from an already developed story), I don't see how it's an April Fool. I honestly don't. But other than that, I did like this; it's well written and impressed me despite being in first person, which usually turns me off. Because I don't understand how it's an April Fools, this gets my vote for second place in the contest. (Is there a second or third place, or just a winner? Well, I'm going to vote for this as second because it is definitely far better than the other one, but it lacks something that 'Safe Keeping' had.)
