i was playing this song 'kuluvalile' from Muthu a little while ago and my friend yumi, she is japanese was going gaga abt it, ooo love this song, i lovee this movie etc.

there is this song from malayalam movie thanmathra. it actually is a classic poem by bharathiyar.

it starts katru veliyidai kannamma. there have been many versions of the songs in tamil movies and theater.

Greetings.
I'm not Tamil but I have a huge interest in the language, culture and history (especially medieval.) I'm wondering if anyone here might be in the Los Angeles, CA area and know of a place/person from whom I could learn Tamil.
I'd also love to meet people from (or with knowledge of) Tiruchendur and Tirunelveli, as I've mostly been studying the history of those area and it would be neat to have an insiders view. I've never been to India but really hope to go someday.

Margazhi-a season of reassurance

It's that time of the year again, the time when people from all walks of life finally get the zest to wade through water logged roads, women leave their idli batter in the dark, middle aged house wives abandon their teary soap operas to rush to the various halls to get front seats and more importantly hot besh-besh beverages from the cafeteria.

However much people complain that rock concerts are invading namma-Madras, all is reassured during Margazhi, when jasmine heads and pattu podavais are sighted at the various sabhas. All thoughts of the Ganguly-inclusion issue, the flooded roads, and the forthcoming elections are forgotten when one hears the rendering of the Kalyani Raagam over a hot cup of coffee.

However I would imagine that the rasikas would appreciate if the singers laid off the Amritha Varshini Raagam for awhile.

I know the age old saying goes, "Athai madi meethai adi", but for now, my athai has her madi full with two adorable grandchildren, so, I'll just stick to my patti! comments are appreciated!

Her cotton saree felt like silk, as I sank deeper into her lap. I glance up at her face, trying to memorise the way the lines on her forehead form three near perfect lines, something that I had not yet been able to achieve in my geometry homework. I love the way her scarlet bindi, (which was so fiercely red that it would’ve made Santa proud!), lights up her whole face. I watch her face screw up in frustration when I tell her about how partial my math teacher is to a boy I hate. I feel the beautiful bond that binds us, when she softly strokes my hair, I feel infinite wisdom, and inexplicable knowledge and love pass onto me as she gently strokes my hair, muttering on how unmanageable my hair is.
This is my special place, a place where I can be myself without worrying about what the girls on the other side of the sand box think about my clothes, a place where I can rant as much as I want, complain about everything under the sun, tell her about my new book, and listen to tales that would go on to inspire me and lead me through the good, bad and ugly that awaited me tomorrow.
Patti smells like lilies, flavoured yogurt and ripe mangoes, when I snuggle up close to her I can practically taste mangoes and yogurt! I look intently at her long fingers, the fingers responsible for creating the magic, that mankind knows as cooking.
As I sink my head further into her lap, I marvel at her oratorical abilities, her ability to make words dance into pictures in front of your eyes, her amazing gift to use different voices for the different characters, her clever use of words, that extended beyond the boundaries of it’s meaning, that transports me into a different lexical world. But I also trace the sadness in her voice, perhaps a little guilt at not being able to become a lawyer. But nevertheless, her voice regains the pace and the strength that encourages me to achieve the wildest of my dreams.
She tilts her head sometimes, as if asking me to seek a different way, she shakes her head, ever slowly as if asking me to reconsider what I just said, but never do the words “ I told you so!” escapes her dainty lips. Sometimes, she gently pushes me off her lap, maybe to make thatha a cup of coffee, or perhaps to whip up my favourite dish. A dish seasoned with love.

Hello all--

It's been a long time, and I undeleted my livejournal just for the purpose of making a post in here. Recently, a group under the direction of musicdirector/softwareengineer Srikanth Devarajan (based in Maryland, USA) released a CD entitled 'H1Bees'. This album covers the journey of an Indian seeking an H1 visa to come to the United States .. a tribute to the immigrant experience, but with a fusion twist! The songs are in Tamil, Hindi, English and a bit of Telugu. Featured on tamiloviam.com, H1Bees has also been featured in the American newspaper, Washington Post. I hope you all check it out sometime soon!
