Anyone still out there? [06 Nov 2007|09:57pm]

I just thought I'd give yall a prod. It'd be a shame to let this forum die off since the KO is over.

I don't know if any of you are along the TX coast, but if you are, here's a sock swap taking place for those living in the coastal regions of the US--The Hurricane Sock Party.

Swap sign-ups end tomorrow night according to the swap planner--
Hurricane Sock Swap Blog for more info.

Texas Knits Cloth [06 Jun 2006|08:12pm]

I know this comm was created for us Texan knitters who were participating in the Knitting Olympics, but that's no reason why we can't continue to share interesting tidbits with each other. I found this looking around for patterns for squares to knit for [info]stitchmysquare-- Knitted Texas Cloth.

Sorry to those who have seen it before! :)

Intro [06 May 2006|12:54am]

ab_xnfp
Hi there, I've been looking for more texan knitters to jabber with. I've got a challenge project on my hands (literally) I've got six weeks before a friend of mine moves away to new jersey and I want to make her a felted bag (sort of like a wallet). Thing is I've also got to get my house clean for company within the month AND i've got a toddler who likes to grab my needles, yank yarn and yarn wrestle in general. The wool is on the rough side and I've not used much wool and never anything rough. The swatches look great though so I'm going with it.

wish me luck and stamina.

Not quite a gold-medal effort [27 Feb 2006|11:29am]

Well, I did not meet my Knitting Olympics goal. (Though given how much potential knitting time I lost working on other projects, or sleeping, or playing around with MP3s after two months of ignoring my playlist... Well, I think if I'd been a little more single-minded about it I could have done it. But, real life intervened -- as did my usual indifference to externally-imposed deadlines.)

Okay, I just have to 'fess up ... I haven't done anything else on my KO project.  Real life -- travel, unexpected family things, and being really sick -- kind of got in the way.

BUT -- congratulations to all of you who are making it or who are almost there!  I'm in awe of you and your manic fingers.  May your wrists recover soon.  :-)

Done in right at 2 weeks, the Fir Cone Square Shawl is finished! Again, the yarn is about 4 ounces of 1/14 cashmere from ColourMartUK in "Everglades" . The cost of the yarn was about $15 - not much more than Zephyr!

I'll have a full post on [info]knitting in a day or two with more details and pictures - most will be repeats of what I've already posted here. Wanted y'all to see it first though!

Thoroughly uncompetitive [20 Feb 2006|10:55pm]

I wouldn't say I'm admitting defeat, per se, but even with my revised goal, I do not expect to earn a Knitting Olympics gold medal this go-round. Hampered by a slow start and continued interruptions, I now realize I was underprepared altogether. This doesn't bother me as much as it might have a week ago, as I now have a (non-Olympic) FO

behind the cut )

to show for my time. Considering that it only cost $5 in materials (a skein and a half of Light & Lofty, by the way) and a lot of fun, and that it sold at a silent auction on Friday, that's more than enough for me.

On the Olympic-project score, I have not progressed any further. I may now decide to start over fresh and not have any funky accidental increase-decrease stuff going on; that seems reasonable.

To those still in the running: Onward!

Celtic and cabling ... [15 Feb 2006|12:18am]

Day ... I forget! Is it 3 or 4?

I did get a lot done on the planes to California, but I've stalled out in the last 24 hours.  Workshops and business dinners don't lend themselves to knitting time, and my colleagues kind of look at me funny when I say I'd rather sit and knit in my hotel room instead of going out with them.  I personally think that's why room service was invented, but apparently I'm wrong!

I love this cabling pattern, and I'm going to keep at it even though I know I won't finish this by the end of the Knitting Games.  I just feel so impressed with knitting when I watch this intricate pattern forming from the stitches that I make.  It's a great conversation starter, too ... on one of my flights yesterday, my seatmate was a novice crocheter who was making a scarf.  We decided no one else could sit with us unless they had a yarn project to work on!  Fortunately the flights wasn't full, so we didn't have to test that theory with the flight attendants ...

I am doing my very best for Texas and for Team Knittyboard... my challenge is the Fir Cone Square Shawl from Folk Shawls.
The yarn of choice is some 1/14 cashmere from ColourMartUK on ebay - it's single ply and oiled for machine knitting. Definitely a *different* knitting experience - but the swatch I did when I first bought it a few months back washed up so soft, I know it'll come out great.

Hi, just joined the community today, and I'm doing a double-header for the Olympics (which is appropriate since I'm also in Team Wales): A replacement for this shoulder bag, correcting the mistakes of the original design (and also I think making use of a Fair Isle design of two dragons facing a peace sign that I worked up for that first bag but wound up not using), and a hat for my sister's birthday gift to match the scarf I made her for Xmas. Got the yarn ready and waiting, just need to get started. (Oh, and maybe pick out some cabling for the body of the bag, since I'm only doing the Fair Isle around the top just under the drawstring. And buy two or three zippers for the pockets.)

Help help! (slightly edited) [09 Feb 2006|01:28pm]

txplumwineknits
I cross posted this to [info]knit_olympics earlier and got a lot of help, but I'm still *ahem* casting about for options...

Less than 36 hours to go and I *still* don't have my yarn! I desperately need help. I am looking for a yarn with the following qualities:

- Fingering or lace weight (no fewer than 7 stitches per inch [or 4cm])
- No wool, angora, alpaca, or other 4-legged animal fibers (this is due to rash-causing allergies; silk/blends are OK)
- 2,000 yards (and it's the yardage, not the weight, I'm most concerned with) will cost $75 or less
- Pretty easy to access in an LYS or online (i.e. "in stock," not special order)
- Available in black

All help is appreciated! Current best options include Silk City Bounce (Elann.com ships fast!) and a couple of linens at my LYS.

What's your project? [08 Feb 2006|06:58am]

Yay, more Texas knitters!

So what's your project?  What's the challenge for you?  Do you think you'll finish?

I'm making this Celtic Knot Afghan for a friend's baby, only without the fringe on the ends.  I have no idea what the yarn is that I'm using; I inherited it from a friend.  I'm pretty sure that it's a Lion Brand Pound of Love in Denim, which is surprisingly soft.  Those tend to hold up well for babies, too, so it should be good.

I'm thinking about modifying the pattern so I knit all three panels at once, but I haven't made up my mind.  I might just have to modify to two panels (depending on width) so that's more appropriate for a baby-size blanket... I haven't done much with cables, so that's the challenge for me.  Well, that and finishing a baby afghan in 16 days!  I'm hoping I'll finish, but I've managed to get booked on a business trip to California and a personal trip to Finland right in the middle of the games!  This is seriously going to cut into my knitting and ice hockey-watching time!  I wound the yarn into smaller balls that could travel, but those afghan pieces ... I just don't know.
