 | 06:09 pm - Queen Elizabeth Solves British Tennis Draught (Humor)
The Queen invited 6-time Wimbledon Champ Roger Federer to a hastily-organized press conference. She wasted no time in getting to her speech. Queen Elizabeth II: Dear Members of Royalty, Beloved British paparazzi and of course the general public. I have heard your cries of desperation seeking a British champion for my entire time as your Queen. For over fifty years, I have heard your collective sighs with your hands to the British clouds asking why. I have watched Tim Henman fail in his quest for a Wimbledon title and now Andy Murray, a Scot, has also failed to bring home the crown. I endeavored to give Mr. Murray added incentives to make at least the finals. I offered to be present at Wimbledon at the Royal box, let him frolic in Harry's old bedroom, as well as taking a ride in the Royal helicopter. Alas, these things were not enough for Mr. Murray to make the final. If Mr. Murray spent less energy on growling like a lion and pumping himself up, he simply would have had more reserve to beat the American. I have heard my people's despair and I thank Mr. Roger Federer for appearing with me before you all today. Today, the British drought of winning Wimbledon has ended. Mr. Federer, I have for you an honorary British birth certificate. It states here that you were born August 8th, 1981 in the town of Manchester. Since you are a footballer fan, you can appreciate why I chose that city. As well as the honorary birth certificate, I also have your British passport. We took your photo from the tour and super-imposed on our passport depicting the glorious emblems and insignia of the British state. The implications of this move are immediate. Andy Murray is now the British No. 2 and Mr. Federer will now occupy the number one spot. We are also prepared to accept Switzerland into the British Commonwealth. This will allow Mr. Federer to compete in the Commonwealth Games if he so chooses. To the British media, you have been given renewed credibility.Try not to botch it up like you did in the past seventy years. To the British public, your prayers have now been answered and your lamenting days are over. Now get back to work so we can actually do something productive for a change. The Queen exits quickly leaving Roger Federer simply astounded holding his new British documents.

 | 10:25 am - brit watch - we've won something!!! did you read the title? it's true! we actually won something - and yes it was a tennis tournamount!!
I hope you were sitting down when you read that, because if you weren't you've probably colapsed due to shock....but wait, there's more to it..
Anna Smith, the british no 13 (lucky for some) won the Felixstowe title (that massive competition, full of the worlds best) to record her third tournament victory! she's won 3? were they all tennis realated?...
Looking a little deeper we discover how impressive and world ranking shattering this win is. the top seed was our very own Naomi Broady at no 364, and Anna herself was seeded 2 (ranked 394). What a world class line up that is! In fact, five of the eight seeds were british, showing just how poor a lineup there was.
But at least a brit won the ladies, in the mens we couldn't manage a single seed even though the number 1 was world renowned Martin Fischer (what do you mean you've never heard of him?) at 222 in the world, which stretched to the number 8 seed A Sadecky at 583!! If you think that's impressively bad, take into acount that 20 of the 32 entrents were british and not one of them made the last eight shows how terrible we are.

 | 01:42 pm - Well, he did it
I wasn't originally rooting for Andy but I was really impressed with much he gave it his all. Towards the end I was sort of wanting him to win but Roger losing again would've been devastating more so than Andy losing
And also: hot damn! they had commercials & congratulatory messages pre-recorded and everything! Good thing he won then. Congrats, Rog!

 | 12:11 pm - As the close of Wimbledon draws near... I have no doubt that I'm probably in the minority, but I really want Andy Roddick to win tomorrow, and I think he has a legitimate chance. I have no doubt that Fed wil become the new all-time record holder for male Grand Slam winners. I just don't want it to happen tomorrow.
The women's final didn't surprise me; one set of fantastic tennis, and one set of not-so-fantastic tennis. I won't say the results here in case you haven't seen the match, yet.
Any thoughts?

 | 02:00 am - brit watch to watch the brits I suggest everyone runs to the carpark, you might just catch them leaving to drown their sorrows....
no one left, so no more brit watch untill the next tournamount.
in other news, I was completely wrong about roddick, and I will happilly admit the better player won. I genuinely didn't believe he had it in him to perform like that, it was pure class. murray may have got his tactics wrong, but nothing can be taken away from the deserved victory for andy roddick.
finally for wimbledon, we have to end with mr bogdanovic, who I'll remind you just 2 weeks ago said he was eady both physically and mentally to break into the top 100. this same man, who clearly has his sights set on big things, got told that he will never be given a wild card to wimbledon again. his response?..."that's okay, I was going to concentrate on doubles anyway". yes alex, of course you were. it has nothing to do with the fact you may have to actually earn your place next year does it?
he is s**t, and we all know he is, even he does! Current Mood: embarrassed

 | 04:40 pm - brit watch not much to say for the seniors since they are all useless except the sulky scot, and he's already in the final thanks to playing andy roddick in the semi's. lets be honest here, if you can return roddick's serves (which murray will) then he's about as scary as playing your average brit - and we know how brilliant we are!
Elana Baltacha lost in the second round, no shock there, but has suggested that there are in fact 16 winners of wimbledon in the mens, and another 16 in the womens. this was made clear by her post match interview in which she said : "a lot of people get obsessed with this one week of the year...." "...wimbledon is very special and it's great to do well here but it's just one week of the year for us..." "....I don't think we should be judged purely on this week. British tennis is not in a sorry state at all".
since wimbledon only lasts one week, what is going on right now at wimbledon? obviously this just shows just how much of a sorry state our tennis is in that the players don't even consider wimbledon to be a two week event. what in all honesty does this say about the ambition of these players? even more worrying is the fact one player apart from murray made it to the second round and yet she thinks british tennis is not in a sorry state. well you fooled me, look out world, clearly we're going for the davis and fed cups instead!
( brits in juniors and doubles )
with all this in mind, the only thing left for us brits is to cheer on andy murray when he plays federer on sunday. I want him to win, but sadly I think he'll lose in 4 sets..... come on tim!!

 | 08:15 pm - brit watch + bogo explains it all! finally a proper icon for british tennis (if it's been designed by someone here then please tell me and I'll do the crediting).
Well done Elena Baltacha for giving us 2 sort of brits to cheer on tomorrow, sort of since she's actually from the ukraine - we even have to steal average players from other countries to improve our success we're so bad!
for the doubles results I have at hand 3 out of 5 of our representatives lost, including anne keothavong. but the biggest shock, and you better make sure you're sitting down for this, one of the doubles pairings to win included alex bogdanovic! his partner james ward must've played an absolutely storming match!
( bogdanovic and the daily mail explain why we have such poor rankings )
oh and one final thing for those to have wondered, bogo is not yet officially the worst player in wimbledon history. that little record goes to an irish chap by the name of Joe Hackett who lost 9 consecutive matches in the 1950's. expect to hear his name a lot in a years time when bogo inevitably equals it. | 05:38 pm - Best of five-set games for women at Slams? From ESPN.com:
Making women play best-of-five-set matches at the Grand Slams would be a waste of time because they are not fit enough to last the distance, former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt said Tuesday."I don't think a lot of them would last five sets," said the Australian after setting up a second-round date with fifth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro. "The training you have to do to last five sets, especially seven best-of-five-set matches, it's a lot more than three-set matches. There would obviously be question marks [over whether] a lot of them could last that much," he said. After years of resisting calls to award women equal prize money, with All England Club officials believing men provided more value to the fans, Wimbledon introduced parity in 2007. But since then there have been murmurings from media and some of the fans that women are making easy money.
OK, so outside of Lleyton's complete lack of tact on the subject, I was recently wondering why the Slams are not best-of-five-set matches for women as well as men. To me this makes the Slams less of an athletic achievement for women than it is for the men. It is still steeped with prestige and tradition and honor and all that good jazz, but when it comes down to the training and the physical demands of the athletes, the Slams are just like any other tournament for women (if maybe longer in some cases). I have no doubt that the mental pressure is much more at a Slam, no matter what your gender, but I think the best-of-five format on the men's side makes winning a Slam that much more of an achievement, at least in terms of physical triumphs.
However, I totally don't agree with Lleyton... I think, if given the chance, the women would rise to the challenge and do just as well as the men in best-of-five matches. It would most certainly take a change in the training regime of female tennis players, but I certainly do not think it impossible.
So, what do y'all think? Should there be a push for equality in the format of play at Slams? Do you think that such a push could ever be successful?

 | 02:45 pm - Wimbledon iPhone app For those of you with an iPhone/iPod touch, you might be interested in this official Wimbledon scores/news app.
It has a good live scores feed of all the matches and it updates every 30 seconds. The 'completed matches' section doesn't seem to be right up to date but I'm guessing that's because Wimbledon only started like 2 hours ago. There's also a big tree showing the draw.
