"ex-panic member, Brent Wilson will be interviewed by "Alternative Press Magazine" today for the upcoming issue, so keep an eye out for it as it will be superimposed with the interview of the current members. Brent won the law suit against his former mates, has begun school and recently bought a new guitar to summon his creative wits. It looks like what goes around comes around. Thanks to all of you who have been keeping up with all of the hullabaloo.

Blake Wilson"
Many rumors have gone around from Brent’s departure from the band. What is the real story behind it? Did he leave or was he kicked out? Is it true that he didn’t play any of the bass parts on the debut album? How is the lawsuit that he has against the band faring?

Spencer: I think pretty much everything has been said on this subject. It was not an easy thing to do because we were all friends but things were moving fast for the band and, at least in our opinion, Brent was not on the same page as the rest of us, as far as growing as a musician. He did not play the bass parts, Brendon played all of them. Brendon is a really good musician - if you saw our last tour, you saw him play guitar, piano and drums. We recorded our album on a very tight budget and tight budgets mean tight schedules. Having Brendon play the bass parts made the most sense, given our time constraints. As far as the lawsuit, we haven’t received anything about it. He was paid an equal share of all the tours he was on and, as far as I know, he’s been paid and is being paid all the royalties he’s owed.

Do you regret the comment made on MTV Canada about Brent being the first one drunk on New Years since it put the band in a bad light for saying it? What made you Jon give the response in the first place?

Jon: The truth is it just slipped out - you can tell from the way I covered my mouth right after that I realized I wasn’t supposed to say that. I think everyone has those moments, mine happened to be on camera.

What's with firing your old bass player?

The one snag in the band's quick climb was its split with Brent Wilson this spring, which brought Walker into the band.

Ross: It was tough, because we all went to high school together. It just got to a point where it didn't seem like he was taking it seriously and was along for the ride. And he started to get into things we weren't happy about. It was a hard decision, but with Jon in the band now, we know it was the right decision.

Walker: This band is everything to these guys, so it's not fair to them if someone in the band can't keep up.

Ex-Panic! At The Disco Bassist Initiates Legal Action Against Band
08.09.2006

Brent Wilson says he played on LP and is owed 25 percent of its royalties.

Former Panic! at the Disco bassist Brent Wilson has had nearly three months to decide exactly what he would do in the wake of his abrupt departure from the band he helped form.

And apparently, he's decided to sue.

On Monday, Wilson and his lawyer began legal proceedings against his former bandmates, mailing Panic! a letter that gave the group 14 days to pay the ousted bassist the royalties he believes he's owed from sales of the band's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out album. If Panic! does not comply within the two-week deadline, Wilson said, he will take the case to court.

"Basically, I want to get what I deserve: my fair percentage from the album," Wilson told MTV News. "We sent them the letter as a way of saying, 'Look, if you decide to give me the money I deserve — as it's written out in the contract we drew up — then, great. If not, well, we're prepared to go to court.' "

While he confirmed the legal action, Wilson declined to tell MTV News the name of his legal representative and said he was amazed that he is already receiving calls for comment on the letter.

"We just started this whole thing, like, three days ago, and honestly, I don't want my lawyer to be flooded with phone calls he wasn't expecting," he said. "But I can promise you that he did send them a letter. We're just preparing for everything that's [occurring] right now, because I want all of this to happen the right way."

A spokesperson for Panic! at the Disco said the band has no comment on the matter, and added that this was the first anyone within the group's camp has heard about Wilson's letter.

Wilson said that after he parted ways with Panic! in May, he took several weeks off to let the whole thing blow over — and even after his former bandmates made accusations that he never played a note of music on Fever, he was still unsure about pursuing legal action against them (see "Panic! At The Disco Split Gets Nasty: Band Alleges Wilson Did Not Play On LP"). But now, Wilson said that enough time has passed, which apparently also means that it's high time for him to refute the band's claims.

"I don't understand why they would say I didn't play on the record," he said. "I was there every day at the studio, and I wrote things and I showed [Panic! frontman] Brendon [Urie] how to play certain sections. We had a contract that said that each member got paid individually, so legally I am due my 25 percent from the record.

"I don't care what people think of Brent Wilson," he continued. "I honestly don't care if my reputation has suffered from what they've said, or will suffer because of this suit. All I care about is the fact that my supposed friends have f---ed me out of what's legally mine."

— James Montgomery

PANIC! COURT CASE UPDATE
Body: A court case is in the making. Brent and his lawyer have taken the next step. A letter has been sent to Panic! stating that Brent will be taking them to court if he has not received an agreement from the band within 14 days. If this 14 day grace period is neglected, further measures will be taken. If Panic! does not agree to Brent's proposal, the case may take anywhere from two to four years. If, in the event the band does not come to a settlement, the IRS will have to get involved and things will get even uglier.
When I first heard that Brent got kicked out I was just like '... W-w-w-what?' So went onto panicatthedisco.com and read that Brent left, but the way they wrote it, I thought he died. I cried because I thought he was dead. I seriously went through the five stages of loss. Then I kept it in my mind that he had died, then I stumbled on you guys! Now I'm still kind of depressed, because Brendon was always my second favorite, right after Ryan, 'cause thats how it always went for me, Ryan, Brendon, Brent, then Spencer. Then it was just, Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeent! Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeent! I did that for days, sulking over his 'death'. But he's not dead. So YAY!

Panic! At The Disco Split Gets Nasty: Band Alleges Wilson Did Not Play On LP
06.12.2006 5:47 PM EDT

Former bassist wonders if he was booted over money.
Former Panic! at the Disco bassist Brent Wilson
Photo: Jason Campbell
The split between Panic! at the Disco and former bassist Brent Wilson just got a whole lot nastier, with both sides hurling unpleasant accusations at each other.

On Monday (June 12), MTV News spoke to Wilson at his home in Las Vegas, and it
quickly became clear that he was in no mood to make nice with his former bandmates.

"I was kicked out of the band," he said. ""It was 100 percent a surprise to me. We were about to leave for a show in California, and they called me the night before and told me I was out of the band. The only reason they gave was that it was for 'musical purposes.' Everything was good and fine, we had just gotten back from a tour in Europe, and there had been no previous conversations about anyone leaving the band. I don't know why they chose me."

Of course, that story is in stark contrast to the one Panic told MTV News last month, when guitarist Ryan Ross said the split was "a decision we all came to as a band" (see "Panic! At The Disco Claim Split With Bassist Was Amicable, Mutual Decision").

"The [story] they told you made me really angry, because they said the matter was discussed as a band, and it wasn't discussed at all," Wilson said. "It was done as a phone call and the only person who spoke was [drummer] Spencer [Smith]. Apparently [frontman] Brendon [Urie] and Ryan were on the speakerphone too, but they didn't say a word. They never even said they were sorry."

And it's a pretty safe bet to say that Wilson won't be getting that apology anytime soon, because when MTV News reached out to Panic for comment on the matter, the bandmembers didn't pull any punches.

"We made the decision based on Brent's lack of responsibility and the fact that he wasn't progressing musically with the band," Smith said in a lengthy e-mail message. "Brent did not write any of his bass parts on the record. Brent did not record one note of bass on the record. Brendon and Ryan wrote all of the bass parts and Brendon recorded all of the bass parts. We had to simplify some of the bass parts that were recorded because Brent could not play them live.

"Our record would've sounded absolutely the same even if Brent wasn't in the band during the writing or recording process," he continued. "These are all things that only a few people know, and we were fine with that. Stating these things would only make Brent look bad and we had no intention of doing that."

Wilson also claimed that his departure means he'll miss out on the hefty financial windfall Panic was set to receive as part of their headlining tour, which kicked off last Tuesday (see "Panic! At The Disco Announce First Headlining North American Tour"). He says he can't help but think that the two factors were related.

"We were about to start a tour where the band would've been bringing home around $300,000, or something like $50,000 apiece, and basically they kicked me out, so the question about money goes through my head a lot," he said. "And I believe it. Brendan and Ryan can both play multiple instruments and Spencer handles a lot of the business, so that sort of leaves me as the odd person out."

Panic contend that this statement just isn't true, and that most of the money the band is set to make on the tour is being spent before it even materializes, on expensive stage props and guest performers (Los Angeles-based Vaudeville troupe Lucent Dossier was recently added to the bill for all shows).

"Anyone who goes to a show on this tour will see that we have a lot of production on the road with us," Smith wrote. "We are basically breaking even with the amount of money it is costing us to put on the show that we want to put on. So any statements from Brent about the amount of money that we are bringing in on this tour are uninformed. Brent showed no interest in the business side of the band, therefore he really doesn't have any idea what is going on money-wise with the band. ... We have never and will never make any decisions with this band based on money."

Wilson declined to comment on whether he plans to pursue legal action against his former band, but claimed that he's not looking for a big payday. He just wants the band's fans to know what happened.

"Panic was my life. I'm 18 and I thought I had things figured out: I gave up baseball in high school because of this band, and I could've gotten a college scholarship," he said. "Now I'm taking some classes and my dad owns his own business, so I'm helping him out. But I'm not going to lie: The whole thing is really difficult. I never thought my best friends would do this to me."

As for Panic, Smith said they'd like to put the whole thing behind them.

"With all of this being said, we hope we can move past this and continue to grow as a band," Smith wrote. "We would like to thank every single person who has supported us for the past few weeks and look forward to seeing you all in the near future."

— James Montgomery

Source: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1534131/20060612/panic_at_the_disco.jhtml?headlines=true
