334 Good Days in Tacoma: Five Mile Drive

There are some amazing views to be had of the Narrows Bridge along the Five Mile Drive, at Point Defiance.   Yesterday I had some kids in serious need of an extended cool down cycle; I drove them out to Ruston and drove sloooowly through the park until life didn't seem quite so dramatic anymore. Right now is the perfect time to wind your way through the giant ferns and drive through the remains of the huge tree that came down across the roadway by what used to be Never Never Land.  (Never Again Land?)  It's just cold enough to stay in the car and enjoy the view.  The Five Mile Drive is my favorite spot for driving sleeping or angry children, for figuring out how to handle the acceleration of an unfamiliar car (keeping the speedometer at 20 mph is a pretty good trick), or just for forgetting whatever it is you were upset about.  At least, it always works for me.

Five Mile is awesome for just a fun drive. Yet last time I was there, it was all closed due to trees being down. But that was about a week ago, so they might of finally opened it again.

Never Never Land. Ah. How fun that once was. It's sad that it closed down. But some structures are still there and not completely destroyed. :)

It was open again two days ago when we drove it. It's kind of interesting to look at all the fallen trees.

I love the five mile drive. There's a particularly beautiful pull away scenic viewpoint that I always be sure to show people (though I'm blanking on the name).

A warning however. If you do wind up staying inside after the sun sets, be warned that they lock both of the gates, in and out, so you will be trapped inside unless your car is small enough to maneuever between bolders and trees like mine was.

Personal experience is a bitch.
