the only thing wrong with tacoma
the only thing wrong with tacoma are the people who insist on complaining about it and still living here.
go away.

what do we lack? really?
not enough late night trendy cafes open for you?
not enough likeminded pretentious scene kids for you?
not enough record stores with snobby employees who look down on your musical taste for you?

make your own fun. invent and create yourself. you dont need trendy establishments to have fun. you dont need a bigger crowd of people *just like you* to get along with. just make a couple fucking friends who *gasp!* arent like you! maybe TALK to some people who are a little different. perhaps get to know them and you'll realize that their clothes not being as cool as yours doesnt make them less of a fucking person.

i've lived here all my life, and i do it just fine. but the constant complaining about how every other surrounding (and coincidentally hip) city is better than this one...well that just happens to BE the worst thing that i can think of in this town.

The only thing I really don't like about Tacoma is that I wish there was a decent Goth/Industrial club so I could go dancing without having to make the trek to Seattle. But I don't think I've ever actually complained about it. Just wishful thinking.

I'll second that!
I do not live in Tacoma any more, but I sure miss it!
It has a special vibe to it, you wont find any where else......
People are amazed when I say I love Tacoma.....
Anyway kudos to you!

I like it here...I don't like how hard it is to make friends here. Everyone just seems so happy with their own defined group, they're just not interested in making any new friends. :(

i think when you have a few groups of people who are a little more socially aggressive it causes other people to clam up. our music scene, for instance, used to be easy to make friends in. people were friendly. now if you go to a local show you have to worry about how you look and what people think.

yeah I'm not a big fan of shows in Tacoma...I've only actually been to two or three, and though the music was good, the people sucked. :(

I second the making friends thing.
I've been here for 2.5 years and have a few friends.. but no close friends. It seems that a lot of peopel in this town seem to not go past their high school friends.

This is also my only complaint.

That's exactly what I think! About the high school friends thing.
The only friends I really have that live in Tacoma now are MySpace friend, lol.

Agreed! My husband hates living here, but I've made him deal with my love of Tacoma for almost five years now. No moving back to Sumner! NO!

I work in Bellevue and no one there understands what Tacoma's charm is. I used to work right in downtown...I could walk a block to Abella's (best bbq chicken pizza ev-ar or down the block the other way to Chin's (which I miss something fierce now). I could walk across the street to a park and see the water or get on the Link to Freighthouse Square. Bellevue is nothing compared to this...all chichi cafes and expensive shops. Give me the $3 steak night at the Harmon anytime!

damn I have had so much fun in Tacoma in the 2+ years I have lived here. Good music scene with fun and mostly friendly people.
I do wish there was a industrial bar to go danceing at but hell....gotta love T-Town

I'm not knocking Tacoma, but...it does seem a shame that a city like Tacoma with Goth/Industrial written all over it...doesn't have a club catering to the big potential goth/industrial scene here.

It's because everyone wants to enjoy a goth/industrial scene but no one wants to put the work into getting one going.

i used to live in tacoma from age 5-19, but it was 98443 zip code, and much closer to puyallup. then i lived sammamish/redmond for quite a few years, then in seattle for half a year.

we recently bought a home near downtown tacoma (a few weeks ago) and i love this area. there's so much history and charm. i love all the little independent shops & stores, art, museums and parks. the old houses, the sidewalks and trees.

i liked living in seattle to a certain extent, but i feel like i have most of that here minus the overcrowded clubs and horrible traffic and parking.

but yeah, on first impression when we tell friends we live in tacoma now, they don't come off too excited for us...but after they come visit us and we spend time out and about in this area they're congratulating us and most often times say they never realized tacoma was this big and had this much "stuff" going on.

Some people can't afford to move. People like me. I personally don't hate Tacoma, just certain aspects of it.

One of my best friends is doing just what you suggest and I hate it.

i really liked living in tacoma. it had enough options and choices for things but didn't feel too overwhelming.

i totally agree with everyone else saying it's hard to meet people. most people are friends with people they have known from growing up, so it was hard to meet new people to hang out with.

i live in portland now and so far, the biggest thing that make it a lot more enjoyable than tacoma is that things are within walking distance from most areas and that the mass transit system is a lot easier. it would have been impossible to live in tacoma without a car. i had to drive all the time. i've been in portland for almost two months and i've only had to fill my gas tank up once.

if i move back to washington when i'm done with school i'll def. move back to tacoma, though. i just hope that in that time tacoma isn't 'discovered' even more and it's too expensive to live in!

Fuck yeah, man. I've been saying this for ages. People constantly complaining about Tacoma bugs the shit out of me. Either they can put up with it, or try to change it, or they can fucking leave. The rich did it when 16 was built.

And there are plenty of people now, young people, who are ready to put some time and energy and their financial futures out on the line to make this a better place. People's self-depricating humor about Tacoma is a slap in the face to those people and their efforts - and those are not the people we want to alienate, when there is so much potential here.

Thanks for the post. Gives me hope.

you guys who are into the goth industrial thing should really pool together. its not really my thing, but i think its cool. personally, i'd like to see an all-ages venue for punk rock that isnt tied to religion. putting on shows one at a time at community centers or renting clubs is one way to raise money to eventually have a dedicated venue. its hard work but it will be worth it when there's a place to hang out and have fun and for community to grow.
