I am going to be moving to Tacoma for 1 year starting in September. I just thought I would say hello, introduce myself, and ask a few questions to start getting oriented. I have finished 2 years of my master's in architecture at Yale and am taking the year off. I have thankfully discovered the Exit133 blog which is great.
1) Where do you all hang out? I am from Tacoma, but I moved away in 2000 when I was 18. So stuff like bars, etc. are all somewhat foreign to me. New restaurants, shops, etc. recommendations would be appreciated! I usually liked being in the downtown area and have subsequently found things like the Satellite coffee, Urban Exchange store, and the shops in Sanford & Son. I'd also like to know about any new art galleries that may have opened up in addition to the museums. And music venues! Parties!
2) I will need a job, or jobs. Ideally I'd like an entry level/internship/part-time job in an architecture firm. I'm willing to commute a fairly long distance (Seattle area) for the right firm, but was wondering if there is anywhere in Tacoma that is recommended both in the quality of the work & also on being a good workplace with a positive environment. I know the economy is tight right now, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try... or even if the local museums have exhibition design internships or anything like that.
I have also worked for several years as a graphic designer & fashion/portrait photographer in NYC, so I hope to freelance in photo and design as well. If any of you happen to have leads on where to look for work in these areas, or Seattle-Tacoma area modeling agencies where I can drop a book for testing, or even bulletin boards in areas frequented by high school students to post those "Do you need senior portraits? Call me!" type flyers, I would appreciate it greatly! If anyone here happens to be interested, or even just curious to take a look, I can send links to work.
3) Random stuff I would like to try. This includes learning how to knit, roller derby (if I am tough enough? I probably am incompetent), burlesque dancing, cooking with local ingredients, horseback riding, and something with the water like kayaking, scuba, or rafting in still ponds in a relaxing/lazy fashion. I also do a lot of volunteer/nonprofit activism, especially relating to urban/community issues, arts, homelessness, environmental sustainability, and LGBTQ issues. Even though I'm not going to be enrolled, is it possible to get involved with some of the student groups at UW Tacoma, UPS, or any other school that has stuff going on?
OK, I know that is a lot. Basically I just wanted to say hello and try to meet some folks before planting myself into the city! I will be glad to be back in a part of the country where all the coffee shops have heard of the Italian Soda. No one here seems to have any idea what that is! What's up, tacoma!
