NEW USERS, welcome to t_shirt_surgery, here are the most important guidelines for the community. the full list can be found on the userinfo page.
  • read the rules & tags before asking a question. we have over 9000 members so most questions have already been answered.
  • stay on topic. that means you can post anything made from or into a t-shirt. no plugging rating communities, and no posts exclusively made to sell your item.
  • for specific topics like stencilling, skirts, or other crafts, look at the userinfo to find a more appropriate community. don't ask for a specific stencil here or how to make something non-t-shirt related, there are other comms to deal with those topics.
  • don't be offensive & criticize negatively. persistently nasty commenters will be banned.
if you deliberately break these guidelines you will be banned. having said all that, enjoy the community, have fun and be crafty!

EDIT: Changed the back from a previous post [Monday|13 Jul 2009|12:38pm]

I wasn't too happy with the fit of the shirt, so I sliced up the back and now tie it. ;)

    From that to this... )

It's not perfect, but it works! ;) It's over 100 degrees here in Southern California now so I don't feel bad walking around in a barely-there shirt.

Made from an old Evanescence Tshirt that got too small...

    Another DIY )

I'm pleased and disappointed with this at the same time. The neck area didn't turn out how I had hoped (thats what I get for not using a pattern). But, that aside, it came out pretty good. Can be laced all the way down, or halfway (plan on getting wider ribbon for this though).
Plus, I do feel a bit rusty. I lent out my sewing machine for a period of time and just got it back... this was my 3rd project, but I'd say.. not too shabby!

I forgot to take before pictures, but this was made from a large men's shirt (weird a weird dino-man print) and a medium men's shirt (the lacing). My cutting is rather rough, something to work on in the future.

    XL Men's Button-Up... [Saturday|11 Jul 2009|12:26pm]

This is bound to be old news for a lot of you, but this was a sewing revelation for me – It is much easier to make something when you can trace some clothes that you already own. If this is what sewing with a pattern is like, I've seriously been missing out.

I've read plenty of posts where people say they traced a pair of shorts or they used a tank top as a pattern for a new tank top, but I never really understood how you could use other clothes as a pattern without taking it apart. But then when I was making this shirt, I decided to trace the basic body shape of another button up and it saved me a ton of pin and fitting time. Typically I would have put the giant shirt on inside-out and stood in front of the mirror and pinned and pulled in and pinned and pulled in and pinned... Then to make the sleeves, I just roughly traced some cap sleeves off of another shirt. I would normally have started with a tube and shaped it from there, which takes forever and pinning on your own arm is a pain. I still had to work out some issues with these, but it was much easier and faster.

Total, this took me about 5 hours which I find amazing. It also helped that I got the curved hem right on the first shot.

I need some help.  I work for an event that is sponsored by a boxer company, and we have to wear these boxers tomorrow.  We just got the outfits in the office today.  Well, I'm 5.5 months pregnant, and I put the boxers on, and I either look like a gangster if they are under my stomach, or I look like humpty dumpty if I pull them over my stomach. I can't have the band around my stomach because it hurts (a lot).

How can I alter boxer shorts so that they look somewhat stylish?

I need the crotch intact because we have to wear suspenders and I don't want the boxers pulled over my head (although I look so terrible in them, I guess I wouldn't mind my face covered!)

Anyway, I know they aren't t-shirts, but they are t-shirt material, and you guys are artistic geniuses.

    Backless shirt? [Thursday|09 Jul 2009|11:54pm]

    jnphotos
Hey everyone. I am in dire need of advice. I'm getting a corset piercing on my back sometime in the next couple of weeks and I need to wear a shirt that doesn't have a back to it. Of course I have scoured the stores for something that would work and have not found anything. My piercer suggested that I cut up a t shirt to make it work but I have yet to find a satisfactory technique to do this. All the tutorials I've found require ties that go across the back. If anyone could suggest a way of going this I'd be forever grateful. Thanks!

I'm not sure if someone already did something similar to this, but I have yet to see anything.
For pretty much all of the t-shirt recons that I've seen the shirt oughta be too large. But here's my problem, I've got a couple nice shirts that a dear friend got me a while back and they no longer fit. I was wondering, is there a good way to remake them so I can still wear them?

    Hey guys!

I was hoping to have something more fancy to share, since I finally got my hands on a copy of Generation T (lent by my wonderful Canadian friend), but then my sewing machine decided to break down on me. Luckily for me, there's no-sew stuff in the book as well, haha. Apologies for the photo quality, but my camera really doesn't like taking photos inside, and it's freezing outside! Yay for the failings of technology!

    Onto the recons! )

Thanks for looking y'all! I hope the pictures aren't too horrible for you to get the idea of things. :D

my first post: weird al [Monday|06 Jul 2009|12:03pm]

    mythomanic
so I've been watching this community for some time, and was finally inspired to hijack my mom's sewing machine instead of trying to do everything by hand. (I honestly believe the last time she used the machine was to make my 'little red riding hood' costume for my third-grade storytelling competition, 15 years ago...)

I found this XL "weird al yankovic...the saga begins" at a thrift store and fell in love with it. picked up another t-shirt (the blue straps and bottom) to match...gotta love Dollar-a-Pound.

    Quick question [Saturday|04 Jul 2009|3:28pm]

    luvherbones
I have a really simple question that I can't figure out from looking at the tags...

I have a plain jersey tee that I want to change the neckline on. If I just cut it and leave the edges raw, I know they will roll, but how far? Do I need to stitch around the edges to prevent them from going too far?

Hope this question makes sense, TIA.
