NEW USERS, welcome to t_shirt_surgery, here are the most important guidelines for the community. the full list can be found on the userinfo page.
  • read the rules & tags before asking a question. we have over 9000 members so most questions have already been answered.
  • stay on topic. that means you can post anything made from or into a t-shirt. no plugging rating communities, and no posts exclusively made to sell your item.
  • for specific topics like stencilling, skirts, or other crafts, look at the userinfo to find a more appropriate community. don't ask for a specific stencil here or how to make something non-t-shirt related, there are other comms to deal with those topics.
  • don't be offensive & criticize negatively. persistently nasty commenters will be banned.
if you deliberately break these guidelines you will be banned. having said all that, enjoy the community, have fun and be crafty!

    thanks everyone! :-D

i haven't posted in.... maybe a year or more?? busy busy busy. i'm not sure if this is TOTALLY following the rules, so if not, feel free to delete this post.
i have reconstructed a few things in the past year or so. behind the cut you can see pictures of them, as well as a ton of shirts from throughout my entire sewing history, starting back in high school! ew. i'm moving to nicaragua in about a month, and moving somewhere else when i get back to milwaukee, so i have to get rid of a TON of stuff. sooooo... i have to sell some of my shirts :[
but maybe that is good news for you! :-D

this is the first time i've ever sold any of my stuff, ever. the stuff i made within the first 2-3 years of reconstructing was ALL sewn by hand, so the stitching is ugly, weird, not strong enough in some spots, the whole piece is sketchy in general, etc. even the stuff i make now is still not "sellable" quality in my mind. i leave lots of raw edges, when stuff rips i just wear it anyway, etc. my clothes are sketchy! but i like them that way. if you're into this, this is for you! if not, i thought maybe people might want to get some as inspiration, to help beginners see how it is pieced to together, to use as a pattern of sorts, to rip apart and make something else out of... who knows!

so, for this reason, i'm selling everything for $5 each. $2 shipping. yep, only $7. i hate to part with everything, but i don't wear them at all, and someone else might benefit from having them?

    WARNING: WAY TOO MANY PICTURES
    bye bye stuff )

hope you are all using your holiday spare time to get creative and make awesome stuff.
i will be back very soon with new stuff. i basically made an entire new wardrobe so i could survive the central american summer!

    first post! [Saturday|05 Dec 2009|4:22pm]

Hello everyone! I know this is long overdue, i've been a member of this community since the summer, but i was 'researching' all the work people do, because for my senior show as a fashion major, i'm deconstruct-reconstructing old boy band tshirts (nsync, backstreet boys, and a spice girls too haha). i needed ideas on how to do it and make it look professional, and when i make the final project i'll post it here!

in the meantime, here are some other surgeries and designs i've done which have been inspired here.follow me )

thank you all again and keep up the amazing work! reworking old shirts is such a necessity in this economy, and youre all so talented at what you do

    Sweater Recon [Saturday|05 Dec 2009|12:55pm]

    ___underglass
    Hey guys,
I've searched the archives and was unable to find the answer to this. I have several vintage knit sweaters that I want to make smaller and alter. How should I go about this? Is there a certain type of needle and/or stitch length that I should be using? I have only reconstructed things made of "easy" fabric so I have no idea where to even start.

    Thanks!

It has been ages since I've posted! I loooooove threadless tees with a passion and i have a kind of constant pile of them to reconstruct... and i keep adding to that pile! here are some of the things i've done, plus some from scratch love for ya.

non-blurry pictures, more recons, and from-scratch goodness below the cut! )

    A few notes:

Threadless is in the midst of their annual Christmas sale, & today every tee on their site is 9$! I just placed an order & can't wait to get my tees. CHECK IT OUT!

Quite a bit of what I posted is for sale in my shop HERE. You're probably not in the mood to be advertised to--it is black friday, after all--and i'm certain you're clever enough to make the stuff yourself. But if you wanted to take a peek, I'd adore you forever!

    Kisses!

Tube dress w/ Corset sides? And memories Q [Monday|23 Nov 2009|3:57pm]

    simba15
Hey there! First off, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I can't seem to access the memories section. On the profile page for the community it says "18,206 Journal Entries, 150 Tags, 0 Memories, 0 Virtual Gifts, 1 Userpic" Is there something I need to do to be able to view these or am I looking in the wrong area? Sorry if this is a stupid Q ;)

On to more exciting matters. I have an oversized tshirt I plan on turning into a tube dress. I'd like to use elastic at the top but I want to spruce it up a bit more and possibly do corset lacing up the side. I've never done anything like that before and my question is, will I be able to do that and still have the elastic around the top to hold it up? If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it. Again sorry if this has been asked already but I can't get to the memories so I'm not sure. ;)

    Thank you!

The Creepy Cat Shirt Returns [Friday|20 Nov 2009|2:07am]

    colleendetroit

Having cut off the hem of the original pink cat tee to use for my skirt project (previous post), I also removed the original sleeves and slimmed the sides. I used dark heather grey t-shirt fabric from a shirt I no longer wear for the wide waistband and gathered sleeves (the original hem on the sleeves served as casing for elastic and the sleeve is gathered at bit the shoulder). Lastly, I folded over the thick ribbed collar and zig-zag stitched it down so it would be a more open neckline. :)

how would you do this.... [Thursday|19 Nov 2009|3:26pm]

    notanotherxerox
I've been wanting to try a shirt like this for a while but I'm planning on starting off with a t-shirt, so I'm kind of confused with how to do it. How would you guys suggest making something like this? I'm not going to do the ruching down the middle, its the knot I'm having trouble with. Thanks for your time!!!

Quick breezy skirt...... [Thursday|19 Nov 2009|12:28am]

    colleendetroit
FIRST TIME POSTER, RECENT LURKER. ;D

I've had this creepy pink cat-face shirt from when I was a kid and found this GIANT MUMU (MAI TAIS, anyone? lol) at a thrift store a few years ago (the fabric is so lightweight and breezy) and decided to make a skirt. I wanted to make this for summer but got lazy...but it was 80+ degrees today in SoCal so it's definitely still 'seasonal' for me. ;)

For now, I just used the t-shirt for the plain pink waistband, but will probably make something with the freaky cat print...just haven't figured out what yet. GOTTA use it for something! There's a MESS of MUMU left for scrap too...whee, textiles.

    Started with this...
