| The Edge of Propinquity - Volume 42 |
[Jun. 15th, 2009|11:27 am] |
 Volume 42: June 2009 Hello,
Welcome to the Edge of Propinquity. Volume 42 is now published. The hot month of June brings with hotter tempers. For one person, it gets the best of their friendship. For another person, it leads to everlasting vengeance. In another story, we have vengeance from the past affecting the present and we have a choice mad, not in anger, but in care and thought.
Luminations - Curve by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad Twenty-five years ago, Bobby Whittaker betrayed and helped to murder Mattie Ives. Now Mattie is on a path of vengeance against all of the people responsible for her death. Bobby Whittaker died in a car wreck seven years after he helped kill Mattie. But Mattie isn't about to let that little detail get in the way of her revenge.
Santa Maria - Stars by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan Daphne gets one last message from Rodina and her son has news for her, too. Brady and Calliope grow closer while Ant tries to calm Rod down, only to be interrupted with another crisis.
Solstice - Spring, Part Three by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23 The best-laid plans of gods and men are often undone by a single whim, and as Vulcan succumbs to his capricious temper, a nighttime chase unfolds through the winding hills of the countryside - a chase which can have only a single winner.
Danyael - If At First You Don't Succeed by Nick Bergeron Doing good can be a lot more complicated than it seems. If you don't think about what you're doing, you can often do more ill than good, or find yourself in dire straights. They say that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Mine was paved with quarters.
June - Choice by Alma Alexander AKA anghara It is Essen's birthday and as a birthday gift, an angel gives Essen the choice to have the life that could have been. But Essen is wary as gifts come with a price and she isn't sure she wants to pay the price to have a life she's only dreamed of.

| The Edge of Propinquity - Volume 41 |
[May. 15th, 2009|10:31 am] |
 Volume 41: May 2009 Hello,
Welcome to the Edge of Propinquity. Volume 41 is now published. May is Spring in full bloom and high spirits. All of nature is shifting and growing. Just like the Edge of Propinquity. This month we have the first step of a long journey, the first step in a plan of revenge, the first murder of a new darkness, the first acceptance that not everything can be done as planned and a new relationship growing out of an old one.
Luminations - Connections by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad Private investigator Chester Hall is tracking down the men who murdered Mattie Ives, but it's a job that he can't do alone. Reluctantly, he begins reestablishing old connections. He'll have to learn to accept some help, because with what Chess is up against, he'll need more than just Mattie's disembodied spirit on his side.
Santa Maria - Encounters by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan The Chroniclers shed some light on Ant's odd experience while Skipping, Calliope and Brady have a chance encounter while search for missing Joel. Mackenzie has an encounter at the beach leaving him worried but relieved while Rod has an encounter that leaves him horrified.
Solstice - Spring, Part Two by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23 Vulcan's kept Bacchus sober (or nearly) the last two days, working to come up with a plan to discredit or disgrace Mars, the God of War, returning home from a tour in Iraq. But spring sets our minds to pleasure more often than to penitence, and once on the barstool, old habits die hard.
Danyael - Call to Adventure by Nick Bergeron I love mornings. Everything is fresh and filled with energy. I've set myself up to start anew with the morning, and I think the universe is finally going to let things line up for me. After all, when I'm doing the work of an angel, how can I go wrong? I just need to hit the unemployment office and fill out a few forms.
Guest Author - Choking on Red Flowers by Mari Ness AKA mariness When a small grey girl invades his dreams and the dreams of his friend, almost killing her, David knows something is horribly wrong. The two of them join together to figure out what the little grey girl wants before one of them winds up dead.

Welcome to The Edge of Propinquity. Volume 40 is now published. April is a month full of tricks and traps. This month, we have a trap sprung on an enemy, a trap planned for another enemy, the trick of dealing with the truth, the effort of avoiding a trap and the trick of compromising one's faith. April is a tough one and the bloodshed is painful.
Luminations - Falls by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad Mattie Ives begins working her way down her hit list, following a trail of clues left by a man who once handled Richard Harrington's finances. Her investigation leads her to a burned-out house in a small town, and to evidence of a past horror. Especially when the cop doing the investigating happens to be one of the names on Mattie's list.
Santa Maria - Omens by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan Ant experiences something new and impossible, Rodrigo worries about Jackson Montgomery- and he should. Meanwhile Mac gets back to nature and his mother has another run-in with Rodina. Later Daphne makes an alarming discovery.
Solstice - Spring, Part One by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23 Spring brings new life, new awakenings, and new trouble to old friendships in Solstice. When you've spent your life sheltering someone from the unpleasant truth, how can you deny them when they ask for help - no matter what that help might be?
Danyael - Scorched Earth by Nick Bergeron Sometimes when I clean I go a little overboard. Still, the satisfaction of a newly sparkling house and the feeling of a fresh start make it worthwhile. It's too bad that our lives are more difficult to scrub clean.
Guest Author - The Sound of Gears by Ferrett Steinmetz Herbert is a man who lost everything to one of the greatest conspiracies in the world. The only thing he has left is to work for that conspiracy to try to help those in the conspiracy's eye so that they do not also lose what is most important to them. It is a deal with a devil made of gears and blood.

[Mar. 15th, 2009|11:42 am] |
 Volume 39: March 2009 Greetings,
Welcome to The Edge of Propinquity. Volume 39 is now published. March is a time of changes for good or ill. Transitions are never easy. This month we have the compromise of principles for the greater good, a new but uneasy alliance, a debt of blood taken on by an innocent, a search for meaning and a sacrifice of blood family for chosen family.
Luminations - Exorcisms by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad Chester Hall gets hired to expose a charlatan on the set of a paranormal investigation reality TV show. It takes a hoaxer to know one, and Chess knows that Ronald Dietrich has plenty of experience when it comes to hoaxes. But by allowing an old enemy into to become an ally, has Chess incurred the wrath of a new enemy who is far more dangerous?
Santa Maria - Introductions by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan Ant’s faction, the Gamin, and the dreaded Ghost Lords meet up and plan to work together giving Brady and Kaliope a chance to spend some time together. Mac gets to know his two adopted brothers, who may be more than they seem. A cousin of Bree whom Rodrigo never knew about introduces himself.
Solstice - Winter, Part Three by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23 Old foes face each other once more in a dingy apartment building on Solstice's east side, and as a blood-price from the dawn of time is exacted, new friendships are forged in the light of a new day.
Danyael - Communion by Nick Bergeron When people are confused or depressed, often they'll turn to food. I tried that, and it didn't work out so well. Then, they'll turn to religion seeking answers. I also tried that. I didn't like the answers I got.
Guest Author - Ducks by Brendan Detzner Sometimes, family is more than just blood. It is the people and creatures you care about more than yourself. Greta loves feeding the ducks. The only problem is that her caretaker knows there are no ducks in the area. When he is faced with a set up by Greta's grandson, Greta proves she can take care of her chosen family despite her age.

 Volume 38: February 2009Hello Everyone,
Welcome to The Edge of Propinquity. Volume 38 is now published. February is a time for love, sweets and gifts of appreciation. This month we have a brand new love in the making, the ultimate sacrifice for love, the opposite of love (which is not hate but apathy), a new direction and an old relationship.
Luminations - List by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad Mattie Ives returns to the scene of her murder with the help of a psychic she has recruited. She wants to look back to the night of her killing, but a dark barrier of fear has blocked her from the memory of her own final moments. Now Mattie needs to find a way through that darkness before she can set foot on the path of vengeance.
Santa Maria - Unions by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan Brady meets the Ghost Lord Acolyte Kalliope against the backdrop of the Supernaturals of Santa Maria welcoming the Ghost Lords. Daphne believes she has specter in her home and Ant and Rod face down a haunting of their own.
Solstice - Winter, Part Two by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23 Mayor Long and Corbin have their new friend safely ensconced in Solstice … but what good will she do them if she never leaves the house? Calling in a favor means bringing in the dogs.
Danyael - A Case of the Mondays by Nick Bergeron I have a hard time getting the energy to make it to work on Monday morning. I've been accused of leading a mixed up and confused life, but I don't think I can be blamed. It's not every day you wake up already late, and have to try to make it through a work day with an angel waiting at home for you.
February - The Mask of Deslow Mansion by Gabriel Beyers Every year, five children must play the Mansion's game. Chosen by dreams, if the chosen didn't come, the Mansion would open its doors, drawing to itself an evil that would consume the time between this Halloween and the next. This year, one child is determined to make sure the Mansion would not win.

Guest Author - Ledger Entries by Glenn Lewis Gillette What would you do if you found a ledger that had the names, dates, times of death and cause for people all over your city? Would you keep it? Thank you to everyone who has voted so far. Keep it coming!
Important Bits Fiction E-zine page for my e-zine The Edge of Propinquity.
Also, two people put me up for editor. I wasn't gonna do it myself but I'm pleased as punched. Fiction E-zine Editor page for my editing of my e-zine The Edge of Propinquity.
Rambles When last I looked, The Edge of Propinquity was in the number one spot for e-zines. I am chuffed beyond words. However, with Apex, Black Gate and Jim Baen's Universe in the competition, I can't imagine TEoP will be there for long. Still, I'm happy to have people who love TEoP.
As for the editor, I'm in seventh and, at this point, I'm just happy to be nominated and in the top ten. With people like Jason Sizemore, Reece Noltey and Rhonda Parrish on the list, I'm in fine company. |

| TEoP 2008 End of the Year Letter |
[Dec. 18th, 2008|12:46 pm] |
Dear Everyone,
Thus ends the third year of The Edge of Propinquity and we are all very happy on how it turned out. "Kendrick," "Vorare" and "Luminations" completed their third year story arcs while "Santa Maria" completed its second year story arc. All of them ended on a very good note. Also, with guest authors like Alana Joli Abbot, Dylan, Birtolo, Patrice Sarath and Seanan McGuire, our Guest Quarters were well filled this year.
The Edge of Propinquity webzine will continue publication into 2009 and its fourth year. However, all good things must come to an end. Universe stories "Kendrick" by Jennifer Brozek and "Vorare" by Ivan Ewert have ended their respective runs. Their stories have been told and it is time to put them to bed. All is not lost, both Jennifer and Ivan will be staying on with The Edge of Propinquity.
Beginning next year, we will return to with the fourth year of "Luminations" by Rick Silva and the third year of "Santa Maria" by James M. Sullivan. We will also return with two brand new universes: "Solstice" by Ivan Ewert and "Danyael" by Nick Bergeron. "Solstice" centers around a community of people who cannot quite remember who or what they are while "Danyael" centers around a single man confronted by a personal mystery.
Nick Bergeron is the newest TEoP author. This is what he had to say about himself: "Nick Bergeron was born and raised in the state of Maine, which may explain why he rides to work on mooseback. He usually parks his moose in a Microsoft parking lot during business hours while on a contract. He spends his free time pretending to be someone he's not and rolling polyhedral dice, or singing his lungs out at the local karaoke joint. From time to time he can also be found attempting to 'master the game', as the kids these days say."
While Jennifer Brozek has put "Kendrick" to rest, there is no rest for the wicked. She will continue on at The Edge of Propinquity as its Editor-in-Chief, reading the slushpile, selecting the Guest Authors, editing the Universe stories and publishing the webzine on the 15th of every month. She is leaving "Kendrick" behind into order to pursue other writing opportunities.
The TEoP family wishes everyone the best of the holiday season. May the wind be ever at your back, your future bright and your stories dark.
Sincerely, Jennifer Brozek Editor, The Edge of Propinquity |

| The Edge of Propinquity 2008 Slushpile is Closed (And 2009 is now open)! |
[Sep. 30th, 2008|11:08 am] |
As of 1100 PST, I finished reading the last of the 2008 the Edge of Propinquity "Retaliation" slushpile. I just sent out the last "Yes! You made it" emails to the waiting authors. The final numbers for the year are below. To tell you the truth, I am very pleased that I got as many excellent submissions as I did. Some of these rejections were really hard. Some very good stories. Some not so good stories. I am pleased with the twelve guest stories that I did finally choose.
TEoP Slushpile Scorecard for 2008 114 total submissions read. 102 total rejections. 12 total "Yes!" responses.
So, now what? Well, now that the TEoP 2008 Slushpile is closed, the TEoP 2009 Slushpile is open with an all new theme already written up in the Call for Submissions. Because I am nice and because I want good, on-theme stories, here are the guidelines:
THEME[S] FOR 2009 The theme for the fourth year of TEoP, 2009, is "Compromise." The theme for the first year of the Edge of Propinquity was "Revelations." The theme for the second year was "Consequences." The theme for the third year was "Retaliation." Your story may encompass and expand on the previous themes.
In order to be accepted for publication, stories must fit the webzine's theme and setting. The setting is a modern day story focusing on a character deep within the hidden world that surrounds mundane society. All guest author stories must include an active compromise from one character to another. This can be mundane to supernatural (IE: Man allows monster to live in return for treasure), supernatural to mundane (IE: Werewolf allows kid to live after promised secrecy), supernatural to supernatural (IE: mage versus mage compromising over a stolen artifact) or mundane versus mundane via supernatural means (IE: Murder covered up if allowed on the cheerleading squad).
The hidden world does not have to be supernatural. It may be conspiracy based. No far future, medieval, Heaven/Hell or alternate dimension stories, please.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES 1. Your story must be an original, unpublished 2000 - 6000 word, stand-alone short story not based in any of the other Edge of Propinquity story worlds.
2. Send submissions to gaaneden@gmail.com with the subject line "TEoP SUBMISSION: [Title Name]".
3. All submissions must be sent in plain text in the body of the email. Emails with attachments will be deleted without being read. If your story requires specific formatting, use standard plain text formatting techniques.
4. If your story is selected, you will need to provide a 100x100 pixel black and white headshot as well as a 100-150 word biography to be published with your story. Please see the Guest Quarters section of the site for examples.
5. No simultaneous submissions.
6. Note: You should recent a confirmation of receipt of your story within 48 hours of submission. If you do not receive acknowledgment, please query. After that, you should receive an answer within 8 weeks of submission. If you do not receive an answer as to whether or not the Edge of Propinquity will retain your story after 8 weeks, please query. |
