also, it's not just up to the individual. straight edge's "rules" have been laid down by years and years of edge bands and members of the community. of course you can "include" other things as a part of YOUR personal 'straight edge', but when it comes down to it, the BASIC IDEALS that make up straight edge are no drugs, no alcohol, no tobacco products, and no promiscuous sex. that coupled with a basic knowledge of what straight edge is and where it came from makes up edge as a whole. if you say, because you believe in the consumption of caffeine to be a negative thing, that caffeine consumption isn't edge, you're wrong. that's just your own personal belief. edge has it's guidelines, anything beyond that is not necessarily straighr edge.

It's not like we're interpreting biblical scripture here or anything. As far as I can see, there isn’t a definitive dogma of edge. Almost every post here is whether or not something is breaking edge. There’s a loose understanding that continually evolves. But there’s a certain understanding that by claiming edge, you’ll abide by the major points of abstinence that supposedly represent the three X’s. Don't be a slut. Don't throw your life away. Make your own life choices. Try to reach a level of purity in your existence. Don’t cheapen your own value with negative shit. Edge is not about morality. It is to a certain extent, but there is a lot of negative shit that gets associated with edge; especially violence. By living clean and in control of ourselves, we’re given a sense of pride in our very existence. We’re not like the others.
You can’t look to Ian MacKaye for answers. Minor Threat laid the first few bricks of the foundation, but the edge community has built the rest of the movement.

I’d say that since I believe a good majority of the movement agrees in the “don’t fuck” aspect of edge, then yes. No promiscuous sex is something that would be expected from someone who claims edge.

As far as I've been able to gather, the "no fuck" idea came about in the late 80s with the Christian-core goings-on in NYC.

For me, straight edge is about respecting my body; and, in my opinion, fucking anything that walks isn't respecting my body. Promiscutiy, to me, means sexual canoodling outside of a commited relationship. That, along with don't drink and don't smoke, make up the three pillars of my edge.

	I think the "don't fuck" aspect of straight edge is more lenient than the other aspects of edge. One person can't say that this girl or guy meant THIS to another girl or guy. There are obvious exceptions but I think as a whole it's open to discussion and people might have different ideas concerning it, all being correct in my eyes. (no pun intended) (Reply to this)

Don't Use Tobacco (smoked, snuffed, or chewed)

Don't Drink Alcohol (this is ethyl alcohol, wine, spirits, beer)

Don't Use Recreational/Illicit Drugs

No Promiscuity (don't be a whore)

it is just that, no opinions, or anything else, if do not believe that the things listed are social evils and need to be avoided to better yourself then you are not Straight Edge

but most of all, you should know what you are claiming.
