Sam Raimi's 'Wizard's' lands leads Craig Horner, Bridget Regan to star in syndicated series

NEW ORLEANS -- Craig Horner and Bridget Regan have been tapped to star in Sam Raimi's syndicated series "Wizard's First Rule," which launches in the fall.

The scripted series, an hourlong weekly from Disney-ABC Domestic Television and ABC Studios, is based on Terry Goodkind's book "Wizard's First Rule" and epic fantasy series "The Sword of Truth."

Horner will star as woodsman Richard Cypher, who transforms into a magical leader and joins with a mysterious woman named Kahlan (Regan) to stop a bloodthirsty, sinister tyrant.

Horner, an Australia native, recently co-starred on the Australian series "Blue Water High." Regan recently co-starred in the Broadway comedy "Is He Dead?"

"Wizard's" has been cleared in 95% of the country for its fall launch. Production on the 22 episodes begins this month in New Zealand.

Raimi is executive producing with Robert Tapert, Joshua Donen, Ned Nalle and John Shiban.

i always pictured richard as older. craig horner looks very boy-ish. the woman playing kahlan is an interesting choice. she looks more like a mord-sith, perhaps it's the hair.

I agree. The guy for Richard is too baby-faced and the woman for Kahlan is older and less voluptuous than I would have chosen (plus, her hair and eyes...... let's just say I expect lots of brown hair dye and green contacts for this show!)

and... definitely just noticed Horner's eyes are brown?!

I disagree with these people up there! I love em both! Then again I've never seen them actually act, but as far as the look goes... AWESOME! I can't wait to see what they do with this.

I am not disappointed with the casting thus far. I found there to be very subtle hints that Richard was young man; not immature.. just young.

Yeah, I pictured Richard as in his early twenties at the start of the series, so the age seems fine. Of course, Richard seems to be portrayed as a much bigger man, but if he does the acting well, I'm happy.

Yeah, I think finding an appropriately burly guy who can act well is harder than finding a more slender guy who has most of the attributes right.

Hmm, well at first glance at some of his pictures he does look a bit young, but at the same time I think once they're fully in costume and acting their parts they'll probably do a very good job. We can only wait until it comes out. *crosses fingers*

I'm betting on Chase. Although I hadn't thought about Zedd. Interesting idea, thanks!

I think the woman playing Kahlan is perfect, the Richard guy does look a little young thought but this is going to be the first book so it sort of works.

I'm totally liking both those choices. I'm glad they picked "unknowns" (at least for me) so there was no prior association.

I'm also curious when Ted Raimi will show up.

I think the guy playing Richard is perfect, but I'm not too sure about the choice for Kahlan. From the pictures I've seen, she looks a little old, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Really? REALLY? There'd better be some damn fine acting coming out of this guy, because... ugh. This has all been a bad idea from the start.

Ooh this is getting exciting. I figured they would cast unknowns for the roles. I agree that the guy they picked for Richard looks a little too young, but still not bad.

I thought the woman playing Kahlan looks old, as in way older than the guy plying Richard. I don't agree with their casting. However, I understand the difficulties but I will watch the show anyway.

Isn't the woman playing Kahlan from Sex and the City?

so I'm VERY disappointed with who they chose for Richard. =( This is too small and WAY too young looking. Even if he can remember his lines, he just doesn't have the PRESENCE that Richard is supposed to have. I will still watch. I don't think this was a bad idea from the start, but I think Disney doing it IS. I actually kind of like who they chose for Kahlan. She's very pretty, seems to possess a self confidence that is NECESSARY for the role. I didn't watch a lick of sex and the city so I've no clue what kind of an actress she is, but the looks are fair enough.

Epic fail on both of the choices. Craig Horner looks too much like a pretty boy, girly-man. Bridget Regan looks too old. I'd like to say that I can only hope they do better with the rest of the casting but as these two will be holding the main character postions I'm afraid this is one production that won't hold a candle to the novels. Time may prove me wrong and I sure hope I am but I remain unconvinced thus far.

I don't think these actors or this show will exactly match what anyone had in their imaginations. But Elijah Wood and Ian McKellan were not what I had imagined as Gandalf and Frodo either, but I think by most accounts, they pulled it off.

But I can tell you they will be covered on costuming/wigs/contact lens as a friend of Terry's and fan of the books is helping them with all the details to get that stuff right.

I think everyone just got on the plane for New Zealand a couple days ago. They're supposed to be starting horseback riding training and sword training when the get there as well.

As for Disney, they aren't trying to turn this into the mickey mouse club. This show has been given a huge budget. And the producers in charge of making this show are the ones calling the shots on content. Disney is just the financier / distributor.

I really don't know if these actors are up to the challenge or not. But I'll wait and see what the first few episodes are like before I pronounce judgment. It might end up being really good. Or not. Right now, the production is moving forward at breakneck speed - they've already got a commitment for the entire first season (not just the pilot episode which is more usual). The cast is now on location. Costuming is being done. Scripts are being written and shooting is going to start in June.

I don't know if it will be good or not (there are always some people who are just impossible to please). I know it won't be the books exactly. But if it's close to what the books are and the producers / cast / crew try to match Terry's vision, I'll be eager to see what they come up with.

New Orleans? Is that where it was announced or does that mean anything at all? Not important, I know, just curious because that's the area I'm from.

I'm reserving judgment on the casting until I actually see a few episodes. I think these two can make it work. I just hope they do.
