Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Perth Science Fiction Club
I've decided to move forward on the Idea of a regular meeting for Science Fiction Fans.
Currently the plan is to meet once a month, last Sunday of the month from 1pm to 5pm, $5 entry, Tea/Coffee/Milo free.

The first meeting will be on the 25th of May, though I'm stuck for a venue. Ideally the venue should be cheap, near public transport (on a Sunday), have multiple rooms and a kitchen.

If anybody has any suggestions please leave me the details and I'll investigate, I'd love to find a venue in the next week.

I have agreement in principal from WASFF that they will sponsor approximately 6 meetings and see where it goes from there. The only thing holding me back presently is the lack of a Venue.

Planned activities
1pm - 2pm Social, introductions
2pm - 3pm Presentation (any volunteers?)
3pm - 4pm Discussion "What next?"
4pm - 5pm Form an Adhoc group to oversee the next 5 meetings and kick things off.

So what would make this club different from all the other SF related clubs out there?

And good luck on finding a venue near public transport on a Sunday.
The only one I can think of is the Rod Evans Centre on the WACA end of Hay St (which the Gamers Guild hires of a Saturday), though I think it gets hired out in the mornings for a church group...

Well it would be more generalist, would encompass a wider range of interests. It would not be associated with a University. My first encouter with fandom came through the CIA at Curtin, but I wonder how many Science Fiction Fans, who might not have been as lucky miss out on discussing Science Fiction and engaging in fan activities simply because they don't know such things exists.

A club like this, with relatively minor demands on time, can certainly provide a place for such people to gather and discuss.

As to more generalist, most of the non uni based clubs are seem quite specific, anime, board games, Dr Who, Star Trek,Roleplaying. I enjoy all those, but feel by their narrower focus might dissuade some people.

Also there doesn't seem to be somewhere for us people who have moved on from Uni to meet and engage in a club atmosphere. Additionally I feel that some of the activities Swancon enages in would suit a monthly meeting.
Really though, this about providing a framework in which to explore if this kind of thing interests enough other people to make it worthwhile :)

Thanks for the venue tip, I'll look into to it tommorrow

Sounds interesting.

Don't forget to post this to the Swancon mailing list as well.

Try Cyril Jackson Sports Centre (Town of Bassendean)

Loftus Street Rec Centre (City of Cambridge / Town of Vincent - whichever one wants to rule it this week)

Alma Venville Rec Centre (City of Bayswater) http://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au/upload/bayswater/9DE1A481B1194240A378CA52CDAAE2B3.pdf

Not sure what these prices will be Pete, haven't looked into these ones as much, but they are near trainlines

Return of the FMs

Your idea reminds me of the "Fannish Meets" from the "old days" of fandom.

Maybe someone could hold the first gathering at their place?

Yah, that struck me as a possible good idea too.

In fact, my house is walking distance from a train station, hmm...
