These are some good opportunities to consider maybe later on in April.
Spring Fever Happy Hour for Volunteers - this isn't so much a volunteer opportunity but moreso a volunteer mixing event. New York Cares' Spring Fever Happy Hour is a chance to mingle witih friends, enjoy complimentary drinks courtesy of Sam Adams, and there are some raffles for prizes. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. NEXT THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2006 (ok, March, I lied.) 6:30p-10:00p at Embassy Hotel.
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK - APRIL 23-29, 2006. Not sure how we overlooked this, but the 3rd week in April has always been designated National Volunteer Week. The week has been themed "Inspire by Example 2006" and 'reflects the power that volunteers have to inspire the people they help, as well as, to inspire others to serve." There are a list of projects in which ti take part in for this week. Maybe we should think about doing something just to tie it all in - even if its an open-house information session for the SUVs!
Hands on New York Day - still have the opportunity to sign up. It is NY Cares Annual Spring Day of Service - "help make New York a cleaner, greener city by volunteering on one of the environmental calendar projects." This includes weeding, raking, mulching, and planting in parks and community gardens, both large and small, throughout the city.
On a side note, I had an amazing time last Saturday. I felt it was a really successful project - thank you Michael for organizing it. We thought maybe we'd do another project with Publicolor some time in May..? I also have pictures from the day which I will send out by the end of the week.
Thanks everyone, Andrew | | Tuesday, March 21st, 2006 | 3:49 pm [ginabugiada] |
Meeting Notes from March 20, 2006 Meeting Notes are below, following the "agenda" previously posted: --------- A. Andrew, Gina and Kendria were present B. Everyone agreed that the Publicolor event went well and would absolutely do it again. (thanks for a great job Michael!) C. Schedule Breakdown as follows: April 1- Soup Kitchen (Michael coordinating) April 22- NY Cares Day (Andrew collecting more information) May- Planting/something outdoors (Kendria collecting more information) June 11- American Cancer Society Walk July- ?? Ballooning was met with a lack of enthusiasm, due to NJ location August- PubliColor event again? Sept- Publicolor event again? October- Breast Cancer Walk November/December- Annual (?) Coat drive Possible events to add: Something with the NYC Elderly (visitation/event hosting) (Andrew researching) Hosting a mixer to introduce people to the High School for Leadership Mentor program (Gina Researching/pass off to Jennifer?) Possible BBQ with elderly, HS4leadership, ?? D.Thoughts: 1.Nationalization: Consensus that we are so small that it may be too ambitious at this point. Questions as to whether there is a similar environment as the NYC metro area to foster such an organization. Possibly change focus to encouragement for a Service Committee within existing alumni clubs... Strong desire to focus mostly on volunteering within our own group 2. Summer weekend project: Not a large amount of enthusiasm to give up time to do so. Habitat for Humanity would be a good focus for the event. Possibly hold off until we are larger (100 regularly active members) to prevent the feeling of compulsive attendance among small amount of current members. 3. Coordination with other group: Should take on a role in which SUVs is an organization in which other alumni groups feel comfortable coming to for support creating events that they desire. Encourages participation across all alumni groups/alumni. Does not necessarily "co-sponsor" events specifically organized with other groups, rather provides support to sponsoring group. 4. General: Email/Website-Everyone is excited to have a website by June (tentative). E. Closing. | | Friday, March 17th, 2006 | 2:09 pm [ginabugiada] |

SUV Meeting 2/27/06
Team: Just wanted to loop around with an update from tonight's meeting. Thanks to those who came; no worries to those who couldn't. We had five new people there tonight, three of whom had done work with the first group of SUVs last year. We went around the room and each introduced themselves and talked a bit about their own volunteer experiences, which was really helpful. One of the new people works closely with the High School for Leadership and came to the meeting specifically to find ways our group can support them, which was fantastic. Really looking forward to making that happen. Our next organizational meeting will be Mon. March 20, which falls after our event on the 18th and before our event on April 1. We ran through what we have done with the group thus far, and where we're heading. What percolated from that was that, since we have our next few months planned out, I thought the May organizational meeting should be a two-hour strategy meeting. Now, as I write this, I'm thinking that our April meeting should be the start for this conversation leading into the two-hour May meeting, so ... to that end, the May meeting will serve to do a few things: 1. Map out our goals for the Trust Fund project. We discussed this for a while tonight and I introduced everyone to the concept. I want us to spend time thinking this through - launch plan, timing, pitch to the University, etc. 2. Set a plan for SUV-centric events. We have a good handle on digging in to existing opps, and we should continue to do so, but we also want to do things that define who we are as a group. I want to explore, also, how to involve the alumni as a whole in defining who we are as a group. For those familiar with brand marketing, the current trend is what my client, Virgin Mobile, calls "open source" branding. I think that would be perfect for us: Let the alums define who we are. Make sense? 3. Plan for Fall, 2006. 4. Plan for Summer project (e.g. Habitat, etc.) From that, I'll take it upon myself, either before or after the meeting, to create a Power Point pitch for the University from that meeting. I'm going to e-mail the new folks and get them to sign up for the LiveJournal, and I'm going to post this to the LiveJournal, as well. Gina made a great suggestion in that we start to develop agendas for these organizational meetings. Makes sense at this point. In general, we want to create transparency within the group so we can discontinue use of the main email list. I'll still want to be able to dialogue with just the leadership team via this email for logistical purposes, but the bulk of the discussion about what to do, etc., should begin to take place on the LiveJournal page. Andrew, we'll look forward to hearing from you about NY Cares and what the opps are there. Michael, all systems are go for the 18th. I have to review your copy yet, and this evening will handle the form. Will send along shortly! Thanks all! Questions, let me know. Help New Orleans During Spring Break
All - See below opp. J ..... Hi Jennifer, I won't be able to make the meeting on Monday. Most of my classes this semester are at night, but I am definitely interested in some of the upcoming weekend events Michael has told me about. I also wanted to pass along an idea to you in case SUVs are interested. A group of students from my school are going to New Orleans during spring break-we're going to be doing legal type work, but there is physical work and other things to be done there. Groups or individuals can go at anytime for as long or short a period as they can. We are getting some funding from the school and doing additional fund-raisers to cover most of our costs. The website is studenthurricanenetwork.org. There might be others. See you soon! Lisa Kelly ......... | | Sunday, January 22nd, 2006 | 7:27 pm [kronstain] |
Jan. 17 Meeting Notes
Hey! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! I just wanted to follow up to last week's meeting and list out everything we discussed - we have a framework already for the first half of the year! * Jan. 26 Law School Alumni Gathering - We talked about having some brochures on hand for SUVs. * Feb. 17 meeting with NY Cares - We talked about seeing if they could come to Lubin House to provide training for our folks, rather than us go there to meet with them. * Feb. 18 or 25 - Soup Kitchen * March 11 or 18 - PublicColor (sp?) * April 22 - Clean the Park (was this with NY Cares?) * May: Flower Planting (?) * June 11 - American Cancer Society Walk at 7 a.m. * July - Children's Miracle Network in NJ * Long term - We discussed setting up an annual trip, an example being house building over Spring Break in WV with Habitat. That's all for now - I'd like to go out to the members with firm dates for the soup kitchens this week and our meeting with NY Cares, if possible. Let me know what works! Thanks, Jennifer ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . | 7:25 pm [kronstain] |
Notes from Gina
Hi everyone!!! Hope 2006 is starting off well for everyone! For me it's been a rough transition with crazy holiday stuff until the New Year, and then a cold right on top of that! anyway! I've done some research about onebrick.org and have comments for y'all below.... A suggestion that I kept intending to mention is that I think sitting down (or emailing around) a few goals for the year would be a positive way to track our growth as an organization/stay focused...... I plan to take the helm of Communications/Development (finally! I feel like I had dropped the ball for the end of December) and I'd love to know whatever happened with the Yahoo Group thing, and would appreciate anyone who could even clue me into the background of such a thing (I'll peruse myself a bit later, too).... OH! I also had been thinking that we should attempt to discover if an SU alumni holds a prominent position at any of the large charity organizations (Red Cross, NY Cares, etc), just to have a great immediate contact! How would we do this? (I'll play with google in a few, but other than that....any ideas?) OneBrick.org NOTES: *emphasis on "friendly and social atmosphere" (I think this is a great concept to copy as well! fostering new networking opportunities/friendships/etc) * 3 levels of involvement -Volunteer (just RSVP online for any event on their online calender) -Manage an Event (seems like something that a seriously committed person to that group specifically trains and works towards, not something that we can just do as an organization once, but I can email if we're that inclined to want to pursue such a thing) -Request Support (If we had an event/ needed a volunteer base to draw from/needed monetary donations we would request (post) an event 4-6 weeks in advance in which people would then RSVP to online and then show up) The headquarters for the organization is in San Francisco There are NO EMPLOYEES, everything is performed through volunteers The website has a list of 150 organizations that they have helped (WE SHOULD RESEARCH THEM!) There is a great interactive online calender on their website, but only had postings for the month of January last time I checked | | Friday, December 9th, 2005 | 11:08 am [kronstain] |
Santa for a Day
If you've ever thought of being Santa for a day, the New York Post Office wants you. Operation Santa Claus began in the 1920s, when postal workers decided to pay out of their own pockets to answer the request letters children sent to Santa. You can visit Manhattan's General Post Office to read these special letters and answer one, or as many as you can, at the James A. Farley Building at West 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue. You can sit in the Operation Santa Claus temporary office and read letters, or grab them and go. You can also go as a group or a family. If you want to get involved outside New York, first see if there is a local version where you live. If not, you can write to Operation Santa Claus, James A. Farley Building, 421 Eighth Ave., Room 3023, New York, NY 10199-9998 and a volunteer will send you as many letters as you ask for. | | Wednesday, December 7th, 2005 | 2:21 pm [kronstain] |
