Jensen Jives - SONG VOTING
It's time to vote for songs! As most of you know, [info]fallen_for_lost and I are putting together a mix CD for Jensen's birthday to be sent along with The Jensen Ackles Birthday Project. On the second, we made a post calling for you guys to make song recommendations - and hoo boy, you guys knocked it out of the park. We got over 150 song recs before it closed on the 8th.

Not all the songs that were suggested made the cut, for the most part simply because we literally couldn't find them (or we missed them - that's possible too considering how many of you guys rocked it out and recced music). Also, there are a handful of songs that we couldn't find the lyrics to but included anyway.

Now comes the hard part: voting on which songs to include. Under the cut is a (huge) poll. You may pick your favorite twenty songs overall, NOT in each part. Click on the name of the song to view the lyrics. Please do not vote more than your allotted twenty votes or you votes will not count. Also, remember it's Jensen's birthday and not Dean's, and it's probably best to go for a wide range of songs rather than a whole bunch of 'We were meant to be/I love you forever' songs. That said, use your own judgment. All the songs recommended are absolutely fantastic and anything that gets picked in the end is going to rock out loud.

Furthermore, we'd love if you could comment and say why you picked the songs you did. It's not obligatory, but it'll definitely help me and [info]fallen_for_lost and I when it comes to putting together the CD booklet. The final CD will include 29 songs.

As a slight warning: I tried to keep the song lyrics websites to the reliable ones like azlyrics and so forth, but I had to dig for some. Therefore, I can't absolutely assure you that you won't be mauled by popups when you click to see lyrics.

Voting will be open for five days and will close at 12:00EST, Feb. 14.

The CD Booklet
In addition to the actual CD itself, there is going to be a booklet included. For those interested, these are the the previews insofar as the booklet art goes. The first (the cupcaketastic one) is going to be the cover while the others will probably be included in the interior with song lyrics, notes, etc., etc.

ETA1: There have been some mislabeled songs in terms of the artists. The ones we know of to date are Little Texas - God Bless Texas and Tom Cochran - Life Is a Highway. If you know of any others that are mislabeled, we're happy to be corrected.

ETA2: Details/pictures for the CD's booklet have been added under the cut.

Ah, I'm sorry for the confusion. You may pick twenty songs, but there are going to be twenty nine tracks on the mix itself. *goes to clarify that*

I only picked three- honestly there were so many choices it was a little overwhelming. Also, I figured he probably has Back in Black and any other AC/DC song he wants already. John Mayer sucks, so none of that (it's an obliagory response from me). But whoever suggested "Who Needs Sleep"? Brilliant! I only wish I'd thought to mention "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" (any song with that title) - that's practically the Supernatural actors' anthem, so nice choice there. I also picked God Bless Texas because Jensen's a Texas country boy.

Woo! Finally, someone who shares that opinion! If I said something like that in my journal, with my friends list, I would be tared and feathered.

There's a Bon Jovi song called "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead". It's a fun little song. But after that comment Thursday night, haha....That's the writer of the episode, not Jensen so it's still a possibility, right?

I missed voting for "Cat's In The Cradle"! And I went up and down the list 29374 times to pick 20. That song kicks ass.

I wished I'd seen the Iron & Wine song while I was voting, bah. Still, it's an excellent list of songs from a wide variety of styles. Many thanks to whoever put in all the effort of coding the polls so we could see lyrics and everything, it must have taken ages!

Where the heck was I when the call for music went out?

I only picked three, too. Whoever rec'd Sparklehorse is a god/goddess. There should've been more Sparklehorse - talk about angst! I need an anti-depressant after three Sparklehorse songs. Muse and Stealers Wheel were my other picks. That's gotta be one of my least favorite Cake songs up there, too.

I had such a hard time picking, too. I was like - OMG WHICH ONE? But that one ISN'T on all the time, and so there's not too much OMG NOT AGAIN feelings to go with it (they place more than you'd think at starbucks - so yeah). But yes. Sparklehorse. I love them. I worship them. Like, eight songs are in my iPod's top 25. I'm a hor like that :)

Jensen> That changes weekly. Everything from classic rock, which is what my character listens to on the show, to country music to rock ‘n’ roll to pop-rock to alternative rock to just straight-up old school country, like Johnny Cash

I'm sorta sad more people didn't vote for God Bless Texas. I think he'd probably appreciate that one the most.

(At least, if I was filming in Canada, I'd be touched if fans sent me a "God Bless Maryland" song... you know, if there was one, haha)

Also I tried to stay away from the love songs 'cause from the past few posts about him, I'd imagine they'd freak him out.

My song didn't make the cut. I tried to upload it sooner but my comp was being tetchy and the player was fried. Here it is now for people to just enjoy.

"Old Souls", written by Paul Williams, remade by Faith and the Muse. Oringally sung in "Phantom of the Paradise"

Just FYI - "The Everclear Song" that is listed as being sung by Pat Green is actually preformed by Roger Creager. I know the website has it listed under Pat Green but I looked at the lyrics and it's really Roger Creager's song.

I didn't vote for a full 20 either. I have to say yay! for Paolo Nutini, Interpol, Beth Orton, Fall Out Boy, Kaiser Chiefs and Scissor Sisters.

Ok, so I tried to ignore my own music taste, avoid songs that could be interpreted as "we're meant to be" songs (I think I got... one? And that one is more about happiness in general); and I tried to keep the lyrics non-freakout-material and mostly either ok or as a message to him from fans.

This is what I ended up with:

3 Doors Down - Landing in London, and Jason Mraz - Plane
As someone said, he travels a lot and it seemed to me the songs (most of the ones I picked) are slow and heavy on the instrumental. *shrugs* No better reason.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
This one should be obvious.. His favourite song.

Nina Simone - Feeling Good
*points at title* Precisely that. I hope that he does, and will. It's an optimistic song, and it's an old classic. Can't go wrong with classics. ;)

The Steve Miller Band - The Joker
Pure fun. He's not that much of a 'joker' but he has a wicked sense of humour, and it seems to me he'd get a chuckle out of it. And again, a classic.

Sufjan Stevens - Borderline
It's a beautiful, slow song, and fills me with peace every time I hear it. And it kinda speaks about peace and home and being happy with someone you love if you'd let yourself, let them in. So, yeah.

Thirteen Senses - Into the Fire
It's an.. active song. Nervous, constantly moving, frantic in its lyrics. I have a feeling his life gets out of control sometimes; that he feels just as lost as the song implies. I might be waay off but.. *bites lip*

Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
*grins* There's this.. playfulness to to the song, and exhilaration; and Jensen sings himself (and not nearly enough) so I thought it'd be like a nudge from the fans.. :D

And now, question -- Kane and Steve Carlson and Jason Mann? You guys plan on putting something theirs on or is it too late now? I really think he'd love the reminder.. *bites lip*

I would still really absolutely love to do this - and we've got room for a bonus track or two. It's a brilliant idea. It's more an issue of tracking the actual songs down. I know y'all were looking for webhosting or something, butI couldn't feasibly hold off the voting any longer. That said, if you and [info]quiet000001 can find me a couple of songs before the deadline of the voting, I will be more than happy to tack them on as super awesome bonus track...things.

I agree on the cd booklet looking awesome.

Mostly, I picked songs that I kind of like (or have at least, you know, HEARD) that I didn't think were too "we're meant to be" because, yeah, freaky. :)

A couple I picked just because they're awesome songs, or I thought he'd get a kick out of them (God Bless Texas, Ghostbusters.)

I also want to apologize for not uploading any Kane/Steve Carlson/Jason Manns stuff. I was going to, and then Stuff Happened (as it does) and then it was too late. If you want to put one on as a 'bonus' or something, I can still help out. :) I'd probably suggest The House Rules, 'cause it's a fun song, and you can listen to it on their myspace page: http://myspace.com/kanecountry
