Hi -

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Jenna, love supernatural books, they are my obsession (well, truthfully I love most genres, but the supernatural ones have this pull to them).

So currently finishing up Stolen by Kelley Armstrong and will be picking up the next in her otherworld series today (Dime Store Magic, I think).

Anways, what are you currently reading and what do you recommend? I'm always up for suggestions!

I have a deep and abiding love of dystopian and post-apocalyptic literature and film. In the interests of developing my 2008 reading list I've begun to wade through all of the post-apocalyptic tags on Amazon, but I'm afraid that at 500+ I may be wasting valuable reading time.

Do you know of any good post-apocalyptic or dystopian novels? Frequently, the two sub-genres overlap, and that's okay with me. I've read most of the "classics"--1984, Animal Farm, Farenheit 451 and most of the "modern masterpieces"--The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake, The Road. I've also read the ones that everyone seems to suggest...mostly The Stand for some reason.

Basically, I like books about the end of the world, or just after the end of the world. My favorite two books out of the ones I've just mentioned were Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood) and The Road (Carson McCullers). It doesn't matter if it's zombies, SARS, nuclear war, earthquakes, comets, etc. I'm pretty much okay with all of it. The world doesn't have to be destroyed; it could just be a really dysfunctional society, a la William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic." And the genre (and length!) doesn't matter...while some books are staunchly Speculative Fiction (or Sci-Fi), and others resist that appellation, I don't care if it's from Tor or a YA selection! Just bring on the gloom and doom and destruction, and I'll be one happy camper (believe it or not, I'm a fairly chipper person IRL; go figure).

It might actually be better to say what I don't like. I loved the first half of The Stand, but I'm not too big on the god vs the devil stories. I'm okay with good vs. evil, but the whole divine thing just doesn't do it for me...i don't know why. Also, just say no to Left Behind.

I have a list of about fifty books so far, but any suggestions you all have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here's a list of the books that I've read recently:

Coyote Dreams by C.E. Murphy: For the most part, I really liked this book. It was much better than "Thunderbird Falls" and almost just as good as "Urban Shaman". During my four years in college, I read nothing but literature ( I have an English degree). I like literature. I just got a bit tired of it once I graduated. I don't really read literary books anymore. The books I read now are purely for enjoyment and for escapism. I expect a nice flow throughout the book and to be entertained. Two-thirds of this book accomplished this; however, one-third read just like literature. This book had pages and pages of detailed description of the main character's metaphysical experiences with lots of symbolism. I eventually got most of what the author was trying to get across with this but I did get lost and/or bored at certain points in the book. Overall, I did like the book and am looking forward to the next one.

Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs: I LOVE Patricia Briggs. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I love the whole "Pack" dynamic in this series. Mercedes Thompson is such a cool character.

Kitty Takes A Holiday by Carrie Vaughn: Knock me over with a feather! This is the 3rd book in Vaughn's "Kitty" series. After reading the 2nd book, I never would have thought the series would take such a dramatic turn and twist. Some of the events I sort of saw coming or at least made sense once I thought about it for a while. Then, there were a few things in this book that had me going, "What the ??!!!?" Even though it wasn't what I expected, I really did like this book a whole lot and I cannot wait for the next one!

For A Few Demons More by Kim Harrison: Kim Harrison keeps getting better and better with her Rachel Morgan series. I read this book in a few hours. I could not put it down! This is the best book so far in the series. Several events that I wanted to see happen did occur. I think there were only one or two that didn't happen. There was one moment in the book that had me laughing for at least five minutes non-stop. I'm loving this series just as much as I love Charlaine Harris' "Sookie Stackhouse" series.

Chick and the Dead by Casey Daniels: Daniels' first book in this series is "Don of the Dead". For those of you who aren't familiar with this series, I will give a brief summary of what it's about. Pepper Martin comes from a rich family but her family is now poor, and she makes a living as a tour guide at a cemetery. In "Don of the Dead" Pepper hits her head on one of the tombstones and she starts to see the ghost of a Mafia Don. He won't leave her alone until she figures out for him who actually killed him. It's a funny paranormal mystery series. "Chick and the Dead" was just as good as "Don of the Dead". I really like the author's style in this series. This was a quick read for me.

I have many supernatural/paranormal books on my bookshelves that I have not read yet. I will probably read Kimberly Raye's "Dead and Dateless" next. I loved "Dead End Dating". After that, I'm not really sure which out of these five books I should read next:

Blood Ties Book Two: Possession by Jennifer Armintrout
Dark Seduction by Brenda Joyce
The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson
Demon Angel by Meljean Brook

Firstly, I just want to thank those of you who responded to my previous post about "coming out" novels. The Kitty series by Carrie Vaughn has so far been the best bet. It comes into much more detail in the second novel with government counsels on "super" humans and science experiments, as well as religious zealousness. The most detailed and interesting story I've read so far on what a process for the revelation of existence of vamps might be. I've yet to read the third book, so I'm not sure if this concept continues.

I also found that Moon Called and Blood Bound to be a close second. Patricia Briggs only seems to skirt the issue; the first book is set after the faes come out, but while the weres are deciding whether or not to do the same, while the second book starts after the weres have come out. It still touches a bit on the issues, reactions and lingering fears while explaining the idea of finding a "poster-boy" to represent them.

I'd reccomend both series even if you're not looking specifically for "coming out" parties! ;) Other than that, I'm still on the quest for others and when I read them, I'll be happy to share my thoughts.

Question

This is a little off-topic, as it's not books, but does anyone know of any "supernatural" magazines? I'm looking for something that's not sci-fi that includes vamps and such, but something really dedicated to preternatural tv, books, movies, etc. Something that's current would be great.
(For the sake of full disclosure, I'd really like anything that would eventually feature news on True Blood, the HBO series based on Charlaine Harris' novels. It's still early, but it would be nice to have something to post about in

Just read the latest in Rachael Caine's Morganville Vampire series, called "The Dead Girls' Dance." It was easy, cute, and very good. Not sure that I liked it as much as the first one, but still worth the three hours reading it, not to mention the next one is coming out in October.

Also breezed through "Sleeping with the Fishes" by Mary Janice Davidson (Author of the "Undead and Unpopular." It's in her typical style, which isn't FABULOUS, but good enough if you like supernatural romance humor. Main character is particuarly cute and spunky. As always, she writes good supernatural romance without being painfully cliche.

In the middle of reading "Thief With No Shadow" by Emily Gee and while I'm still in the middle of it, it's highly addictive. The main character is a wraith, which is pretty unique, and also does a good job of staying away from the cliche while still focusing on the relationships of the characters. Hops point of views (in 3rd person) which is interesting.

"Little Gods" by Tim Pratt is also worth finding, though it may be difficult since I suspect it's an indie book. A bunch of short stories, all supernatural, that are poetic, unique, and incredibly genius. I hate short stories, but these were amazing.

And, last of all, even though it's technically a young adult book, I suggust "City of Bones" by Cassandra Clare. At first, it begins and comes off as VERY young adult, it gets better and becomes incredibly addictive (and I SO could not see the end coming....). It's about a girl who witnesses a murder, only for the body and blood to disappear, and discover that SHE'S the only one who can see the murders. Thus, she gets pulled into the supernatural world with the weird ability to see things she shouldn't. Awsome awsome book (though still only in hardback).

Check out Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead that just came out. I got an advanced copy of it a couple months of it and was totally hooked. The story follows an ancient succubus currently called Georgina who is just trying to lead her life as a bookseller and sex goddess, when men keep coming into her life and a killer is knocking off immortals. Very cute and sweet with just enough romance to make it interesting, but not so much you want to gag. I'm counting down the days until next year when the sequel comes out.

I also suggust Glass Houses by Rachael Caine, author of the Weather Warden books. I picked it up from the library and five hours later had it finished, literally couldn't put it down. The story follows college freshman Claire who makes an enemy of the school's popular kids, in particular the leader of the pack. When she narrowly escapes unharmed, she ends up living off campus with a few two boys and a girl who tell her a dangerous secret she'll need to survive the town: it's run by vampires. And she's fair game.

Title: Kissing Sin, Tempting Evil, Dangerous Games

Hi guys, I've just finished the lastest three books (phew!) of Riley Jensen Series by Keri Arthur. Major turn off would be the lack of monagamy but if you can overlook that then it can be quite a good read; action packed, good storyline and kick-ass heroine. There's a lot of sex scenes but none of the Anita-sex-feasts that were multi-chapter. Book 5, Embraced By Darkness, is schedule for July 31 this year.

I haven't been reading books for a longest time so I did a catch-up this week. My first read of the year was For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison. It's turning quite into a girlxgirl pairing but the story was still great.

Mar. 26th, 2007 @ 11:56 am "Coming Out" Novels

I've read quite a few supernatural novels and have noticed a trend: either the book is set during a time when the general population knows nothing about the things that go bump in the night, or the universe is a post-coming out one where the general population knows of one or more "species" of supernatural beings and has learned to deal with it.

My question is whether or not there are any books that are in-between, or that show the progression and reactions to the "coming out". I would prefer if it was a book about the revelation of vampires and/or werewolves existing, but certainly wouldn't mind anything about witches, faes, etc.

I'm just really curious as to how an author would choose to handle something like that; why was it revealed, how it was handled, reactions from the population, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

The Mercy Thompson books are so SATISFYING. At first I couldn't seem to get through Moon Called, but after hearing what everyone had to say, I gave it a second chance. I'm VERY glad I did.

ALSO:...

Simon R. Green is coming out with a new series called Secret Histories. It's Mr. Green's homage to the James Bond franchise if James Bond were a supernatural dude. Can't wait!

It just occured to me today to look for an LJ group for my reading preferences. I know, where have I been?

Okay, a little intro: I'm Jenn, 30, happily married, 1 3yo DD, live in the Atlanta area. :) I got into the supernatural stuff through my husband even though he doesn't read it. Confused? DH always went to Dragon*Con. When we started dating, I went too. I like to say that he brought out the inner geek in me. :-D I wasn't terribly into anything at D*C, but wanted to be, so I started watching Buffy. LOVED it. I can't remember what books I started with, but I remember picking up the first Dresden book because James Marsters did the voice for the audio version. Yeah, I'm a dork. Anyway, I LOVE them and hope that the new tv series isn't as bad as it looks. (They changed his staff to a hockey stick, for god's sake!) Anyway, I love reading Butcher, of course. I've read some Kelley Armstrong and Mary Janice Davidson. Like 'em, don't love 'em. LOVED LKH until it got so smutty. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the smut, but not in place of a plot. You all know what I mean. I love Charlaine Harris and just started reading her non-super stuff...which is also good. Got into Rosemary Laurey (LOVE her) and Sherrilyn Kenyon at last year's Dragon*Con. I like Kenyon's DH series. I just read the first BAD book and omg, she's watching too much Alias! Her main female character is even named Sydney! What? I haven't started her Kinley McGregor stuff yet, but I have the first one. I read Gilman's Staying Dead just before the holidays and was really disappointed. I like Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series up until this last one. I finally got fed up with then not resolving ANYthing and I quit. I'll probably give her vamp series a try when I get around to it. I also just finished Christopher Moore's Bloodsucking Fiends....was pretty good. I like Rice's original and new vamp series, but I've not been able to get into any of her other books. I've had Simon Green's book on my Amazon Wish List for ages, but hadn't gotten around to it. I skimmed the first couple of entries here and now it will probably be my next purchase! I love getting ideas for new authors, so I'm looking forward to reading what you all think of authors and going back and reading your old entries! Here's my reading list from last year. It's a little small. My 3yo takes up a lot of reading time! *g*

Oh, and I just started it, so there aren't a whole lot of books there yet, but here's my LibraryThing profile.

Yes, as all of you know, I'm obsessed with Simon R. Green's Nightside series. Everytime one comes out, I'm gushing all over Amazon and on here. If you haven't read any of the Nightside books:

YOU MUST!

Yes, you must. It's as simple as that. Now it's even easier to start the series because they published the first THREE books in an omnibus that can be purchased here. The newest novel in the series, "Hell to Pay", was released on the day after Christmas and I just finished it last night. You know you've just read a good book when you have a smile on your face when you close the book. Oh, I'm such a fan. You can go here to see what I had to say about it other than I'm in love with Simon R. Green.

In other news, I'm beginning to read Marjorie M. Liu's Dirk and Steele series which is proving to be quite a series. I've read both "Tiger's Eye" (good) and "Shadow Touch" (better) and now I'm on "The Red Heart of Jade". A lot more espionage than I'm used to, but Liu really knows how to use imagery and the settings in her books are always exotic and well-researched. "Shadow Touch" is lighter on the romance than "Tiger's Eye" for those of you who find it difficult to venture into the romance section. It does include guns!

During 2006, I really go into Simon Green - specifically The Dark Side, Hawk and Fisher, and Shadow Falls. I haven't picked up any Deathstalker novels yet but I definitely intend to. If you read Green, what is your favorite book/series? And what other authors have similar styles and/or themes?
