Opt out of pirate day

Title
Opt out of pirate day

Short, concise description of the idea
Ability to disable "Captain's log" and "Eyepatch" version of mini-avatar.

Full description of the idea
Much as the random graphics and updates are nice, there must be an option to opt out as some of us prefer not to be associated with AK-47 weilding thugs that murder and kidnap people nor those that intentionally defraud others by selling illegal music/software/videos.
As such the option to use the standard mini-avatar and just "Update journal" should be included.

An ordered list of benefits
  • * Disassociates Livejournal and Livejournal users from terrorists.
  • * Does not force users to partcipate in something which is morally objectionable

An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • None forseen

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation
  • An drop down or even tick box on user page for "Opt out of Talk like a pirate day" or what ever future "fun" features are developed.

I've chosen to use this day to celebrate Mr. Depp, something that nobody could possibly find morally objectionable.

TLaP day is not about celebrating barbaric pirate behavior, but about celebrating the iconic fun culture that was left behind.

Besides, this suggestion is made every time there's a new holiday "celebrated" on LJ, and every time it's rejected.

I'm pretty sure the pirates referenced are pre-AK47 and illegal downloads. Like, circa whenever Pirates of the Carribean was set. Therefore, not offensive for the reasons you cite.

And I'm not quite sure how pirates=terrorists, but if you'd care to explain your logic I'll read your comment.

And yeah, I've not been doing this Suggestions thing long, but I've seen previous proposals like this get shot down.

No one is going to think that a LiveJournal user approves of modern-day pirating just because they have an account while LJ staff decides to pull a fun day. It's a bit like saying "I don't want to be associated with promoting obesity!" should a website put a Santa Claus on their site for December, really.

It's one day, and a sense of humor helps.

(You could always change to an interface language that isn't participating, though it still leaves you with the graphics. CSS them out, then.)

Well, now that I know that only terrorists are pirates, I'll go back to reading my library, which has gotten a lot easier since I discovered I only have to look at the covers. I'll also tell my boyfriend about all the things he should have learned about sex from porn.

Since you're so set on finding it pointless, how about trying to ignore it for the 24 hours that other people may enjoy it? To be blunt, it isn't that intrusive, and since you've already been clear in your response to sofiaviolet that your objection is not because of moral objection, but because you “find this celebration of incorrect anarchic speak rather pointless”, very few people are actuall going to give your suggestion any weight.

a pirate is one who swashbuckles and stuff.

a pirate is also one who distributes copyrighted software. not necessarily for free. not necessarily for a price.

you don't want to be associated with such people? then get off of this website.

if i had money to bet (which i don't), i would bet $20 per-member of the 6A/LJ staff that they've been involved with the transmission of at least one pirated file.

i have a pretty good feeling that you'd be paying me a hefty wad of cash.

on a slightly-related note, as other users said, you could apply slight alterations to your browser to "undo" the piratization of the website.

Talk like a pirate day has absolutely nothing do to with promoting terrorism or death and violence. It's about talking funny. Saying that participating in the day by enjoying a few changes to the site means you are associated with terrorism and software piracy is like saying if you talk in German you are a Nazi. It's ridiculous.

Nobody would log onto LJ today and think 'ooh look at that eyepatch on that head icon, obviously this is a website that supports terrorists'. That's just silly. And putting in an opt-out for a feature that runs for one whole day, and a day that has already had part of it done, would also be ridiculous practically.

I think it's a shame that everyone here is ridiculing the poster's feelings on the issue instead of simply offering a logical response. I do agree with the other posters that it's just one day, and since it has already well underway (and since the changes are fairly unobtrusive), I feel it'd be fairly pointless to change it back now. (And since suggestions voted for in this community are only CONSIDERED for suggestion and even then it can take months and months to implement them... Yeah. You have a hope for next year, maybe, but I'd say you'd be better off emailing or writing LJ's staff directly.)

On the other hand, while I myself have no problem with this event (other than being annoyed at all the pirate heads and "arghs" on my friends page), I can see how someone else might be. Not everyone shares a sense of humor, and not all people necessarily discriminate between, say, the pirates of the past from the pirates of today (the two might be associated mentally if only by name). In this case, I think a very small minority would be offended, but still, the option is there. I'd say a) make some kind of public announcement about your feelings on the subject in your own journal, so as to make known your position, and b) especially if you're a paid user, email the LJ/6A team to express your displeasure. If you're a free user, I can't really see as how they'd owe it to you not to do something like this. (Not that LJ/6A is all that great at serving its customers much of the time, but still.)

Wow, I typed a lot. *cough*

Let people have their fun. Jeebus, Talk Like a Pirate Day is all about stereotypical pirates from films and games, not real pirates. It's all about the eyepatches and the parrots and the rum, not about the pillaging and the plundering.
