Suburban Jungle Anthrocon plans!
Good day all, Gneech and I will be having ONE table at Anthrocon (at this juncture table A9 along the left wall). Look for the Tiffany banner which we will put as high as possible. We will be near Bill Holbrook/Moonbase Press and Vince Suzukawa. Gneech will be doing badges, sketchbooks, and possibly another surprise as time permits. We will have the omnipresent candy dish, the usual gabfest on pretty much anything under and over the sun, and the occasional spout of giddiness. We also enjoy just "catching up" with fans so feel free to just come by and say hello. Because we have scaled back to one table, we will have a limited number of items: We are bringing the bargain basement bin. Nothing in the bin will be more than $10, with a lot of items being $5. I will also have my replica Harry Potter ($10) and Tom Baker era Dr. Who scarves ($45). They will NOT have fringe but will be washed and ready to wear for any occasion. We also bringing some black Proud to be Furry shirts ($15), some embroidered shirts $15) and all of the buttons ($1.25 each). We will also have an assortment of older prints and a few books. I did NOT pack any black LEONA or Kitten Kaboodle shirts. If you are interested in one of those or a specific apparel item, email me at kerry@surfari.net by noon Eastern Wednesday with size preference, and I'll bring it along in luggage. Thanks for listening, and safe travels to all, Kerry aka MLD Current Mood: busyCurrent Music: KGO in the far off background | | Monday, June 29th, 2009 | 7:52 am [the_gneech]

The Sketches Continue
Sorry, but 'til the job lets up and I get a bit more rest, sketches are all I can do, and even those aren't always feasible (hence the lack on Monday). Anyway, today is Star Trek sketch day! Here are my Top Ten Opinions That Go Against Conventional Wisdom About Star Trek: - Given the technology and budget, Star Trek's special effects were amazing.
- Star Trek: The Next Generation had some good moments, but ran way too long.
- Scotty was a pragmatic, "get it done" officer who loved his work, not an eccentric genius who rewired everything for the heck of it.
- The original series had the best art design, largely because Matt Jeffries was an aviation engineer and architect who designed things to work, rather than coming up with "a cool look" and then shoehorning function into it. The Enterprise-D, on the other hand, is the worst spaceship design ever, inside and out.
- The animated series had some very good stuff.
- Kirk was serious-minded and motivated by compassion, not an arrogant renegade who liked to blow shit up. (Later movies notwithstanding.)
- While the show did have its problems with rubber science, a lot of thought was given to the science and engineering behind the show. (e.g., most "sound effects" in the space battles are actually either musical cues or very abstract -- ships never explode and go 'boom' for instance)
- The recent movie was a moderately-enjoyable action flick but terrible Star Trek.
- The Enterprise and crew were dedicated and capable, but hardly superhuman. Every crew in the fleet was dedicated and capable, that's how they got into Starfleet to begin with!
- William Shatner is a better actor than people give him credit for.

Invisible Sketch Cannot Be Seen!
Too much work on the weekend; sketch will go up tonight. Still don't know when strips will start. Also, talking in sentence fragments again. Think may be losing mind. Details later. -The Gneech | | Friday, June 19th, 2009 | 7:42 am [the_gneech]

Some Fan Art
During an extended down time I did some sketching and decided to do one of my favorite SJ chars. I haven't colored her in yet, but this is my view of Leona. I hope the Gneech approves. :) ( It's a bit big. Sorry.>

Withdrawl Help Needed. ;-) I think I am starting to have SJ withdrawal. I keep going to the page hoping to see a new strip. First it was once or twice a week, since I figured Gneech was taking a break, then it was every other day, now it is daily. So far it has not gotten so bad that I am checking more than once a day. <grin>
Any suggestions to alleviate the symptoms? Current Mood: nervous | | Monday, May 11th, 2009 | 5:55 pm [huskyteer]

SJ on TV Tropes
I've added a page for Suburban Jungle to TV Tropes, here, because it deserved one. My knowledge of the strip is by no means exhaustive, so feel free to edit! Current Mood: accomplished | | Friday, May 1st, 2009 | 7:54 am [the_gneech]

Today's Strip Running Late
Still harried as all get-out; hope to have a strip up tonight. Also, talking in sentence fragments 'cause I don't have time for complete sentences. -The Gneech | | Friday, March 13th, 2009 | 7:52 pm [keross]

Hello
Hi, I'm Wyldkat. I am brand new to live Journal so I hope I'm doing this right. Are there any rules I need to know? I've been reading SJ since sometime in 2000. Managed to recruit at least one more reader. I showed my sister the site a few years ago. She likes Tiffany. Me, I like Dreezer and Dover. Just started reading NN, don't know those characters yet.
Well, I just wanted to say Hi.

Suburban Jungle on Wikifur
I would like to see The Suburban Jungle become a Featured Comic on Wikifur. Most of the other what I call "classic" furry comics, those which were among the most popular 5 years ago or more (e.g. Kevin and Kell, Sabrina Online, The Class Menagerie, Faux Pas, Newshounds), have already been featured in the past, but not The Suburban Jungle. I would like to remedy that, if possible before the comic ends its run. Since I'm an admin on Wikifur I can make it the featured comic myself, so there's no need for a campaign to get it featured. What is needed, however, is to improve the article so it's in better shape before we feature it. This could include adding more story synopsis and making it current, adding a list of key characters with some profile information about each one, and including additional references and links. Here is a link to the current article: The Suburban JungleSomething else the article could really use more of is images. Those are subject to intellectual property and fair use issues, especially when it comes to art work, but one of the easiest ways to sidestep those is for the creator of the images to upload those himself. the_gneech, can you help us out there? Types of images that would be helpful might include a banner/logo, a full cast picture, avatar/headshot images of the primary characters, and possibly some actual comic panels (although "all of the above" might be overkill). Also, I remember some time ago someone posted a pretty detailed essay discussing the setting and culture of The Suburban Jungle which I thing would be good to include as a reference or external link. Here are some examples of articles about past featured comics that are examples of what we're shooting for: If other readers in this community can help out with adding information, I can handle cleaning it up to Wikifur style guidelines and wikifying it to make it look pretty. Punting on This Week, Alas
Just a heads-up: unfortunately, between work, family, and health obligations, I'm not going to be able to get Suburban Jungle done for tomorrow or Friday. If I get the chance, I'll try to work ahead for next week. Sorry about that! -The Gneech Current Mood: rushed |
