Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood: geeky

Not that anyone cares, but Im leaving this community.
I deliberately didn't join it a while ago because I was told how prejudice the people here are toward outdoor cat owners. After a while, I thought 'fuck it, who cares, I can hold my own, and Im sure it doesn't come up all that often anyway'. After the bitch fest last night, I ws happy to let it die and move on, assuming it was a rarity. I come online this morning to find ANOTHER post trying to shove the 'dangers' of outdoor cats onto everyone, with lovely comments like 'it never fails to amaze me that people go on about how much they loooove their cat(s) but allow them to roam unchecked.'

And Im sorry but I am not going to come online every day to see bullshit like this sitting on my friend's page, and I would doubt that most people here would wish to come to a community which constantly implies they are unfit owners either. And Im not going to take the risk that it will be a common thing to crop up, because no doubt at SOME point another flame fest will start about it, Which Im sure you (and definately I) do not want.
I don't care if Im supposed to 'read between the lines' and assume that as Im in the UK, Im exempt from people's comments, because it seems to me the hatred isn't just confined to USA cat owners anyway, or if it is, that distinction isn't being made enough for my liking. So I can live without this community and this kind of ignorance from now on. Shame, because the majority of the posts here are enjoyable/interesting and were it not for this one topic, I would happy to remain. I also think many people who could be good, contributing members are scared away by this attitude, which again, is sad.
But we all KNOW the cat fued will come up again, and I can't be bothered with it. Thought I'd let everyone know why I shall not be posting here anymore, anyway :) This is not a 'screw you guys, Im going home' post or a 'pity me' post, because some of the people here rock! Its simply a matter of me not wanting to feel persecuted everytime I check my lj friend list. I just wanted to make it known why I feel the need to leave and why other people, who would probably be good contributing members, are perhaps afraid to join this community. But you will think what you will, and so will I. And since they seem to conflict, it doesn't bode well for the future for me here.
And so this post isn't a complete waste/off topic,

Someone calls up the other day looking to rehome a dog.
Fine, I ask him what kind of dog he's after.
He says 'what it is, is that I had a dog and he was stolen.......and I need to replace him. I own a furniture yard and I need a guard dog'.
me: all our dogs are pets only, and chances are you won't find anything suitable for guarding. Our dogs come from abusive or neglectful situations, or else they're just surrended family pets.
Him: 'well, thats what I was thinking. Since you have rescue dogs who have had a tough life, I thought they might have a bit more attitude'.
Me: 'um, no, most abused dogs end up more scared/timid than anything else'.
Him: but it WILL be a pet first and foremost, I just want to have it in the yard and make sure it will bark when someone aproaches. Make sure its a big dog. Do you have any rottweilers?
Me: We did have until just a week ago, but shes on hold Im afraid. We have a rottie cross lab.
Him: does it look more like a rottie or more like a lab?
Me: kinda like a lab with rottie markings
Him: thats no good. Do you have any dobermans?
Me: um....no. We have a staffy x boxer, hes big. But it says he's a friendly dog who loves people, so chances are he'll just lick any intruders to death!
him: Does he look tough?
Me: i.....I guess so
Him: he sounds good. I'll come and look at him.

Fortunately, he never got the dog in the end. But someone who had their last dog 'stolen' (which isn't exactly a common thing around here) and now wants a rescue dog to replace it because he thinks their abusive past lives would make them more sassy and game. Hoi. I'd wager he's never owned an ex-rescue dog before.

It is necessary to make a big "you guys are so mean!" post? Why not just leave?

I considered it, and if you think this is a 'waaah, you guys are mean!' post, you're wrong. I even stated it wasn't that at all, because I knew SOMEONE would say that.

I posted simply to make people aware that soemtimes, the attitude displayed could be the reason why some people are afraid to join. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that many people who could fit in well here are scared off by the attitude which is often displayed, outdoor cats being just an example of that. Hell, perhaps I wanted to make people think? Fighting a losing battle, you think?

While I do think that some people here are pretty militant and bitchy about their methods, I can't fucking stand "I'm not posting anymore" posts.

Oh well. At least you added an SPO story to balance it out.

I know, I can't usually either. And I debated it for a long time. And Im perfectly well aware that people will claim to not care that Im leaving but will still care enough to post in my thread :P But I wanted people to be aware of how the attitude could sometimes result in people being afraid to join. I enjoy this community for the most part, but I cannot abide the indoor/outdoor cat attitude I've witnessed in even the short time I've been here. Im sure Im not the only person who has felt forced to leave a community which is otherwise mostly enjoyable. Perhaps I just wanted people to be aware of this, if they aren't already.

Off you go, then. It must suck to see how people feel about cat owners who let their cats roam/learn the facts about how it's not the greatest idea to let your cat roam outdoors and stubbornly refuse to change your ways and then ID with the SPO's mentioned time and again in here. Personally, I LOVE this community.

I agree with your post and I'm glad you posted it.

I let my cat outside whenever she asked and she was always fine. All my neighbours do the same and it's one of the many benefits of not living in the US. :P

As your that SPO, I truely hope he doesn't get another dog. I guess sadly not everyone wants a pet for the right reasons.

The perhaps you should watch your speed and pay more attention when you're driving around areas where people live? Just a thought. God, why can't people keep their children locked indoors when you're out and about, its so selfish of them to put you in the position of having to kill one.

*Nods* I agree with you, too (strangely, I'm from Europe).

Sometimes, I have the feeling the hysteria just goes a tad too far. You can't, CAN'T protect your pets from all and every possible danger they might encounter, unless you keep it locked in an empty cell with soft walls 24/7 for the rest of it's life, and that's just not possible (and a good example of animal cruelty). That's a fact of life. Same goes for people. Of course there are certain things that form a risk higher than necessary, we all agree to that, but where the border of acceptable/too high lies is different. I would love people to acknowledge this simple truth and not deem everyone who doesn't live up to THEIR idea of the absolute pet ownership - a SPO.

If being a good pet owner means isolating the pets from any symptom of life, then hell yes, I am a SPO.

I can understand why you're leaving the community. I actually live in the US, and our cats are allowed outside. We live on a very quiet street, and the kitties love running around the yard, climbing trees, and sunbathing on the garage roof. They're fixed, still have all their claws (funny how clawing up stuff indoors isn't much of a problem when the cats have trees to scratch), and we get them inside every night. Our cats have been doing this for almost their entire lives (they were kept inside until after they were fixed, at about 6 months).

When I move out this summer, my cat will be coming with me. At that point, she will have to become an indoor cat, since I'm planning to live in an apartment for at least a year. After that, if I can get a house out in the country with a lot of land around it, she may be able to go outside again.

I tend to ignore the people who go 'OMG! You let a cat go outside! You're a horrible, horrible pet owner!' I'm sorry you'll be leaving the community just because of them.

I know. I wish I could ignore them, I admire people who can. And I did try. But I just know that one day, when Im in a bad mood, someone is just going to post something which breaks my patience barrier and this whole atupid debate will happen again.

I do find it interesting though, that all these supposed dangers and risks are being hurled by people who do not have outdoor cats themselves and probably never have, whereas the people who DO are saying 'wait, thats never happened!' Speaks volumes.

Where i live, outdoor cats get put on grills alive, disembowelled while alive, and have firecrackers shoved up their anus, lit, and left for dead. People race cars through our parking lot and hit and total parked cars.

There is a reason my cats stay inside. Please forgive me for being objective and wanting my cats to not suffer.

It must be nice to live in a place where your cats can roam outside freely; I have ferals that I would never let out regardless, for I would never see them again. Here, they play with (fake) mice, get food and water whenever they like, and only get touched if they want to.

Feel free to keep the door swinging. Good luck in life.

I live in Australia and I have to agree with the OP. Here, it's almost perfectly safe to let our cats roam free during the day, although we bring them in at night. I can't imagine trying to keep any of our four, perfectly heathy, happy cats (all aged between 2 and 16) inside all day. They would go mad, most of all our oldest two who are 15 and 16 and have been indoor/outdoor cats their entire lives.

I feel sorry for those of you in the US who have to be so afraid of those around you that you can't feel safe leting your pets out, but for god and pity's sake, can you accept that not everywhere is like the USA and stop raming your opinions down our throats?

I didn't read all the comments cause I thought there would be the usual "hey just leave then" or things like that. And I was right :D ...

I haven't read the community yesterday, so I'm sure I missed the drama.

Hmm. I think I must be an SPO then. Because, see, my cat Choco (see own journal for link to pics, if you like) has just been neutered and chipped due to an anethesia that allowed me to make the vet perform the basic operations. But why was the initial anethesia necessary ? Choco was bitten by another cat, apparently, and had a small hole in his left jaw. Because he'd need to sleep during the operation, the vet told me we could do the other stuff, to which I agreed gladly. It cost 232 Euros in the end (my bank account ins't happy now :D ) but it was worth it.

Other than that, my Choco is a "mixed" cat. Indoors, outdoors, as he feels like. He usually spends the night outside, and goes for a "walk" during the day, but spends the day home, being cuddled by my family, as well as doing the usual ("Mommy, lemme sleep, duh" or "Mommy, I'm CLEANING myself!" ... sometimes I feel he says that when he looks at me :P ) .

Weirdest thing is that he looks left and right before crossing the road (I've witnessed that once while leaving the flat with Mom) . Heh. I'm taking him to the vet regularly (I have to take him to get his claws "trimmed" if that's the correct word. Declawing is forbidden here I guess, and I don't want that anyway, yuck... but his nails are getting dirty and I don't want to hurt him trying to clean them myself) .

I don't really think I'm an SPO on that one. My cat is loved, fed, and taken care of. And he knows we love him, he always comes back and show us.

The kicker ? I live in a medium city which you can't call country at all. I'm, what, 20 minutes away from Paris at most... yet my cat has suffered no more than scratches and the one serious bite so far, and I've had him for a year already. When I get my own place (a house, I hope) he will still be let outside.

Cause, there's one advantage in this: he doesn't use his litter and hates it. Since it makes me sick too, we both gain something out of him being out :P

yup i have to agree with you too. i've really been considering elaving before because it seems that some members just search craigslist for something to bitch about (and its always the same thing) and then this whole thing about cats. disussing it i can handles. its the members who get that holier-then-thou attitude about it as if they are god and what they say is right so EVERYONE must do it.

I find this HILLARIOUS. ::round of applause::

Every time some one posts "well then leave already" the OP has to always reply with " I have already explained why I'm leaving", but yet doesn't leave... Oh and then still replies to the other replies with the reasons why they are leaving even though that it is posted in the originaly post, but still they stay to argue...

Dragging out this post and replys, void the intention of the post because the said poster who wants to leaves is still here replying... and not doing what they intend to do and just leave.

Curious.... Just curious...

I like to talk in circles, it is fun... I like gold fish because they are so delicious, Got Go Fishen'

Agreed 110%. That's why I can't stand "OMGIMLEAVING!!1111!!!" posts--usually they're nothing more than a thinly veiled cry for attention. If a person is really and truly fed up with a community, they'll just leave. Some people just like to create drama. :)

thanks sicpuppy, ive decided to leave too.

Ive read your rant and i agree with you. I stopped posting a long time ago due to extremist views and then stopped comeing here as often due to the harsh comments.

this is stupid pet owners, not omgyourtheworstpetownerevariwillkillyouthousandtimes

we are supposed to come together and rant together. Not come here and rant against anyone who is not as radical as the most radical of all.

thank you again sicpuppy for helping me to make up my mind as well.

Rule number 10 of this community: "10. There are many topics that are discussed here which the majority of people consider stupid antics. If you happen to disagree, we ask that you refrain from causing a flame war because of this. If you desire to state your differing opinion, feel free to, but if you cause a flame war, you'll be banned. Some possible examples of these topics are: declawing, tail docking, ear cropping, outdoor cats, raw feeding. "

ahahaha... sorry, not trying to be mean but I am thinking that all this arguing almost qualifies as a flame war. I don't agree with everything here either, it's a lot like parenting... it's hard to draw lines sometimes between good and bad, but if after you've stated your opinion and you know everyone is just going to keep arguing, why bother?

hey! it was me the OP quoted *snerks* at least I was accurately quoted, though I see they still didn't understand what was said.

I have cats that go outside, the back door is frequently left open for them. however, they are always supervised within a fenced yard while they are out. I distinctly remember saying "unchecked"...

if you, sicpuppy, feel so personally persecuted by my post referring to a whole other community member, then I suggest you go see a counselor.

I'm sorry the internet gave you boo-boo feelings.

Personally, sometimes there are topics on here that I don't necessarily agree with. I just choose to not comment on em. *shrug* But that's just me. *g* :)

I never will understand why people just have this mindset about 'scary lookin' dogs'. I mean I understand that they have the mindset but I don't see why it continues in today's society where we are smarter now. Bah. Most dobies/rotties I know aren't scary in the least . . .

*shrug* personally, I don't understand why this indoor/outdoor cat nonsense has to be such a black and white issue. Really, I cannot think of many things that have to be a black and white issue. There's so much gray in this particular problem that don't even bother with it. My cat was a feral, she also came from a horder and never saw the outside. thusly, she'safraid of it...so I don't let her out. I know people who own working barn cats and I don't see a problem with that. but yeah.
