If you can't afford the vet....
Dear Aisha,

I know you are in heat, and that it makes you very desperate. But really, cross species mating won't work, especially when you are attempting said mating with a sexually immature member of another species. More specifically, my toddler. I really don't want his first sexual experience to be with a feline. Now, please, stop backing up into him, and don't complain when he pulls your tail and I then hurl you out of the room for biting or scratching him. It should be obvious what the outcome is going to be after the first couple of times. Also, the toilet, cardboard boxes, kitchen chairs, my shoes and the big male human's feet fail as potential mating partners. Just an FYI.

Shaking my head,
The big female human

So why doesn't she get Aisha spayed?

We're waiting for the budget to work out in our favor. We're expecting a baby in June, and it has cramped our budget a tad. We are working on it! Plus, everytime I think it is workable, she goes into heat and I have to put it off. I am a bad kitty parent *is sad*

No shit, honey.

Some vets won't spay animals when they're in heat. On the other hand, some vets laugh at the thought of this. I guess it's really up to whoever is doing the cutting though.

It could be worse. She could be declawing her...or worse, having her put down for biting and scratching the kid.

Hopefully, she'll use those cheap-spay links.

i can't believe someone said "don't worry about getting her spayed... worry about your own issues right now". urgh. yeah, you can put off speutering sometimes, but if she's having issues right now with the cat and a toddler, she's better off doing it sooner rather than later!

I said that. She IS going to get the cat fixed, they're tight on money. I told her to look into low cost spay neuter, and perhaps have a friend take the kitty to be fixed, she'll have less time after she 'pops' out the kid.

There's an expression.. you get more flies with honey than vinegar. Obviously, that's not your style, I'm sure a lot of people listen to your 'holier than thou' speeches *rolls eyes*

scuze me?? i'm not holier than thou ok? i put off getting my cat neutered because of the money issue. but i knew damn well that there was no way he could get out.

this woman has already expressed concern about the cat... the cat and toddler seem to be having run ins and it's because the cat isn't spayed! the fact that she's said she "hurls" the cat out of the room for biting and scratching... that's not an appropriate way of dealing with it! my cat bites me occasionally... he gets yelled at, but that would be the day i would throw or hit him for it.

and i just looked at it again... no, you didn't say "wait". i was commenting specifically on this comment:

"Your cat can wait, because as soon as you have the money, even if it's in a few years, I know you will do it. You're a great mom!"

there's putting off for a few months, but a few *years*? that cat will not be in good shape in a few years. at best, she'll be stressed out from being in heat on a regular basis, at worst, she'll have produced kittens or developed a disease because of not being fixed.

as for your honey comment, i do try to guide people with nice comments when i think they're trying to do right. maybe the featured person is tryign to do what's best. i felt the need to snark at the comment, which is precisely what i did.

In most snark communities, defending yourself makes you look immature and stupid. Like it's OK to snark others, but OMG NOT MEEEEEEEE I'm UNSNARKABLE!!!!
*rolls eyes*

It's a snark community, and waiting a few years is snarkable.

In case you haven't noticed, communities like this are FOR ranting and raving about a certain topic. Thus, so-called 'mean' or 'holier than thou' attitudes are the NORM. It's what the place is MEANT FOR.

The spaying idiocy aside, this scenario reeked of idiot:
Now, please, stop backing up into him, and don't complain when he pulls your tail and I then hurl you out of the room for biting or scratching him. It should be obvious what the outcome is going to be after the first couple of times. Maybe for the toddler. Even if they can possibly manage to get the cat spayed, this is still going to be a problem until she teaches the toddler to respect the cat or watches them both better. Poor cat, soon going to have another toddler harassing her and her getting punished for it. >.

LOL

I had one of those moments today as well. I was at the pharmacy drive through and the kid in the spot next to me was asked for his birthdate and I heard him say "2-2-91" and I almost choked. I graduated HS in 93. I'm almost old enough to be his mom! That was a scary thought.

If she doesn't have money to have her cat fixed, why is she having another child? I'm sorry, this comment is severely judgemental - after all, I don't know her exact situation or anything.

But a spay is not nearly as expensive as a child.

It is easier to accidentally get pregnant than it is to accidentally get a cat spayed.

I thought the same. If she cannot pay 50 dollars or less (if you look around) for a spay, how in the hell is she going to afford two children? Or if one of the pets gets sick...

Although I don't know if it was a serious question, the answer is probably that she'll make the child/ren a priority, whereas cat spays are morally negotiable to her. We live in a culture where, at least in theory, children MUST be thought of as more important than animals (or adult humans, for that matter.) Additionally, animals are often thought of as disposable, or less important than even the most frivolous human-related purchase.

In short, you get a situation where people will literally let a cat die of neglect while they're buying their children the best of everything and they just got a new home entertainment system. That's about where pets stand.

I'd normally play devil's advocate on this one because my son is guilty of getting a little over zealous with our cat and pulling his ears or tail on occasion. He's not quite 10-months-old and has barely any motor skills, and sometimes the cat comes and rubs all over him while I'm in the bathroom or feeding the birds which means I can't be there RIGHT THEN. Sometimes the cat will issue a warning bite. That is completely my fault for not watching closely enough and choosing between my baby coming in the bird room with me (which is NOT baby proofed at all) and possibly getting his fingers bitten off or choking on a pellet, or staying where the cat is. I pick the cat since he's really good with kids. Even when he issues a warning bite, I'd never throw him across the room though.

Furthermore, being pregnant isn't an excuse to not spay your cat. You can get a low cost spay for about $50 some places. Also, people that have toddlers usually haven't gotten rid of their baby stuff. All of the higher priced items (like a crib) are usually still around. The only things that most people end up replacing are stained things and/or gender specific items, which can include clothing. If the gender is the same, even less to do! She can probably get enough brand new clothes for 0-3M for about $100. So, I call bullshit on the baby expense as a money excuse.
