So this is "TMI"? More like "SPO"!
Stupid pet owner on the TMI_chix board. Why couldn't she just make a vet appointment in the morning as opposed to slicing open her cat's abcess? I can't imagine how much pain the poor kitty was in...

What a fucking retard! Its bad enough not take your cat to the vet and to lance something without even a local anestectic but then she doesn't clean it out and just goes to bed?!?!?!

I would have atleast cleaned the wound, applied antibiotic cream and watched him for a few hours.

GAH!!!

My recollection is that you have to apply antibiotic ointment to the area regularly. If you don't get the infection out, it will just fill up again.

Abcesses, bleah! Between the mess, the need to know how to handle the cat and do the lancing without inflicting extra pain, and the probable need for antibiotics (either oral or topical), I can't imagine doing that myself.

I've actually done the whole "drain it yourself" thing to my cats before, and I'll tell you why.

The abcess itself is numb. I've heard this from two vets, and there is a chance they could be wrong, but I have yet to see a cat scream in pain or try killing me for draining these things, so I'll side with them. And I also have yet to have a cat get more infected after I lance on my own.

I do it like this: drain, hydrogen peroxide, then monitor. It's how I've always done it, never had any problems whatsoever.

I've had enough rats with abscesses that I've drained myself (upon vet's suggestion) that I will have to agree with you.

It's stupid that she didn't clean it out, but I really don't see anything wrong with the fact that she lanced it in the first place.

My vet's the "I know you're smart, I've showed you how to do this once, call and check with me, and if you remember how I did it, and can imitate it, go ahead" sort. So I've lanced abcesses myself.

Of course, monitoring the site and draining the abcess completely are really important, as well as disinfecting. My vet reccommends triple antibiotic ointment (generic Neosporin without the extras) on top of the lance puncture.

you might get some icthammol ointment- it works very well to pull infection out of wounds. Its common name, in fact, is "drawing salve." I use it on abcesses on critters and people. Its great for healing wounds in circulation-poor areas.

The fact that she lets the cat out when she knows that he's going to get into fights is the most SPOish part about this, IMO.

Lancing the abscess herself? Probably not the best thing to do, but better than ignoring it if she couldn't afford the vet.

Maybe I'm just jaded, though... I drain our beardie's abscesses myself on a fairly regular basis. Eventually he always has to go back to the vet's (the vet is better at it than I am, obviously), but I can't see taking the critter to the vet every couple days when I can do the same thing myself at home.

Obviously lizards are not cats, and most veterinary procedures shouldn't be attempted at home, but still... I don't think this girl is all that awful.

that was what I thought too... she could avoid this and other injuries to the cat I'm sure, if she didn't allow him to get into fights in the first place.

I dunno, her comments says that she has experience lancing and will take the cat to the vet's; just that she had done that before, as she was a veterainary technician, so knew what to do.

As someone mentioned above, I think one of the most SPO parts is that she's a vet tech, the cat has a history of fighting and coming home with wounds, and yet she still lets him outside.

If you really want to let your cat outside, and he keeps coming home beat to all hell, maybe he should stay inside?

Just FYI, running in and announcing that you saw her over at SPO isn't the best idea in the world. She's now followed me to my journal from reading here. The rule in the community info is in place for a reason. :\

She knew what she was doing. I see nothing wrong with a trained vet tech performing at home the very same procedure that her colleague would perform at a vet hospital. Also, the cat was not subjected to the stress of travelling, nor the risk of disease that could occur at a veterinarian's.

A real SPO story would involve someone letting an abscess fester on their cat for a few months. This is just...not.

FYI, it looks like everyone else let you have it.

Look! I'm a vet tech! Now that makes every at-home medical procedure I might do perfectly okay!
