| Where is the line drawn between SPO and other countries's customs? |
[05 Jul 2009|02:05am] |
I was thinking about this the other day.
I spent a few weeks in Costa Rica volunteering awhile back. For the first week there, I was in the most quaint little town. At first I was shocked to see dogs, both big and small, wandering the streets with no collars on and with little regard for humans or cars. However, I soon learned that this is quite common in Costa Rica (at least in the small towns where really, there is one road and few cars anyways).
So I was even more shocked to see how my host family treated their dog Scrappy. Scrappy was this beautiful purebred Shetland Sheepdog. He was obviously starved for attention. He was kept on a chain-maybe 10 feet long, if that-day and night. The four kids didn't seem to be that interested in their beautiful, lovely dog. On one of the last days I was there, I actually got two of the boys to take Scrappy off his chain. He ran back and forth between the two boys, who kicked around a soccer ball, and retrieved it when it went into the trees. He was thrilled, and the boys seemed to really enjoy playing with him.
So I was just wondering for some of you who may have experienced or seen other cultures' manner of treating their pets, and what you witnessed and what you thought about it. Are their things that "we" (Americans, Brits, "westerners") do that you know other cultures might consider SPO behavior?
Just some food for thought/discussion.
And a completely unrelated minor stupid: Recently around here we had Strawberry Fest, a busy outdoor festival with tons of people, kids, and dogs. We took our pup there for a few hours. As he approached another dog, and one about his size, the owner snapped at us, "Don't let your dog by mine! It's a baby!"
Smart, lady. Take your new pup to a place with lots of dogs. Don't let it play with others. No socialization is the answer. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. =/

I always had a lot of respect for groomers.
Now, I have a whole lot more:
After a week of blistering indoor temperatures--thanks to picture windows and 7-10 hours of direct sunlight (and no, drawing the curtains doesn't help)--I decided to give Shadow a lamb cut. With scissors. Over something like 15-20 micro-sessions of 5-10 minutes over the course of the entire afternoon. Thank God for gentle, forgiving cats :-) (She's already started to come around again)
No pics, because it looks really horrible--lumpy, asymmetric. It wasn't that I didn't know what I wanted to do, it was that she was not restrained at all. Miracle of miracle, we both made it unscathed.
But yes, next year, we take her to the groomer's. Or I get a groomer's buzzer.

| Only bad dogs eat people food left on the floor |
[04 Jul 2009|12:02am] |
The post below mine reminded me of some serious SPO behavior from my old roomate, who claimed to know everything about dogs and be an expert dog handler (LOL, one of his many gems of wisdoms was "if you can't housebreak a dog in a week they are now an outside dog!).
He used to leave these plates of rancid, old food on the floor or on the very low coffee table. I'm talking plates of nuggets and ranch dressing, pizza crusts, whatever. He basically laid on the couch 24/7 and the food kind of just formed a semi-circle around it.
Of course, when not being directly supervised, my dog would eat the shit of all that food. It pissed me off because it always made her sick and he would bitch about how he was going to "eat that later." His statement to me~
"Only bad dogs will eat people food that's left out. She needs a beating and she'll never do it again. No dog my family ever had would dare touch people food! Even if it was on the floor!"
I call bullshit, even a well trained dog will eat tasty food left on the FUCKING FLOOR, she wasn't climbing onto the counter tops to eat it. I don't know many dogs that will pass up half a pizza that's on the groud next to their food bowl.
He did it until the end of our days living together, I just started chucking any and all improperly stored food in the trash. If that shit was so rancid it was making my dog sick he really didn't need to be eating it anyway imo....

*sigh*
My bil, is a SPO.
He has a fluffy beagle/pitbull mix that he swears mother was a full blooded fluffy beagle and a full blooded pitbull... o_O
Anywho...
We took our new addition to my mil's house to get her used to car rides and hanging out at other places..blah blah blah...socialization and all that shizz.
When we get there, my bil has his dog there. As soon as he sees Daisy, he tells me to keep her away from his dog because it won't be his fault if his dog kills her because most dogs, if not all dogs, automatically hate other dogs and cats and will attack them.
Again I make my o_O face.
I tell him his dog wouldn't be so bad if he'd actually train the poor thing. He tells me that my other dog, Weezer, will attack Daisy and he doesn't see why we got another dog. Funny...she's been around Weezer for awhile now and he absolutely loves her.
I also ask him if his dog will attack cats, why the hell does he have him at my mil's house because she has outdoor strays that she's been trying to capture. Again he says it isn't his fault if his dog kills the cats.
He tells me that I know nothing about dogs and that's just how they all are.
At first they make fun of the new puppy, but after awhile he asks me when I'm going to breed her.. Uh..no? As soon as she's old enough, she's getting spayed. His response? Well that's stupid.
*headdesk*
I'm sorry that I like taking the dogs places with us. Part of the reason why my mil is fencing in her back yard is so Weezer (and now Daisy) can come over when we do. She absolutely dreads when Adam brings Cyclone over. He's not house broken, aggressive towards the other animals, and rough with the kids.
His dog is the total opposite of my dogs (and quite frankly any dog I've encountered), yet I'm the one that doesn't know anything about them?

Was it here where we talked about the dog wash? The automatic dog washing machine? Well I saw it in action today for the first time. Whenever I go to the pet store that has it, no one is using it. Well I was drawn to it by the screams and howls of some type of hound dog. Colorings of a tri color beagle but bigger. The dog was freaking out. Scratching at the glass. Crying. Frantically trying to get out.

And someone found a video from this actual store posted by some great dane owners. How did they even get him/her in it? A little cooking oil around the waist maybe?

"Hello, We are looking to find a nice dog that is good with kids. As we are 1,2 & 5. Mom says no hyper dogs we are hyper enough she wants a porch dog that likes to lay around. We would love to have a beagle again as ours has passed on but are really looking for anything at the moment. An older dog would be ideal just not one that is sick or about to kick the bucket. I dont wana be potty training. Okay with a dog that likes to play just cant want to play all the time. Would like a bed dog that likes to sleep with the kids or adults. some dogs that have been considering are coker spaniel yorkie somewhat s,aller dogs but if is bigger and fits the wants of our family will consider we have a nice yard for the dog to run and a decent size home that we own so wont be moving or have any reason to get rid of the dog. Please let us know if you think you have the right dog for us. Pictures would be great thanks "
I sent her an e-mail with a link to an eBay search result for "stuffed dog". Told her she could find any number of perfect dogs that would fit her specifications perfectly and were guaranteed to never die or have an accident indoors.
I got a reply of, "Our mom says FUCK YOU!!!!!"
I did, indeed, laugh.

| But we live in a trailer! |
[01 Jul 2009|06:00pm] |
( This one is long )
Bonus story (the reason I thought of this today).
Two weeks ago, she e-mails me asking about bunnies. I know nothing about bunnies. Turns out her cats brought her 3 baby wild bunnies and she decided to keep them as pets. (Apparently you can have cats and bunnies in a trailer, but not cats and babies). She didn't know how to care for them. After my head exploded, I told her to let them go and keep the cats inside for a few weeks. "But I want themmmmmmmm" she whined. After one died (I got a little testy with her at this point and told her this was not her smartest decision), my husband convinced her husband to let the bunnies go and keep the cats in. At this point I really wanted to strangle her.
Then yesterday, she makes an announcement. She's pregnant again. The girl who couldn't keep the cats and a baby in her trailerrrrr wanted to keep wild animals while she was pregnant. And managed to kill one. And is reproducing.
TL;DR: Idiot and husband have indoor/outdoor cats, want to get rid of cats because "you can't have a cat and a baby in a trailerrrrrr", gets mad at humane society surrender fees, tries to keep wild animals, and kills them. If I ever go to prison, you all know why.

| Stupid pet owners AND stupid parents |
[01 Jul 2009|03:31pm] |
From: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31684161/ns/us_news-life/
( python kills 2 year old girl in Florida )
tl;dr: "NBC affiliate WESH reported that Darnell told deputies he left the snake in an aquarium in a bag when the family went to sleep." Idiot finds snake out of the bag, on the 2 year old, stabs said snake to get it off her but the kid is still dead. The article doesn't say if the aquarium had a top on it, though I'm assuming if he had a "12-foot" snake stuffed into a bag sitting in an aquarium overnight (one for which he apparently had no permit), it wasn't otherwise contained (correct me if I'm wrong herpers, but that doesn't sound like a great way to house a snake). In a house with a 2 year old, which is a small, prey-like creature to a large preditory animal, if you ask me.
Bonus mention at end of article of feral populations of introduced snakes in Florida as a result of SPOs dumping their unwanted pets in wilderness areas along with some Burmese Pythons that purportedly escaped from a pet shop after hurricane damage.
Oh Florida, you never fail to provide an unending supply of epic fail.

| What happened to Yogi the Akita? |
[01 Jul 2009|11:53am] |
Recently our local shelter got in a lovely purebred 6yo Akita they named Yogi. Because they are a high kill shelter (the dogs have 5-7 days to be claimed/adopted before they are killed) they called the no-kill rescue of which I am on the Board of Directors.
Yogi is micro-chipped but the chip is not registered to anyone and they believe he was used as a breeding dog. He also appears to have had some trauma to his tongue and teeth. From what it looks like, his tongue was burned and his teeth appear to have been filed down with his bigger fangs completely removed.
The people who took him in say that he won't drink regular temperature water and has to have ice water, and obviously he can't chew kibble without his teeth so they are giving him canned food.
So what do you think happened to him before he was rescued? Any tips on how to make his life more comfortable?
Some pictures of Yogi for reference (and to see how handsome he is): ( Read more... )
The people who took him in are very experienced with and very fond of Akitas, so if things work out with their other dogs they will most likely be keeping him. :)

| Curious with some suck |
[30 Jun 2009|09:19am] |
Good morning SPO. I come with a suck and a few questions about a topic that has been brought to my attention. First the stupid or the suck, whichever you put it.
My parents live in a nice small town neighborhood. The neighbors aren't all friends but we know most of the people around us and played as children. Their house is on a corner lot so they have a house next to them and a house behind them. The house behind them has a nice size lot with a big backyard. The owners are rarely around and for a long time we thought the house was abandoned. About 4 years ago the gentleman that lives there purchased a dog, a schnauzer I believe but I'm not really sure as I've never asked him. The dog was a male and was never fixed (I can see his balls from my back porch) and was left in the back yard all the time.
There is a doggie dog but the big thing spends most of its time in the backyard barking at the back of my parents house. 2 years ago he purchased a companion for that dog. She's an a fixed female, well now she is. She wasn't at first and had a littler of puppies. The owners sectioned off part of the back yard into two narrow runs (using a fraction of the back yard and of course right next to our fence), seperating the dogs with chicken fencing (I think) because they would fight. Te two dogs spend most of the day in the backyard barking. You can't move or make a sound in my parents backyard without the dogs barking and then not stopping. When he is home, the owner will bang on the window for them to stop and they do, for about 10 minutes. That's when he's home. Almost every weekend he seems to go away and leaves his dogs home alone, they have a doggie door to get into the house and I assume food as someone comes by once a day, I assume to feed them and the dogs look to weight the same all the time.
My mother has done a lot to keep the dogs from barking since their owner never responds to notes or phone calls asking him to do something. She's planted 8 foot tall bushes, installed privacy glass or used window film on any window facing the backyard. She used to limit her time in the backyard, though now I can tell she's stopped "playing nice". She called animal contorl last weekend to complain after we spend 6 hours in the back yard helping her get ready for the 4th and the dogs did not stop barking. She feels awful about doing that, especially since her dog will bark at people who walk by the fence (we've been working on it and their Sheltie has made massive improvements in that area) and I've told her that she shouldn't feel bad. She is trying to resolve and work on her problems while he just ignores it. What would you do SPO?
Also. I have Guinea Pigs. I never had small animals as a child (as we had mouser cats in the house)and now that I have my own place (that's not a dorm room or a semester only apartment) I got a pair of boys. I've done a lot of research on them and found most respected websites do not want you to fix your GP. I, as a person who has always had fixed pets, to be strange and surprising. I understand the reason for not fixing them but I'm curious as to what other animals/pets its a bad idea to fix. (for GP's the risk of death from anesthesia is very high, they cannot take some antibiotics, ect)

| SPOs/Stupid Parenting |
[29 Jun 2009|10:07pm] |
Local news story is making the rounds. I heard about it yesterday before it hit the news..naturally the story they gave police and reporters isn't how it went down.
My brother in law has a that buddy has (or I guess I should say had) a 3 year old son and 2 eight/nine month old pitbull mix pups and 1 collie mix pup.
Saturday night, parents said they put the kid to bed. Parents said 30 minutes after putting the kid to bed, they checked on him but noticed that he wasn't there and his window was open.
Apparently the kid opened his unlocked window, climbed out, and went to play with the dogs. Pups are too much for the kid, end up hitting him to hard, breaking his neck. They then proceeded to drag him around and leave puncture marks everywhere. Unfortunately the boy didn't survive. Dogs have been taken to the local animal control.
The parents involved are junkies. News story said the kid pushed the screen out of the window. The house has NO screens whatsoever on any windows. Instead of being in their kennels/pens/whathaveyou, the dogs were left to run.
Parents don't seem upset at all. They played the 911 call on the news and it just makes me sick how effin calm the mom was during the call. I don't know if they are in shock or just back to their bad habits already. *sigh*
Naturally the news is focusing on the fact that 2 of the dogs are pit mixes. They are totally leaving the collie mix out of the tv news (the paper did mention that dog). BIL says those dogs weren't vicious, just rambunctious, untrained pups. He played with the dogs on many occasions, for several hours at a time.
Erg.
And...
I was over at my friends' house earlier and her sister showed up with her female chihuahua. Mimi is not spayed. My friends have a beagle that is not neutered (he goes next week or the week after..I know its in July..but still.) She mentions how she wants to breed Mimi with another chihuahua, but only if he's white like Mimi. The friend that she brought with her said she wanted to breed her dog with another dog, but only if he's white too.
*headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*
It doesn't help the fact that a few weeks ago another friend made a joke about breeding their corgi to the friend's beagle before they get her spayed (his wife and I threatened to kick him in the balls..so now the corgi is getting spayed on July 14. :D) and make borgies or ceagles.

Dear Comfest,
You are amazing and awesome and so much fun, however to the many pet owners that brought their dogs....
-Please do not bring your intact dogs (I saw this mostly with bullies for some reason) to comfest, I know it's giant pot smoking hippy fun tiems. But no one wants a random puppy littler. Stop bring intact males and unspayed bitches plz.
-Don't bring dogs with social anxiety or people fear to comfest I saw your dog snap at somone. I don't care if he has a muzzle don't stress the dog out be being overloaded with other people and dogs.
-Don't use your spider morph, ball python as jewery, he's probably stressed too.
-Please don't bring puppies younger that 8 weeks to comfest, I don't know if it has all of it's shots. I don't want your precious baby puppy to die of distemper or parvo.
-People with doggy water (Including my Druid grove) change it.
-People don't shove the dog in my face,
Anyway I love comfest I love meeting wonderful dogs

Dear young man walking a (beautiful) brindled, "muzzled" (it had...something around its jaws to keep them shut, but it wasn't a proper muzzle), clearly unspeutered pit bull down the block where I was helping my grandmother carry groceries yesterday,
You suck and probably only bought the dog to look cool. He deserves better than that.
No love, Me.
P.S: And I LOVE pit bulls, so that really hurt to see.
Dear family a few blocks away from me who lets ther twelve-ish son walk their large, hyperactively friendly white pit bull,
Please stop it. Yes, the dog is adorable. (off topic: I wish I had pictures. The dog really is cute.) Yes, your kid is adorable. But a kid that young shouldn't be given the leash to a big dog with that much energy, friendly or not. I can see the dog wants to play, but if, say, the dog sees a pigeon and yanks the leash out of the kid's hands to chase it and Joe Pedestrian sees OMG RAMPAGING PIT BULL and panics...well. To say the least, it wouldn't be good for the dog. Not to mention it could get hit by a car, get lost...It would just be bad.
tl;dr Train your dog to listen to the kid, if you really need the kid to walk it. Me

My husband is currently in the military and has to go to formations twice a day. Before and sometimes after these little get togethers he will chat with guys from his squad/unit/platoon, and other soldiers in the same battalion (a battalion for wounded soldiers). So, today one of the other soldiers asked if he wanted a rott puppy since he knows we like big dogs. My husband of course said no, for a couple of reasons.
1. Rotts, and rott mixes are not allowed on the base. 2. This guy has who knows how many dogs and as far as we know NONE of them are fixed.
There are 16 puppies between 2 litters this guy is trying to get rid of and from my husband knows about the guy it is unlikely he is just going to give them away. Also, they are not even full blooded rotts, they're mixes. My husband did ask if he plans to get the females fixed once the pups are old enough/gone and he said no. Unfortunately I doubt there is much we can do since we don't know where the guy lives, or if the local AC can or would do anything. I also don't know if there is any abuse going on, but the fact he is refusing to get any of his dogs fixed seems pretty SPO.

| I'm starting to think my sister is the #1 SPO in the house... |
[29 Jun 2009|05:06pm] |
God I am SO fucking pissed off at her right now. She took our dog, Piper for a walk this morning. (She and my dad are the only ones who can because Gasp! She was never properly trained as a puppy. And my sister never kept up with her training.)
Usually Piper is hyper and happy to meet people. This morning my sister said, for no apparent reason she freaked out on a woman during their walk, growling, and snarling. So instead of doing the smart thing, either:
a) Bringing her home (A thunder storm started a short time latter, and Piper is bad with storms that MAY have been the issue) or b) Keeping her ON leash and finishing the walk, she goes route c.
Takes her to the park and lets her run around OFF LEASH. This is a dog who has POOR recall and command obedience off leash at BEST. Quite often she ignores ALL commands when offside off leash. She is SO fucking lucky that Piper didn't bite anyone, or get into a fight.
Of course yelling at her is pointless because Piper is 'her' dog and she can do whatever she wants with her. This also goes for the cat (Who she rarely feeds, never brushes, changes his box or ANYTHING) and the hamster (Same as the cat).
Even better Piper was gotten THREE YEARS before she went to university, so you know how often she was around then. She never pays anything towards these animal's upkeep either.

| Judge Judy against Pit Bulls |
[29 Jun 2009|04:40pm] |
I don't know how many of you have seen this episode of Judge Judy, but I am getting so mad watching this episode.
Part 2
Statements like, "Why would you choose this breed of dog," and her own "knowledge" of the breed are making my blood boil ("jaw locking" has been unproven, right?) The Plaintiff even admits to squirting the dog with the hose to "make him stop barking" and even says the dog is afraid of water, and then the dog gets loose and goes after the step-dad who is holding the hose.
AND HE'S BRED THE DOG AND SOLD THE PUPPIES!
"Do you understand the difference between this breed of dog and other breeds of dogs because of the way their jaws are built." A Rottweiler's jaws are stronger than a pit's.
I'm not mad at her for coming down on the plaintiffs for being SPO's - GOOD! I'm mad at her misrepresentation of the breed.
OOOOH I'm gonna go write an angry letter. I have to go get my facts together.

Offer: 4 month old Female 1/2 Lab 1/2 Retriever
I would love for some one that has a fenced in back yard to have Molly, so she can run and play! She is caught up on all of her shots, although she will need her second rabies shot here within the next month. I do have pics if interested. Let me know.
first off, isn't it redundant to say half lab, half retriever? and secondly, you didnt think about the space and energy needs of the dog? unless this is the last of a litter, and then what kinda space do the parents have?
