Hiding Onesies Must Have Lost Its Novelty
Because now the Activity-Starved Breastfeeding Mothers of LJ have embarked on a letter writing campaign to LJ Abuse!

What, you ask, is this newest conspiracy against breastfeeding?

LJ's Restrictions for default icons!!!!

Because, even though LJ's restrictions against showing boobies in default icons has been around, since, I dunno - forever, the Activity-Starved Breastfeeding Mothers of LJ have decided that their breasts are special!!!

Why, their breasts are used for feeding babies, and that's very important. So important, in fact, that LJ should make a special exemption just for them!

Now remember guys, the only real restriction LJ has on icons is what you choose to use as your default. So, nobody's saying you can't have an icon featuring little Jayden/Kaytlyn snacking away - it just can't be your default.

But, that's not good enough for our heroes - an all-out letter writing campaign is in order!

Not to mention, the obligitory post to fuckyoulist. Hey, isn't it against the TOS to disclose the contents of correspondence from LJ Abuse? Or am I making that up?

I can't even begin to list all of the posts made in [info]boob_nazis regarding this issue, so you'll just have to go here and scroll through before they all get the friendslocked treatment.

But here's a quick synopsis of the [info]boob_nazis party line on this one:

[info]boob_nazis: Breastfeeding is natural therefore uncovered breasts are acceptable as default icons if they depict breastfeeding.

[info]normal_people: Right, but if LJ allows your exposed breast icons as defaults, it renders their policy ineffective. How will they be able to enforce this policy against users who show bare breasts in their default icons? You understand, don't you, that this is not yet another anti-breastfeeding conspiracy, but a fair application of LJ's policy with regards to default icons?

[info]boob_nazis: Breastfeeding is natural therefore uncovered breasts are acceptable as default icons if they depict breastfeeding.

*Sigh*

Here are some of the [info]booju_mooju posts on the issue:

http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/397404.html
http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/397623.html
http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/398544.html

Here's a link to the incredibly long winded form letter that LJ and Six Apart have been sent by 578586582 Activity-Starved Breastfeeding Mothers of LJ.

And, here's [info]cf_hardcore weighing in on the matter, and with a funny icon to boot:
http://community.livejournal.com/cf_hardcore/1831574.html

I have also decided that any community with the words "Nazis" and "Hardcore" in their names are, by default, filled with the most thin-skinned, whiney people in LJ Land.

So say I!

It's on metaquotes too!
Now if it shows up in dot_bdsm_snark I'll die laughing.

Nah, we can't find a way to work breastfeeding into it.

Unless you're breastfeeding a grown man.

I'm totally torn on this one. I would not have a breastfeeding icon, I find it strange that people feel the need to get the camera out while breastfeeding, but on the other hand, this sort of thing doesn't help in desexualising and normalising it.

Having said that, livejournal is a private company and they can make whatever rules they want.

And oh my god those boob nazis carry on! Anyone who was ever likely to sympathise with their apparently ENDLESS list of causes would be put off by their relentless whinging and bitching. Is there nothing that they can just laugh off and forget about?

Yep. That's pretty much where I come down on it.

Plus, is it REALLY that IMPORTANT to have a breastfeeding baby as your default icon? If it's that big a deal, shouldn't these folks be out participating in breastfeeding education efforts in their damned communities and actually doing some good, instead of whining on the internet about 100x100 pictures?

I think some people need to learn how to pick and choose their battles. Like you said, they're not telling them they CAN'T have the pics, just not use them as default. Which in my opinion, IS perfectly reasonable, because some people don't understand that breastfeeding isn't sexual.

And I am amused by the cf_hardcore thread. What always gets to me is that they always complain about the moos with the saggy boobies feeding their babies. But have they actually seen a breast full of milk? Not saggy.

Personally, I don't think the damn breastfeeding icons should be a violation of the TOS. But since they are? Oh fucking well. Do they have nothing better to do?

"No young child should be unsupervised on the Internet anyway"
from This post

ahem..

I don't want to see your boob. I'm 2 days away from 25 and I don't want to see it. I don't care if you have a baby, a 40 pound shark or a barbell hanging off your nipple, fucking hell, I don't want to see it. It isn't just about the children, it's about hey, not everyone who uses LJ wants to see your damn boob!

it's about thinking about others, sometimes! Some people just don't want to see your milky funbags (sorry.. channleing my husband here).

breasts are natural. Breastfeeding is natural. So are anal warts, seeping acne and urination. It doesn't mean it's ok to show those things in an icon (with the exception of emo camwhores and their self-gratifying/depricating icons.. their seeping acne is A-OK in my book).

Its just the internet and there are way worse things than breastfeeding and arseholes to be seen! If you dont like it, dont look at it, skip past it, its not hard!

A naked breast without a baby attached to it is natural too, but their "breastfeeding is natural and it's not obscene" whining implies that naked breasts that aren't being fed off of are obscene. They're... not. At all. It's just an LJ rule. I may not agree with the rule (not because of the breastfeeding thing, but because I think people need to get over their problems with nudity), but it's not anti-breastfeeding. They just love being the victims here.

Not true. WIth all the crap that's going down in regards to local/state legislations regarding breastfeeding protections, this is just insult to injury and people are speaking out. It's not about being a victim...especially when 2 months ago I could have been fined and given jail time for nursing my daughter in public if someone complained. It may be an exaggerated response but it's to a very real problem that needs to have resolution. I think we're all on the same side of the fence when we say out loud we wish the breast to be more than just a sexual object.

I can't for the life of me remember who it is, but one of the LJ Boob Nazis has a pro-breastfeeding icon that says something like "I love feeding my boys", and has a picture of her *massive* breasts. Down the the very bottom corners, you can see just a little sliver of a little head attached to each breast. That icon illustrates what I'd be willing to bet is the reason LJ won't make an exception. Most of the pro-breastfeeding icons I've seen are just using breastfeeding as an excuse to put their boobs in an icon. It's not a statement, it's a loophole.

Gods, the stupid runs deeper than the Danube. It is even insinuating itself in here. Sayo, I see exactly what you mean, if it gets close to your comfort zone then you will fight.

It is all very nimby (not in my back yard) with the crunchies. They are all up in arms about their precious tit picks, yet no one says they can't have them; they just need to take them out of default. FFS this isn't even the real world! How serious a business is the internet?

or, as I said:

I see breastfeeding icons in the same way I see someone putting up an icon of them making love. Yes, beautiful and natural and loving and blah blah blah, but in this society some people don't like seeing it right off the bat and it doesn't have to be your bloody default icon. Maybe it's because I feel that someone shouldn't be in your face about stuff to the point of being a asshole about it. There's a difference between "this is beautiful and natural" and "I am going to ram this in your face because I think or need I'm a better parent than you." Most people I see with those icons are the latter.

It is mildly amusing that if it were LJ banning some of the other rather more graphic icons out there the reaction from cf_hardcore would probably be something along the lines of it all being some great big stinking conspiracy on the part of parents to censor teh interwebs.

I really don't mind the occasional highly revealing breastfeeding icon being regarded as unsuitable, so long as breastfeeding isn't the issue per se. A relatively non-revealing image of a woman with a baby's head in front of one of her boobs and the other one covered by clothing should, if LJ are sensible about it, still be acceptable.

Especially, when this is LJs official explanation:

We ask only that you are willing to extend the same support and appreciation to, for instance, parents who choose to believe that it is inappropriate for their children to view unsolicited nudity in public. The physical-world analogy is not perfect in this situation; breastfeeding is indeed perfectly legal in public places, but in a public place, another parent is also able to cover a child's eyes or remove a child from the area if he or she believes that such an action is inappropriate for their child to see. We feel that the restrictions we have always placed on default usericons strike the best balance between individual expression and individual courtesy.

We do agree that in a perfect world, the issue would not arise, but unfortunately, this is not a perfect world, and we believe that our solution to the issue is a reasonable compromise between two wildly divergent points of view regarding what is and is not appropriate for LiveJournal -- not simply regarding icons depicting breastfeeding, but all material which a parent or other individual might feel is inappropriate for public.

If this was a reaction that someone got to just about ANYTHING else, cf_hardcore would be on it like white on rice. Their only reason is "some child might see it." In fact, these two paragraphs are all they are replying with if you continue to tell them that their reasoning is lame. Parent your children and know what they are looking at on the internet.

LJ will "nail them all" if people report them. Legally, the LJ abuse team cannot police the site without therefore taking on a certain legal accountability for the content: a very sketchy situation, so instead they expect people to report issues that might violate the TOS.

If you, or anyone else, reported all the other graphic icons on LJ, they too would be warned/suspended.

I can totally understand not agreeing that breasts and/or breastfeeding do not violate an obscenity law, but LJ does, and you did agree to the TOS when you signed up for your account, so you have to abide by it whether you like it or not.

LJ clearly is not going to change its stance and as a private business it doesn't have to either.

Also, remember, LJ isn't banning these icons: you can use the icons in every post you make by choosing it from your drop-down menu, you simply can't have it as your default. Arguing that offensive images are all over the net is irrelevant, since LJ cares only about what is on its own site and what it deems is acceptable or not, which is not an unreasonable position.

I think a lot of people actually agree that breasts shouldn't be seen as obscene or sexual, but this issue is still being blown way out of proportion considering the nature of private owned companies/blogging tools and their legal rights to enforce whatever rules/content they so choose.

This is a matter of respect, I think. I have 3 kiddos. I breastfed all of them, quite often in public. But when I did, I made sure I was discreetely covered. If I was in mixed company, I politely asked if anyone would be bothered by my breastfeeding, and if they were, I retreated to another room. Hey, some people ARE a little wigged out by it, but that doesn't make them bad people. I tried to make people around me comfortable with the fact that I was breastfeeding, but at the same time, I took care of my business. My guys got fed. It's respect!

This thing about the icons is ridicuous. You can have your icons. Use them in the parenting and bf communities. But really, they aren't approrpriate in other forums. Some people are uncomfortable with the sight of boobs, or breastfeeding babies, or both. They should be able to avoid those icons if they choose. Just because you choose to bf your child doesn't give you the right to flash your breast, child attached or not, all over creation. No one really wants to see it. And I feel the exact same way about vaginas, penises, assholes, and depictions of any sex act. I don't wanna see them unless I am in a community where it is expected.

Okay, I don't think LJ should restrict icons, but whatever. It's their rules, we have to play by them. However, something just astounds me. Why, in anyone's right mind, would a parent want to put piccies on the interweb of their naked children? (http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/398544.html?thread=29708496#t29708496) They are discussing how naked kid picture icons are against the rules. And I want to know: why would any responsible parent put up such pictures of their children when the interweb, and lj, is full of pervs? I mean, it's their kids, and they can do what they want, but I sure in the hell wouldn't want my kids naked on the internet for all to see. In one of my other communities, someone stole the pictures of two NICU twins from a google picture search, and claimed them as her own babies. She had this whole bullshit story going on until someone contacted the REAL parents about the situation. Now, if that can happen to just hospital preemie pictures, I don't want to know what happens with nude kiddie pictures.

Am I coherant at all? Because for some reason I feel like I just rambled away there...

You're right, they can make whatever rules they want, however they
LJ abuse allowed the person to use an icon of a topless woman as long as nipples aren't showing (http://hardvice.livejournal.com/271766.html) sure, the person has changed their default icon,of their own choice, but that's not the point.
The point is, they can't say that a default icon of a topless woman with her nipples blocked out is ok,but that an icon of a breast with a baby latched on (also blocking the nipple) is not.
Either naked breasts with nipples blocked are ok,or they aren't.

the problem is not that they think they're special, but that most of their icons don't violate the rule. basically it says a nude shot of a boob with nipple and areola can't be used. if a baby's covering that, you dont have that.

I don't think breastfeeding should be lumped in with sexual or violent images. I think if a person is traumatized or offended by seeing a breastfeeding baby (even in a situation which can seem a bit attention whorish) - they need to get a thicker skin. I can't think of any place where Livejournal would be appropriate, but a 100x100 fuzzy web cam pic of a breastfeeding child would not.
Comparing it to masturbation is just stupid and ignorant and I don't think that that icon was funny, other than it showed how ridiculously unreasonable people from [info]cf_hardcore can be.

That said...LJ is a private company. Don't like it? Move on. They aren't forbidding use of the icons at all, just not as a default picture. Though this whole drama has made for much enjoyable reading to distract me from working on my marketing paper :D

Lastly: Get Firefox. Get the Adblock plugin. Problems about icons solved.

The funny part is all the complaining about OTHER inappropriate icons. Do people really expect LJ to police every person's ever-changing default icons? If you don't REPORT inappropriate icons, how are they supposed to know?

This whole thing is funny. Although I find myself in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with LJ Abuse for the first time in my two year LJ history.

You should also add communities with "_rage" in their names to your "thin-skinned and whiney" rule.
