Banking Woes
...my bank continuously screws me out of money...


I don't understand how banks work. If the bank tells me online that I have money, I should have money. I don't know why the bank can't read my mind and know all my transactions instantly so I don't have to keep any records myself.

"This is the fourth time this has happened within the past 3 months. I'm tired of it. Do most banks do this?"

Don't most people eventually learn from their mistakes?

Hmmmm and here I thought keeping a running total of what went in the account, and tallying up what I take *out* lets ME know *instantly* if I have enough money to say, oh.. FEED MY KIDS.

This post has served to remind me once again that I need to start keeping track of my fucking transactions. I mostly just trust that God will smile upon me and I will not overdraw my account. It has mostly worked, except when God frowned upon me and gave me a junky boyfriend that stole my debit card.
Time to call mommy and have her balance my checkbook!! :( :(

I suck with money, and I used to get overdraft charges all the time too because I didn't keep my checkbook balanced. But at least I knew it was my own damn fault and didn't try to blame my bank.

She didn't try to blame the bank. She ASKED if it was the banks fault. When she was told it wasn't the banks fault she said she was going to start getting help in balancing her account.

Am I the only one who keeps a running mental tally of my bank account balances in my head? I can tell you within $20 how much I have in chequing and savings and how much my balances are on my credit card, line of credit, and mortgage without even thinking about it.

I actually do try to not overdraft my account but some banks just live to sodomize you. I used to use TCF and I sold some stuff on ebay because money was tight. A month later ebay tries to charge me 10 dollars in fees that I completely forgot about. I had 6 dollars in my account. TCF refuses the charge and charges me 33 dollars overdraft, so ebay tries to put it through again. TCF refuses the charges and does it again. Rinse and repeat FIVE TIMES.

So there I was, almost 200 dollars in the hole over a damn 10 dollar charge. The way I feel is you either refuse the charge and don't charge me shit or you let it through and charge me 33 dollars once. What they did should be illegal. I went in and tried to get all those charges off my account because they way they did it seemed incredibly sneaky. They took 1 off and I still had to pay 135 dollars. That account got closed sooo fast.

i love when people complain about overdrafting their account. i mean, i always have a good idea of what's in my account (and it's always WAY more than I could spend) so if my bank said I had a $24 available balance online...i'd probably forgo the CANDY anyway. It's not the bank's fault you're dumb!

Oh, and get a job that gives me more than 10 hours a week.

And it was a balance of $25 and available of $24, that's always and indication to me that there's a charge that didn't go through, usually gas for my car (for about 4 days it just holds out $1). But then I also keep my receipts until I see it clear...

The OP is also 18 and probably still learning the ins & outs of a checking account. I know when I was 18, I did something similar and all it took was someone sitting me down and explaining how the charges were processed and I got it. I'd like to think that it happened because I was unaware of how things worked rather than because I was "stupid". :)

Maybe I'm just not in as snarky of a mood as usual but her profile says she's 18. She has just yet to learn money managing skills but hopefully overdraw fees will force her to figure it out and FAST.

Her comments weren't too ridiculous to me, I expected it to be more, "MY BANK SUCKS BALLS, I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO ANY MONEY BALANCING, IT'S THEIR JOB!"

At least she is asking for help and it's not some 35 year old asking that question. Then I would be really concerned.

I completely agree! Haven't had any delay problems with my debit account - EVER. The only time transactions take time to go through for me is on my credit account.

What the hell kinda of bank does she use online? Wachovia at least tells you what's in your account right now and what's in your account since a certain date. It may not list all you purchased then, but you get an idea what you have around and the stuff not listed is in 'pending transactions.'

Seriously. I had Citizen's Bank and now I have BoA, and they're both speedy as hell. It might not go through for ages, but it'll tell me that the money is at least somewhere in the ether.

When you're 18 it's totally normal.

I didn't get to a place where I was regularily carrying a balance in my account until my late 20's. Then we hit a rough patch again and again it was single digits in the account. And now we're back to carrying a balance. Life's hard out there for a pimp, let me tell you internet!
