Small supid.
Over at [info]mock_the_stupid everyone mocks a woman who doesn't speak English very well for having the name Latrine, which is a Spanish name, but means potty in English. Alas MTS doesn't get other cultures.

I knew a guy who was biracial with his father black and his mother being from eastern europe somewhere. In her language, his name meant "gift".

I read the actual entry, and she never once clarified the Spanish pronunciation (lah TREE neh), and it sounds like the woman really did pronounce it "Latrine". :/

The woman was clearly a fluent speaker of English (indicated by her southern, not spanish, accent) and therefore it can be assumed that she was a native speaker or learned it at a young age. Given that, any parents knowingly naming a child something that is a synonym with outhouse in a language that a child is going to grow up speaking is a stupid move.


Wow, what a broad assumption to make just to have something to mock. Just because the woman had a southern accent doesn't mean the parents are from the US/speak English or had any idea that their daughter would go to the US/speak English in the naming process. There's a whole range of possibilities that doesn't end in "LET'S NAME OUR KID POTTY!!!!!!!!!"

Well, I'm Latina, and I've been to South America on more than a few occasions, to visit family and the like, and I've never come across this name.

It would never have occured to me that this is a Spanish name. Latrina maybe.

Yeesh. We had exchange students from Germany come to our high school, and one of them was named Facko - and, yes, most of us did pronounce it "Fuck-o" and giggled like morons every time someone said it.

The funniest thing is that all that misunderstanding could have been avoided if the OP would have said what she meant.

She was obviously wanting us to know she was making fun of a black person's name (Latrine Johnson) but didn't want to say "black woman" and have everyone go OMG RACIST on her!
This is evidenced by the "Why my cellphone don't work?" and "Why that is?" to subtly show us that she is a white girl trying to convery a black person speaking "ebonics".

She's an undercover racist! LOL.

Chiming in with the others. That is definitely not a common Spanish name, nor does it really sound like any other traditional name. If people are using it, I bet anything that it's a made-up name used because the parents like the sound of it. If that is the case (and I don't see any evidence that it isn't), then this cannot really be argued to be a case of cultural insensitivity. She'd get made fun of in a lot of Spanish-speaking countries too.

My friend's mother worked at a doctor's office, and they had a new patient named Fuc Yu or something like that.

She was scared to call him, but she did anyway and asked for "Fuck You". He screamed, "IT'S FOOK YAO!!!" and slammed down the phone.

Personally, I'd be thrilled if I found out my name meant something really dirty in another country.
