After I sold my first novel last year to a reputable publisher, I counted that as my big professional achievement in life, then proceeded with my real life's passion, which is to live a life of utter hedonism.

In 2006, I've spent, on average, $10,000 per month on food, travel, and shopping. I used the last of my own money to buy a 32 foot boat I've only set foot on once. After my parents bailed me out, I was lucky enough to fall in love with a man 19 years my elder who had been looking for a woman to spoil (and marry).

I tell everyone I'm a "freelance writer" but all I do is sleep until noon, drink expensive wine and scotch, and dabble, for about an hour per day, on my writing.

I have a master's and a law degree, and I don't feel the least bit guilty that my actual job is "well-kept woman."

My favorite part is if you read her blog at www.randombird.com it doesn't look as if she has that much money at all. I'm so confused.

This is one of the things:

It’s just no boat living until I can afford something that’s clean and spacious enough and runs safely. It’s still something I want to try.
Once this boat gets running and fixed up, though, we can at least stay on it for weekend trips which should give me my boat fix for now.

So, she bought a 32 foot boat she only set foot on once...not because she has so much money to throw around but because it's a big piece of shit and is too unsafe to step on more than once...now it makes sense.

And then in reference to her upcoming wedding she says:

I didn’t pay a single cent for anything for my first wedding and feel bad that I didn’t appreciate all the little costs, like champagne, and sales tax.
She's rich...why is she concerned about the costs of champagne and sales tax now?

But moreso (really) I am a product of my own life, I guess, and me-centric enough to really believe that becoming a parent matures a person in ways nothing else does. My husband and I can both realize we're talking to a childless middle aged person within just a few minutes of conversation, because there's some weird kind of naivete - even in very intelligent, accomplished people - that I think I'll get flamed for mentioning, but nevertheless recognize every time. And, I don't know how to articulate it, but...there's just something very natural and fulfilling within the cycle of life to have your own kids. ... I just can't imagine my own life being COMPLETE, without having kids, and so I infer that my own children would be depriving themselves of something very profound if they skipped it.

That's not incredibly offensive and wrong or anything! I can't stand that. "Only parents are mature! Every person without kids is deprived and hasn't truly experienced life!"

They’re down on individual financial and social privilege. Former suburban white kids are telling me that it’s bad that I don’t have a “real job” and still eat lobster every week. They think I am (and I quote) “immoral” because RSK and I live well and do not give 58% of it to children in the Panhandle that boxed macaroni and cheese three nights a week. Apparently, social responsibility now means that you can’t enjoy what you have, whether you earned it or whether you were blessed with it though various avenues of privilege...Regardless of the cause, if there is a real shift away from capitalism happening today, I wonder what type of struggles a privileged kid will face in 20 years. Will she be marginalized for having too much? If so, will it become an ignoble goal to go into a career that pays too much in proportion to its social benefit?
