Goodbye, cruel cat_lovers!

  • Dec. 13th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Over in [info]cat_lovers (Yes, [info]cat_lovers wank. Who knew?) [info]ibritt posts a series of pictures making it appear that President Obama is throwing a snowball at a cat.

It's worth a giggle, except to [info]_magicsocks , who "fail[s] to see the humor in that", along with an icon about abusing stupidity.

She couldn't careless what other people think of her.

She's done (done, I say!) with the chat. So if you don't hear from her, that's why! (JSYK)

But she's not a drama queen - she deleted a bunch of comments. Not in the thread - in her email.

The best part though isn't when she flounces: "But after the crap that took place in this community over something stupid and some kept it going. I could have understood it if it was about being mean to a cat or something like that. But it was a simple misunderstanding. I won't be in a community like that."

It's when she flounces and comes back to comment more! (Be on the lookout for hilarious malapropism, and calling of the "grammer police")

You see, she didn't think it was a fake picture! Luckily, she has an advocate in nutbar lil_goldielocks. She's an animal lover and KNEW it was fake and STILL didn't find it funny!

Japan wank to Australia wank

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 3:11 PM
Over in [info]aramatheydidnt, a Japanese pop culture community, an entry about how over 40% of Japanese people see no need to have children brought in a whole lot of stupid.

First we have some relatively tame stupid from [info]mele_3_4 who doesn't quite understand how birth-rates relate to immigration. We can accept that, maybe she just hasn't read a whole lot of books with words in them.

Things get interesting when [info]nymphetamosa reckons Aboriginal Australians should just "get over" the British taking their lands because it happened such a very long time ago. But it gets worse when she suggests that Aboriginal Australians should be thankful for colonialism, I mean now they even have electronics, communication and societal marginalisation. There's a glass ceiling above me but at least I have an iPod!
In an [info]ontd_political post about a Bank of America employee who was apparently fired for leniency in regards to persons having trouble paying back their credit card bills and such, member [info]vodkabeforenoon takes it upon herself to enlighten us as to how persons ALWAYS come to be in such dire straights:

"...no one forced those people to get credit cards. People live beyond their means and then get upset when banks are making a profit from their bad choices. It is stupid."

Even after it is pointed out to vodkabeforenoon that things like huge and unexpected interest jumps, medical emergencies and job loss, and pure bullshit happens, and cannot be prevented or predicted, she continues to just not get it.

A few choice quotes include this one, coming in response to struggles resulting from spouses dying or becoming seriously ill:

"Shit happens. No reason to be pissed off at a corporate. It is not like they do not forewarn you."

And the brilliant observation that FOOD STAMPS FIX EVERYTHING! STOP CRYING AND GO GET SOME!

Thank you vodkabeforedawn for teaching us that shit is always your fault, even when you don't plan for it, even when you are a responsible person, and even when the most ugly tragedy strikes. BOOTSTRAPS, Y'ALL! NEVER FORGET!
A post is made with a video of Portia De Rossi on The View. Elisabeth Hasselbeck asks about whether or not "the word [marriage] is more important than the rights". Portia "explained that a 'lesser' term would imply that gay couples are lesser".

The comments are mostly unsurprising for ONTD. However, [info]hoodiefan says that Hasselbeck has a point and predictably starts up a little shitstorm. The real stupid is this comment though:

"It just seems like a huge waste of time and resources for gay activists to be focused on getting to use ~a word~ when there are actual human rights issues at stake, like the fact transgendered people often times can’t even find work, have medical coverage ETC but lets focus on the word so portia and ellen and other rich gays can have bridal registries, etc etc"

Consensus is not stupid. Sorry.
Over in [info]equestrian a rather cool video is posted (cool for those who like horses, at least) about a horse doing at liberty work (read: not tied to anything or anyone) and going over an obstacle course very similar to what one might find at a dog agility competition.

Most of the comments are along the lines of "Wow cool!" until [info]wagrobanite enters the scene and decides that the video is "not really like canine agility" at all and refuses to see the similarities insisting that because she has competed in the sport for years she is TEH EXPERT in all things agility. And proceeds to split hairs, refusing apparently, to recognize that horses would be incapable of performing on a dog agility course.

[info]hydrogen_atom tries to be helpful by providing a definition of agility from an agility association website but [info]wagrobanite insists that there's more to agility than just that.

As added lulz, [info]silverblaidd utterly misses [info]harnessphoto's sarcasm

Black Friday

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 1:10 AM
Over in [info]wtf_inc a video is posted of utter chaos during Black Friday at a Wal-Mart.

Comments are fairly average until [info]distilledvanity decides that Wal MArt is only for poor people. Anyone going inside a Walmart deserves to be trampled to death

Then [info]bludstone makes the point that you spend more money at Wal Mart because of poorly made products and [info]protocollie takes offence because of food and things continue.

think before you say things

Small but classy.
EDIT: OP's post screencapped for your viewing pleasure

[info]everythingtold goes out for a meal at a restaurant. As soon as the waitress appears, she gives the waitress her demands -- bring the drink, meal, to-go boxes, and check at the same time and don't come back until then -- because "I really go out of my way to make life as easy as possible for people in customer service".

When the waitress gets annoyed with her, she points out that she's not being annoying. "I turned to the couple at the table next to me and asked if I was bothering them. They shook their heads 'no'. I asked the family at the table on the other side and asked the same thing."

Then, there's a lengthy diatribe about her theory on tipping: "servers get $3-something an hour and minimum wage is $7:30 [sic] per hour. Generally speaking, if I am going to spend an hour in a restaurant, I will be tipping $4."

Finally, after paying her check, the OP gets up for a cigarette break, leaving her music player & book behind. After her cigarette break, she's SHOCKED to discover her table has been bused!

Commentors repeatedly point out that requesting the waitress only visit your table twice -- once to take your order and once to drop everything from drink to bill off -- is very inconvenient for waitstaff, but OP doesn't care. "I guess a lot of people in here hate me for trying to make life easy, lol."

"I actually wasn't trying to come off as SpecialSnowflake/EntitlementBitch at all - just the opposite."

"I cn't [SIC] believe that many people think it's annoying to make sure server doesn't have to worry about me very much."

It's not -real- reading

Just so you know, [info]sblmnldrknss knows that "comic books aren't challenging."

Reading should only ever be at age level or above and though she claims to read EVERYTHING in one comment, she is quick to later inform us that, in fact, she never reads children's fiction for fun because it is beneath her.

Apparently "if you're over, I don't know, 12, reading Harry Potter doesn't 'count' as reading anymore than reading People magazine 'counts' as reading." An interesting judgment from someone who has never read the books at all.

In that same vein, one doesn't have to actually KNOW about something in order to deem it unworthy in her world. she has never seen an episode of the Simpsons, but can claim with all confidence that it is juvenile because it involves animation. Also, all video games are childish.

And yes, this is the same person who would let a teenage daughter die after a botched abortion because abortion is wrong and getting her child medical help would make her morally culpable for the abortion.

indeed fish in a barrell but...

Figured this stupid was big enough for s_f:

Whitney Isleib, a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, is Lil Wayne for Halloween. Unfortunately she decides to paint herself black which I guess is in this year. Unfortunately, the majority of ontd does not understand why people could possibly find this offensive.

More gems include:
BLACK PEOPLE CAN DO IT

This is not blackface because a) I am black and b) I am not offended so duh

this one just makes people think and isn't stupid

I AM MORE OFFENDED BY LIL WAYNE BECAUSE...STEREOTYPES, UGH

and [info]merbella just let's us all know that we perpetuate racism by being offended

And there is more stupid throughout.

Edit:

More favorites include:
[info]reddressorblue reminds me of this one where [info]xladymissiex compares drag to blackface.

[info]hardcoresince3 brings the one about the white girl who can barely afford taco bell so [direct quote]: WHAT FUCKING WHITE PRIVILEGE? YOU'RE SUCH A FUCKING RACIST BITCH I RECEIVE NO FUCKING PRIVILEGE WHATSOEVER! I'm so sick of this fucking phrase being thrown around just because I happen to be white. Sorry my parents were white? Sorry that a VERY LONG TIME AGO people acted like douchebags to other people? NOT MY FUCKING FAULT.

[info]strangestsea didn't let this one slip: [info]ohyouaremystar black peepz need to calm down

I'm too speechless to even write up a witty summary. So just read:

20 people witnessing the rape of an unconscious, beaten girl must not have known that it was rape!

Come on people, as if a bunch of teenagers would be cool with gang rape! You have links telling me all about our youths rape culture? LIES! IT'S ALL LIES!

Those are the 2 main threads. Have fun beating your head against your desk.

ps. Be on the lookout for the "you got gang raped & people stood by & watched? I'm sorry that happened but well we're not talking about you" thread. Priceless.

ETA: [info]sgiffy comes to play in [info]sf_drama. More headdesk ensures.

Dear [info]poor_skills,
I got a free cast iron pan that has been sitting in a puddle of oven cleaner for the last year and a half. How do I clean it before using it?

Most members of the community say to throw the damn thing away and replace with a new one. Or a at least don't use it to cook food. Common sense advice, actually, no?

Obviously not. [info]caligineux pulls out the chemistry book and off we go. Of course, "My chemistry is a bit dusty, but unless someone has a good explanation why the pan is unsafe, I would say go for it." Other than the explanation that it's a porous cast iron pan that has been sitting in a puddle of goddamn OVEN CLEANER for 18 MONTHS!
[info]marveen agrees with that - "I'm going with the commentors who say to soak it, neutralize with vinegar, etc.

I would then follow up by boiling it filled with pure water, possibly outside, two or three times and scrubbing with plain soap in between.
"

Oven cleaner. A year and a half. On a cast iron pan. "Scrub it with soap."

ETA: Sorry, guys, didn't mean to disable comments! Fixed it and thanks for the heads-up.
ETA 2: Okay, so it's not porous (the pan, that is...). My bad. My point still is who in their right mind will use a pan that has been treated like this to prepare food? Raise your hand if you are one of those people, please.

Okay, I give up. Failpost is fail, just like my chemistry knowledge. I knew I should've paid attention in high school at some point.

Eine kleine sneeze wank

  • Oct. 20th, 2009 at 11:46 AM
(Is there a joke about wank and tissues to be made here?)

A few days old, but comments were still trickling in as of yesterday, so.

In [info]mock_the_stupid, a post is made about an amusing ad campaign showing people how to properly sneeze into their elbows to prevent spreading germs.

An Australian named [info]silece responds: umm... what happened to sneezing into one's hands?

At first he seems to labor under delusion that the only reason to cover up a sneeze is to prevent projecting globs of snot into the air, but upon being informed about the spread of germs he pulls out the ol' "I'm sorry, but..." routine (cousin of "No offense, but [offensive statement or question]").

I'm sorry...But do they grow you without immune systems in America?

He really ramps up the sensitivity in response to a statement about past flu epidemics that have killed a lot of people: yeah, you're right. it's really been a threat to the species.

And finally, regarding immunocompromised people: For starters, the ahimsas pretty much died out. You can't live without harming anything. Living in a bubble because someone else might get sick from a chance encounter: not going to happen. Other people who don't take precautions appropriate to their situations: doubly not my problem.
