I got a free cast iron pan that has been sitting in a puddle of oven cleaner for the last year and a half. How do I clean it before using it?


Most members of the community say to throw the damn thing away and replace with a new one. Or a at least don't use it to cook food. Common sense advice, actually, no?

Obviously not. caligineux pulls out the chemistry book and off we go. Of course, "My chemistry is a bit dusty, but unless someone has a good explanation why the pan is unsafe, I would say go for it." Other than the explanation that it's a porous cast iron pan that has been sitting in a puddle of goddamn OVEN CLEANER for 18 MONTHS!
marveen agrees with that - "I'm going with the commentors who say to soak it, neutralize with vinegar, etc.

I would then follow up by boiling it filled with pure water, possibly outside, two or three times and scrubbing with plain soap in between."



Oven cleaner. A year and a half. On a cast iron pan. "Scrub it with soap."
