Very short stupid, no drama, but it gave me a chuckle.

Roger Ebert discusses "free range kids" and the fears that keep parents from letting their kids roam free today as they did when he was young. He's pretty balanced about it; he admits that some of the evil parents fear today seems more prevalent than when he was a kid, at least according to the media, but it's still sad to think that fewer kids much have free time outdoors.

This sparks a moderately interesting and wide-ranging discussion about other people's free-range childhoods or lack thereof, and theorizing about the results.

But then there's a commenter who goes by the name of Peter Wendt:

"I saw a movie recently (can't remember the name, some documentary I think) about a young cub scout who is left to wander unsupervised and ends up shanghaied on a floating house to South America! It all ended okay, thank goodness, but it really makes you think."

The comment is so stupid, no one even responds to it.

Over in bad_service, lorelei633 says, "Oh noez! I didn't clean my apartment on move-out like they asked and now they sent me a bill!"

After the general public tells her that it's pretty standard operating procedure, the self-entitlement escalates.

These views include 9/11 being an "inside job", global warming being "mind boggling", and birth control sickens and devalues women, causes depression, cancer and sterility and suicidal tendencies.

There's lots of blah blah - "Die Speidi", and then in a thread that's all "Yay, birth control", planet_janet mentions her friend who refuses to take regular birth control, but has taken Plan B "like 4 times in the past year".

stah_chica totally knows a girl like this, who is afraid of hormones, but "Plan B is what, like taking Tylenol?"

l_dolla tells us that Plan B is like taking a week's worth of birth control pills, and planet_janet agrees "It is definitely WAY worse to take plan B than it is to take the pill.. especially four times within the span of a year. A few days ago in wow_ladies, frostfur made her very first post, sharing a slightly tl;dr story of a 15 year old player incessantly flirting with her. (Abridged version: frostfur initially assumes the other player is also female and asks if she's bisexual, to which the other player answers yes. Later it comes out that the other player is actually a male.)

Most of the commenters find the story amusing, a handful wonder why frostfur brought up the sexual orientation question in the first place, and batty_kitto makes a long meandering comment about...I don't really know what.

Today, frostfur made her very last post to wow_ladies, having apparently been turned off to the community forever by the few comments that had fairly politely engaged her about the bisexual question.

Okay, so I'm a stupidfree woman who likes stupid, but I don't appreciate it when people say to me, "Oh, you'll change your mind," when my stance on not having stupid comes up in conversations. I also have a big beef with the people who allow their stupid to run wild in restaurants and other public places. That's the reason why I joined the stupid_free forum. However, I must say that in the past few weeks it's become less of a "let me tell you about the asshole stupid I just encountered" to entries like http://community.livejournal.com/stupid_free/1153236.html.

People seem to chime in with a lot of answers of varying credibility, but all being reasonably helpful and thoughtful until we get to snakewhissperer, who is upset that people would seek historical accuracy because it might make modern Druids look bad.

Over in childfree, unstableharpy makes a post about a woman who miscarried in her third month of pregnancy, and was very traumatized by the event. Apparently the OP stumbled upon a part of a website dedicated to the memories of unborn babies. unstableharpy can't seem to understand why a woman might be upset about a miscarriage, saying, "Lady, I understand you're distressed after losing baby but you were 3 months along, it's normal to have miscarriage so early into pregnancy. There's no reason to make the doctor sound as a spawn of satan."

Some of the comments politely agree that perhaps the doctor might have been out of line. Others suggest that pregnancy hormones do weird things, and maybe that pregnancy just wasn't meant to be.

But then you have the claims of, "Wow. It's just a fetus. Sometimes they die - it happens." and my personal favorite, the person who calls the woman a fucking nut and then suggests she goes to medical school to figure out exactly why her pregnancy miscarried.

Yes, let's completely rule out the idea that maybe this woman REALLY WANTED a child, and was rather upset to find out she miscarried? It's just impossible to feel any emotion for your unborn child until you actually have it, right guys? RIGHT?

As someone pointed out in the comments, "Mocking grieving people is fun. Let's go out and laugh at women who've had miscarriages." I guess it's good there's at least one person holding down the crazy fort over there.

In normally drama-free community beauty101, an often reposted list of beauty companies who test their products on animals is reposted .... again..... Politico has pretty much made our day with this one. It's like the DC Summer Interns blog finished college, got a Masters in political science from GW and ended up at the desk of Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.). An exec assistant at a lobbying firm e-mailed the congressman's scheduler/office manager Elizabeth Becton, addressing her as Liz.

And here, all hell breaks loose.

Becton seems to have gone off on a mad tangent, as 19 (yes, 19!) e-mails unravel before our delighted eyes, with the assistant apologizing, oh, in about 17.5 of them. Becton refuses to let it drop, falling into a paranoid hysteria that someone "tricked" the assistant into calling her Liz because THEY KNEW IT WAS SO SO WRONG.

"I REALLY want to know who told you to call me that."

The snippy one-line e-mails go on for awhile, with our dear buddy Liz repeatedly demanding to know who told this person that Liz is a common nickname for Elizabeth, or something. Brace yourself for the big finish....

"Let me put it this way, they don't know me and perhaps they were PRETENDING to know me better than they do and pretended that I go by Liz. They did YOU a disservice.

In the future, you should be VERY careful about such things. People like to brag about their connections in DC. It's a past time for some. It's also dangerous to eaves drop, as you have just found out.

Quit apologizing and never call me anything but Elizabeth again. Also, make sure you correct anyone who attempts to call me by any other name but Elizabeth. Are we clear on this? Like I said, it's a hot button for me.
