In 1985, I worked as an assistant to Howard Chaykin and Walter Simonson at Upstart Studios and, down the hall, Bill Sienkiewicz, located in the Garment District of Manhattan. Now, I work at DEEP6 Studios in Gowanus, Brooklyn with a good bunch of talented artists and the below quotes [re: Chaykin's AMERICAN FLAGG! collection] reminded me of how I currently feel:

“I tend to forget in the midst of all this that it was such a good book,” says Larsen. “Between this and Frank Miller doing Daredevil and Walt Simonson doing Thor, all in the same studio...” he trails off wistfully.

“They were producing really the best work that they ever produced all sitting next to each other trying to one-up each other. Ultimately, when all is said and done, we’ll be able to look at it and say, ‘This is a good book.’ I think the time and effort will pay off.”

Mad Magazine

I just got some video editing soft wear, and used the shots I took of our trip to Governors Island
last weekend to test it out.
I found that my Mac is actually a great stand in for a Casio Keyboard!

THE PULSE: What other projects are you working on?

J.M. DeMATTEIS: I’ve got a project in the works for IDW called THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SAVIOR 28. It’s a story, spanning more than six decades, about superheroes, politics, violence, pacifism and pop culture (among other things). This is a project I’ve been developing for years and I’ve finally found the right artist for it: Mike Cavallaro, who was just nominated for an Eisner Award for his wonderful PARADE (WITH FIREWORKS) series from Image. SAVIOR 28 should be out late in ‘08.

Summer at Deep six means fighting

No, that’s just a joke. We share it willingly!

I’m posting an interesting side job is just did.
Our landlord out here at the Gowanus Studio also
own a Winery and needed a new illustration for his label.

I really enjoy drawing houses and buildings. I don’t know why.
As your retailer for it!

I also did a MAD job. I put some of my studio mates
in, but only a very few will ever notice.

Comic Con

Yes, I was at Comic Con this weekend too.

There's so much coverage of this weekend's NY Comic Con that there's really not much to add.
I had a good time. Friday's ACT-I-VATE panel was a success with it's full attendance and spirited dialogue. I participated in another panel entitled "HOW I GOT MY JOB" with former Marvel editor Andy Schmitt, DC/Vertigo/freelance writer Stuart Moore, Bob Greenberger, and penciler Jamal Igle. It was a really interesting conversation, and I think the audience got a lot out of the different experiences we could relate.

I went into it with a few goals, not least of which was the procurement of issue #136 of THE MIGHTY THOR by the McCartney/Lennon, Strummer/Jones, Jagger/Richards of comics -- Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. I think this issue's the perfect distillation of everything they did best, their quintessential hit single. I'm so glad you agree! I must have paged through at least 10 - 15 copies and finally settled on this one...

NYComic Con at Deep Six

Busy times at Deep Six last week
as we prepared for the NYComic Con
and entertained famous guest artists.
Many pictures and films…

Feral Dalrymple stopped by and worked
on his “Omega the unknown” comic while
showing us which fingers he uses the most
when it comes to drawing “Known unknowns” as
opposed to “known knowns.”

ACT-I-VATE AT THE NY COMIC CON, April 18 - 20

The New York Comic Con, April 18th - 20th, 2008 at the Jacob Javits Center is fast approaching, and it seems that many local ACT-I-VATE members will be in attendance. Here's some details:
