hopeful news
From today's NY Times:

"NBC executives said earlier this week that to protect their new entries from being overwhelmed by competition on other networks, they would revise the schedule they had announced. NBC could rearrange its schedule any time over the next month or so."

I wonder what they'll put in that slot instead? Do NBC actually have any existing shows that won't tank when faced with Grey's & CSI?

The quick answer: Absolutely not. ;)

Hee. I'm British, so I wasn't sure, but yeah, I guess not.

NBC's hour drama line-up makes the Baby Jesus cry, basically. ER and the Law and Order franchises are their only "contenders" (and all at least 7 seasons old) with audiences that are about half of CSI's, and are all 10pm, not 9pm shows. Even CSI repeats get better numbers.

Their only show that cracks the Top Ten lately is Deal or No Deal, a bad game show with Howie Mandel.

Umm... yeah.

I think the only thing they can do is just keep ER (the current occupant of the Thursday at 8 timeslot) in place. It has survived against CSI all these years, so I don't why that will change. Except then it'll be up against Grey's Anatomy, which will absolutely murder ER.

ER's on at ten (nine central?), and would have been on after S60.

It is? Sorry, I didn't watch NBC at all this year except for the West Wing, so I'm not familar with their schedule at all.

They don't, which is why they should put in a show that they don't expect to get huge numbers in the first place -- cut their losses.

**feels hopeful and overprotective of new show/fandom**

I hope NBC makes a good choice this time. Even without Grey's Anatomy, what were they thinking when they put it up against the forerunning CSI! (Can we as a fandom slap collectively slap them upside the head?! Is that even possible!?)

Good news - thanks! Whatever happened to COUNTER programming? They should put a couple of sitcoms in there or something for those who don't want to watch dramaramas!

Exactly. They should totally put comedy or reality in that slot.

Has this ever happened before? I'm just really curious if NBC is protecting Studio 60 in particular, or if they ran into this on other networks.

The thing is, I have never understood the point of moving a show from a successful slot to "take on" another successful show. It's as if TV can's stand having multiple good shows. Like when Fox decided to put Simpsons against Cosby when Cosby was still strong. What was the point?

GA is pulling a strong showing in it's time slot. Why move it? Taking Studio 60 out of it, why bother putting it against CSI? I just have never understood what they get out of risking a great show that way. And it's the viewers who suffer because they have to choose which they want.

It is puzzling to me as well. I would think the point would be to get as MANY viewers as possible, and simply cannibalizing each other would seem to work against that. I mean, I understand wanting to "win" the ratings race, but you'd think making more money due to a larger amount of viewers, in whatever time slot works, would be more important.

And the networks do adjust their schedules accordingly all the time.
