Danny wandered aimlessly around his house, trying to work off some of the post-show energy. This was one of the worst times for him – all this adrenaline, with nothing to do, nothing but think about what he shouldn't, couldn't be doing. Suddenly his cell phone rang, interrupting his thoughts.
He glanced at the display and then answered. "Hey Harry. Good show."
"You too. You okay?" Well, that was blunt. Harriet usually was, at least with him.
"I'm . . . managing."
"Really?"
"Really."
"I'm praying for you."
"Thanks," Danny said sincerely. "How about you?"
"What about me?"
"Are you okay?"
"Of course," Harriet answered, a little too quickly. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Danny didn't even bother answering that. "He loves you, you know."
"I know."
"And you love him."
"Danny, I KNOW."
"I'm just saying."
"Well, stop."
"I just want you to be happy."
"Well, we may have missed the boat on that one. How about you?" Harriet asked, turning his words around on him.
"What about me?"
"You should be happy, too."
"I'm fine."
"Fine and happy aren't the same thing, Danny," she said softly.
"Well, it's the best I can do for now."
"Just promise me you'll think about it."
"Think about WHAT?" he asked, frustrated.
"Letting yourself be happy. I don't think it would be as complicated as you think it would."
"I'm fine. You're not making any sense."
"No, I'm making perfect sense. You're just slow."
"I'm – I'm not - " he spluttered.
"Get some sleep, Danny."
"You too." He paused. "Good night, Harriet. Thanks for calling."
"You're not going to do anything stupid?"
"Not tonight, at least. That's all I can promise."
"Fair enough. Good night, Danny."
