| About: | Sick about hearing myths about feminists? Here's another place to vent. You know what I'm talking about. You've heard the giggles. "Oh, I'm not a feminist! I shave my legs! I don't hate men!" And so forth. A straw-anything is a figment of someone's imagination that is what they want to believe in. It's a stereotype, a lie, a myth. It also invalidates the opinion of anyone who holds it. Here are some strawfeminists: Feminists hate housewives. *This explains why Seventies feminists coined the phrase, "Every mother IS a working mother!" Feminists are just bitter fat dykes who can't get laid. Hardly needs refuting, does it? Strawfeminists twist what feminism actually is till it's easy to dismiss and hate. Feminism is actually a complex political theory with many different schools of thought, but one basic concept: you must believe that women are human beings. Feminists believe--and it's been established---that women are discrimianted against, stereotyped, and abused worldwide on the basis of their gender. Most often this abuse comes from men, but from some women, too. Those women are the ones who believe in strawfeminists. Why do women make up strawfeminists? There's lots of reasons. Strawfeminists are always black and white caractures, stereotypes, inhumanly simple. The anti-feminists set themselves up in opposition to something that doesn't even exist, because only with those stereotypes to fight against do they feel sure of themselves. Anything nuanced is really difficult for them. Straw-anything is the sign of someone who really can't deal well with complexity. You'll find it everywhere. Here's one place we fight it. | |
