I know this community hasn't been updated for a while, but I just thought I'd say hi!
I'm a massive Raul fan, and can't wait for Company to come out on DVD on the 20th May. It wasn't broadcast here in the UK, so I can't wait to finally see it, since I've had the soundtrack since it came out. Anyway, Hi!

Don't forget to watch Company on PBS. The long-awaited Feb. 20th is fast approaching!

Check here to see when it's on in your area. It's scheduled for the 20th, but I know for me (LA/Orange County) it's not until the 23rd.

Seeing this show (and especially Raúl's performance) was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness truly great theatre. Do NOT miss the chance to see it for yourself.

COMPANY. OMFG. OH MY FUCKING JESUS CHRIST ON A CRACKER.

I laughed and cried and wet myself all at the same time. It was fucking PHENOMENAL. I honestly can't recall seeing a better production of ANYTHING in my entire life. The cast were amazing in all aspects, the staging was great, it was cleverly interpretted and obviously Raúl Esparza was god-like in his portrayal of Robert.

Barbara Walsh was absolutely SENSATIONAL as Joanne. She was the perfect blend of older, youthful, drunk, superior, unimpressed, funny and sad.

Her humor was rather catty, but her more tender moments were heartbreaking. The last verse of Ladies Who Lunch brought me to tears when she made it painfully obvious to us that she was talking about herself (the part that REALLY got me was her inflection on "another reason not to move".) And her final scene with Robert was, in a word, perfect. Absolutely PERFECT.

Raúl's performance was just.. mind blowing. His vocals were RIGHT THE FUCK ON, his acting was just glorious. I think that for my own purposes, his Bobby can best be described as a not-so-calloused-and-bitter Phillip Sallon. He retained his "signature" biting, sarcastic (and borderline catty) wit and humor, but it was so much warmer and softer than I've ever seen it. The scene leading into Being Alive had me, very literally, sobbing. His facial expressions were, at times, both hilarious and heart breaking. His faces during Barcelona, The Little Things You Do Together, You Could Drive a Person Crazy and his drunken gestures and faces during Ladies Who Lunch were all fucking HYSTERICAL.. whereas his expressions during Side by Side by Side from the point where he plays his kazoo and realizes he has no one to echo him to the end of the song absolutely tore. me. apart. He was just.. brilliant. Utterly brilliant.

I stage doored, of course and got to talk to him a bit after the show. I was pleasantly surprised at how sweet and accommodating he was to everyone, but especially how great he was with me. I got him to sign my playbill and calmly (as I could) gushed a little and told him that "As an aspiring actor, you are an inspiration. Your work means so much to me." and he thanked me very sincerely for saying so and put his hand on my shoulder, thanked me again and wished me the best of luck with my career and said that he hopes I make it.

My camera decided that it would be really cute to lose battery RIGHT when he came out, but Karen Rymar took a picture of us on her phone and, as soon as I get a phone again, I'll have that. ;DDD

That aside, I could have died right then. Not from the typical fangirlish glee of "ZOMGHETOUCHEDME!!1", but from the sheer satisfaction of meeting a great actor whose work and personality I admire. Okay, he's gorgeous and all of that, but that honestly has very little to do with my heart palpatations. This time, anyway. And I wasn't just blowing smoke up his ass when I said those things, I was being very honest. And the fact that he was not only gracious, but just genuinely nice made getting the opportunity to watch him work that much sweeter and satisfying.

For the record. I totally touched his butt. Accidentally, of course. And it was more a brush than a good handful. But nevertheless. And, as a lesbian, it's kind of a big deal for me. XDDD

Just heard that Raúl is supposed to be guest staring in Pushing Daisies. The role, original to be played by Paul Ruebens, is that of Alfredo Aldarisio, a homeopathic antidepressant salesman.

In other news, I email PBS about when they were planning on showing "Company" and here is there reply:

Thank you for writing regarding our programming.

The director of the television production has completed the
post-production work and the broadcast of 'Company' is most likely to be
scheduled for winter/spring of 2008.

Raúl's going to be the Stage Manager in a one-night reading of Our Town on August 17 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Williamstown is seriously out in nowhere (Western Mass.), but if you're in the area or up for a road trip, check it out. I might be making this up, but I think I remember hearing somewhere that Our Town is his favorite play, so his performance will probably be even more powerful than normal.

Company PBS broadcast

The June 30 performances of Company were filmed! There'll be a PBS broadcast as part of their Great Performances series at some point, as well as a DVD release. I am BEYOND OVERJOYED about this, especially the DVD part!

Tonys, and Company closing

I haven't posted about the Tonys because I've really just been too upset. I'm sure most (if not all) of you know anyway, but just in case:

1. Company won Best Revival of a Musical
2. Raúl lost to David Hyde Pierce in Curtains for Best Leading Performance by an Actor in a Musical

Today Company apparently posted its closing notice; the run will end July 1. I'm still not over the Tonys, on top of that, I really can't be very articulate about the Company closing, but every who can, please, please try to see it. It's a beautiful production, and I think I can safely say that there will never be a production of Company with a Bobby or a director who even begins to compare what Raúl and John Doyle have done and how they've made audiences feel. Raúl not winning Sunday night ultimately doesn't matter, and neither does Company's Tony win, really. What matters is what this production has done for musical theatre in its staging, and how it has touched so many people in such a powerful and immediate way. Everyone I know who has seen it--from total theatre nuts to people who hadn't even heard of the show before--has come away from it being deeply affected in some way, and this production's ability to reach such a range of people is amazing. I love this show so much and am heartbroken it's closing so soon--especially after its win, especially after Raúl's loss--but I feel so grateful that there's a place on Broadway for something like that, and that so many people got to see Raúl give what probably is the performance of his life.

I am really going to miss this show.

A friend of mine told me she came across a piece on Raúl (with a photo she thinks is new) in a recent issue; she thought she had a copy, but can't seem to find it. She says she thinks it was the May issue, and that it had someone named Veronica Castro on the cover. Does anyone happen to have a copy that they'd be able to scan or something? I'm kind of curious to see it now!

Obsessive newby here :)
Just mentioning that for the Tony awards broadcast, Raul will be singing (big surprise)Being Alive. The scandal, of course, is that they're using the original orchestrations instead of Mary-Mitchell Cambell's *GASP*, so the whole cast won't be on stage.
