Welcome to
stop_the_badfic! Here, I will provide information and a few rules to make this place as pleasant as possible.
What is this community?
Right. Well. As an avid reader (and writer) of fanfiction for a great many fandoms, the bane of my existence is that most odious of creatures, the Badfic. Other fanfiction readers (and writers) are doubtless aware of Badfic, but for those that aren't, Badfic is as it says: bad fic. I'm not just talking uninteresting or unoriginal, here, although those are both factors. I'm talking little to no thought for characterisation, no plot, bad grammar, a complete inability to spell, the presence of 'txtspk', and, of course, the dreaded songfic. And that's just for starters. Sound familiar?
Badfic, alas, seems to permeate in the larger fandoms. If you've never gone two days without finding something horrible on your favourite fanfiction site, then this is the place to you.
stop_the_badfic aims to find the most horrible, awful, heinously bad pieces of fanfic, and complain about them, at length, in much the same vein as
peevish and
u_make_lj_suck, both of which are inspirations for this community. Incidentally, if you're joining this one, you might as well join them, too...
Okay, so why?
Because it's funny. And because sometimes you just want to take the Badfic author and strangle them. Or maybe personally flaming something isn't your style even when it deserves it. This is the place to vent that frustration.
How?
Find a fic (either on purpose, one you've found once before, or one you've stumbled across by accident) and yell about it. Although I ask that you follow this format, for tidiness' sake:
- Where you found it from (a website, message board, email, blog, etc.)
- What fandom it's meant to be for. Mainly so its badness can be proved in terms of that fandom's characters/canon. Also, other fans of that particular fandom can pounce on it without having to guess first, and the ignorant can lightly step over it, or be mildly confused :)
- The Title. They're half the fun. Bonus points if said title is spelt wrong.
- SPOILER WARNINGS! Especially for anything that has yet to air on either side of the pond. If it's spoiler-y, LJ-cut it.
- Supposed genre of fic (e.g. angst, romance, parody, humour, etc.)
- Rating. If R or NC-17, LJ-cut, and give a warning.
- Pairing (if any)
- A small snippet of it. If it's a short fic (and in my experience, they usually are), then you can post the whole thing, but please LJ-cut it. (Information on how can be found right here.)
- Your bitch/rant/nitpick/whatever, which can either be within the snippet itself, or just a generalised comment on the end. Or if it's self-explanatory, you may not even need one...
Are there any other rules?
Only a few...
1) Much as it's tempting, I'm sure, please do not post any URLs to Badfics, especially if you find them anywhere on livejournal, because the latter, at least, is against the TOS. Post a link to the site you found it on, if you must, and allow people to find it that way. If anyone is desperate to read it, leave a comment asking the person to email you the URL. I don't want to be accused of mass-flames on people's fics.
2) If you're a beta-reader who's received something horrible, I would ask you not to use it as fodder for this community. People who ask for betas are at least making an effort; the Badfic herein should be from those who obviously have not.
3) Don't post a fic just because it goes against your particular character/pairing preference.
4) Please remember that this is just for fun and don't take it too seriously. Fanfic in itself is a controversial subject, just as inner-fandom conflict does occur. As such, flamewars of any kind will be deleted, and the flamers warned or banned as appropriate.
All of that being said, I hope everyone enjoys the community. Let the Quest Against Badfic commence!
P.S: I have included a few fandoms in the interests, below, that have, in my experience, been wonderful sources of Badfic. Any others that prove fruitful - or any that people want me to add - will be included.
P.P.S: I have also decided that this place will be the ranting (play)ground for those that get frustrated with fanfic.net and its various random outages, problems, slowness, etc. Since I reckon most of the fics are going to originate there, it seems apt...
