Sacramento Zine Library [08 Jul 2009|02:03pm]

allforchoice
Hello everyone!

I've been working on trying to start a zine library here in Sacramento for some time now, but rent prices kept getting in the way of my plans.

Fortunatly, I have found a way to make this work, although it is somewhat unconventional...

The cafe I work at is closed from 3pm to 6pm during the week, so that is where the library will be held. I am pretty much going to put bookshelves on tables and make the best of this FREE location until I find something better.

I will be going on a trip in about a week, so the library will be open the minute I get back on August 10th.

I have been working on a collection for some time, but the more the merrier! If you would like to send zines, that is awesome and you can send them to:

Luna's Cafe
c/o Sacramento Zine Library
1414 16th St
Sacramento, CA 95814-5004

I'll post some pictures once it's open!

Thanks for Reading!
Heather

2009 IPRC Youth Zine Camp! [06 Jul 2009|08:28am]

thinkbettersick

I thought I might pass this on if you know any young people or are a young person in Portland and might want to check this out.

Zine Camp 2009!
Each summer, the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) hosts a group of youngsters for five sessions of day camp. During camp, the participants learn the how’s and whys of self-publishing, the history of zine making and technical skills in print arts and independent publishing. Each camper will make their own zine, meet real live zinesters, participate in a zine reading and attend the 9th annual Portland Zine Symposium as tablers.

The camp is located downtown at the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in downtown Portland. There are two camps this year; Uncensored Youth and Zine Teens. The Teens group will meet from 12-4pm on Tuesdays and Fridays July 7th through the 24th, and the Youth will meet from 11-3 July 20th thru the 24th. The cost of camp is $125 with scholarships available.
Please contact A.M. O’Malley, IPRC Program Coordinator, at 503-827-0249 or iprcworkshops@gmail.com

happy international zine month! [05 Jul 2009|09:04pm]

hello_amber
Culture Slut is a perzine all about feminism, adventures and love. Fight Boredom is a comp zine all about small-town life and, uh, fighting boredom. You can purchase these zines at my Etsy shop, Paypal to polaroid.panic@gmail.com or mail well-concealed cash to:

Amber Forrester
10124 Ave. Hébert #8
Montréal, Québec
H1H 3W6 Canada

I've reduced the prices of all my zines by 50% until August 1st, 2009. Most zines are only a dollar, some are even less. My full-colour Polaroid photography zine has been reduced to three dollars. Now is the time to pick up a copy if you haven't already! Soon I'll be adding some ephemera packs and vintage Polaroid cameras to the mix. I've reduced the prices in order to celebrate the "holiday" and encourage more people to get into the zine scene. For more zine-y goodness, you can check out my blog here. It's got zine reviews a-plenty and updates on my own work. Enjoy!

What are you doing to celebrate International Zine Month?

Queer Zine Archive at Gerber-Hart Library [01 Jul 2009|12:40pm]

scowlette
I have decided, after much consideration, to start a physical zine archive as part of Gerber-Hart. They currently don't have any zines. In fact, I would say much of their material (all but a small portion of which has been donated) leans towards the more mainstream LG(BT) population.

I will be donating all my queer zines as part of this project. If you have any queer zines to donate that would be awesome. I will work on cataloging this project for two years while I am in grad school and then will donate the whole project to Gerber-Hart where it will become part of their non-circulating materials.

More info about Gerber-Hart can be found here: http://www.gerberhart.org/

I am looking for lesbian, gay, trans, queer, bisexual, questioning, and intersex zines covering all subject matter including (but not limited to) political, personal, identity, music, and erotica.

Zines can be sent to:
Jami Thompson
c/o Steve Thompson
5210 N. Magnolia
Chicago, IL 60647

questions and contact: queerzines@gmail.com

Hey folks... [30 Jun 2009|08:05pm]

thinkbettersick
Alex your moderator here. It has been brought to my attention that there have been a lot of craft post here and I would like to remind you that this is NOT a craft community. This is a ZINE community.

That's not to say that zines can't be crafts or crafts can't be zines but blocks of soap and plush dolls that don't have words, pictures, staples, paper or even some form of printing on them just do not belong in this community. I mean, if you screen print stories with chocolate onto pancakes and bind them with licorice ropes then feel free to post them. I trust you know what a zine is or why would you join this communuty.

Also, I intended this community to be a bit more than yet another lj community to spam when you have a new issue.  I wanted it to be a community where we could come and discuss zine things or post a question about zines and get lots of answers. I guess the We Make Zine site is more of that now. but I'd still like for this community to be more.

That being said, tomorrow starts International Zine Month. What are your plans? Are you going to take part in the 24 hour zine thing? Are you going to put on or go to a zine event? Are you going to leave lots of zines around town on buses or in bathrooms for people to find? Teach a workshop at your local library? Pick a name in the phone book and send then a zine? Or maybe make your very first zine?

Whatever you are going to do for IZM I'd like to hear about it here!

Virgin #1 [25 Jun 2009|10:01pm]

virginzine
Virgin #1 is about my experiences and thoughts on being a 19 year old virgin. The first half is a brief history of my ‘love’ life so far and how I got to where I am. The second half covers a range of my thoughts, specifically struggling to find my place in the LGBT community and the reaction of my friends.

“I’m writing the zine I wanted to read. I read zines for two reasons; to learn and to relate. Basically I’m not getting any and never have had any. This doesn’t really bother me, but it bothers the rest of the world, and that reaction DOES bother me.”

1/4 sized, 18 pages, relatively text heavy

UK: £1 including postage

Europe: £1.25/1.50euros including postage

Rest of World: £1.60/$2.60

Paypal to: virginzine@gmail.com

I’d also be happy to trade.

Please email or comment with your email for a postal address.

(sorry for x-posting)

Looking for zinesters... [21 May 2009|08:29pm]

insaneartgurl
So I have this little art blog, and every week I feature a different artist.

The thing is I'd like to get away from the traditional 2D, to show there are people doing more than drawing a painting. And I'd love to give a zinester or two or more their own feature.

What I Need:
- a short interview I'll email you
- permission to post images of your work

What You Get:
- Links to your site, Etsy, blog, where ever you'd like
- Exposure

So anyone that wants a forum to talk about their work, why they love zines, and art, please drop me a line! anspadaro (at) gmail (dot) com

Thanks bunches!

paper trail distro news may 2009 [21 May 2009|02:01pm]

ciaradistro

learning to leave a paper trail zine distro

paper trail distro carries personal/political zines on topics like reproductive health, mental health, parenting, illness, death, bicycles, traveling, d.i.y. skillsharing, cultural inquiry, queer & trans issues, sex work, anti-racism, feminist issues, &...you get the gist. feel free to send zines for considerations! i'm not interested in poetry, music zines, most comics, or anything racist, sexist, classist, transphobic, & such forth...but if you think you'd fit in, send zines to:

ciara xyerra
12 lincoln ave. #3
somerville ma 02145

i added seven new items to the distro last month (& more are coming in everyday!):

culture slut#17/telegram ma'am #17 split zine between twin sisters, about finding out they have a secret older half-sister, changing their names in order to sever ties with their estranged father, the concept of "home," & more. very different but very personal zines.

dirty love #2 intimate personal zine about self-acceptance, recovering from christian fundamentalism, body love, queer pride, love, & youth mentoring. gorgeous construction with red acrdstock covers, fastened with tiny brads.

doctrinal expletives #4 badass personal/political zine with snarky & smart interrogations of green consumption, annoying crap "allies" do, the romanticization of the white working class, & a lot more. scathing & insightful.

love letters to monsters #2 my new perzine, about coming to terms with being an adult, a very unapolgetic abortion story, a critique of the cult of consent, five years organizing an annual skillshare conference, & more. very text-heavy with hand-colored covers.

motor city kitty #11 small personal zine about coming to terms with queer identity, a first attempt at a distance bike ride, friendship & more. charming illustrated cut & paste layout.

motor city kitty #12 more about queer identity & how the label "bisexual" just doesn't fit, giving up drinking, growing up wiccan, & a lot more. action-packed for its size.

olly olly oxenfree #4 a fantastically informative & instructive zine on how to play over a dozen different dice games. learn how to keep score, gambling etiquette, slang, & more!

also! chelsea from "nothing rhymes" zine did an interview for the distro, all about knitting, her zine-making process, tabling at shows, crafting for social change, & more! click the link to see the interview archives!

& i'll be tabling the distro at two zine fairs this summer:
saturday, june 27 at the new york zine fest at the brooklyn lyceum, 12-7pm.

friday & saturday, july 24 & 25 at the portland zine symposium at portland state university.
