Jul. 9th, 2009 @ 01:05 pm A plea to all animal lovers ....
Current Mood: hopeful

I'm not sure if this appropriate for this forum. If not, please feel free to remove it. =)

The St. Charles Humane Society is one of only a handful of NO-KILL animal shelters in the S. Louis area, and they are desperately in need of funding/donations. Without some kind of help, they are seriously in danger of closing their doors within a few months.

While I am neither a member, nor an employee of the St. Charles Humane Society I have worked in animal rescue for the last 7 years, and it is a cause very near and dear to my heart.

It would be tragic to loose such a wonderful animal rescue group in an area that badly needs their services and influence.

Obviously they are doing their own fund raising, but I would like to do more.

I know that times are tough and everyone has had to tighten their belt, but any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Also anyone with any corporate connections, who might be able to get them to donate, would be great.

I am also looking for any type of fund raising ideas ... either something I could implement on my own, or work on as a group with other interested people.

Thank you for your time and consideration. =)

Webster Groves man killed in crash was considered a leader in local 'techno' music scene
By Carolyn Tuft
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
07/08/2009

UPDATED: 10:12 A.M. with biographical information

ST. LOUIS -- The Webster Groves man killed in a crash on Interstate 44 on Wednesday was considered a leader in the St. Louis 'techno electro' disc jockey scene.

Kyle Torretta, 32, of Webster Groves, was killed after getting off work from his day job as a computer technician in the crash along Interstate 44 that snarled traffic Wednesday evening for miles.

Police said that Torretta was driving west on Interstate 44 near Grand Avenue when he attempted to move into another lane. He then realized that another vehicle was in that lane and steered right.

Torretta then lost control of his car, left the highway, went into the grass, across the feeder road and landed upside down on Lafayette Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Torretta was married to Jennifer Weigner, an accountant. The two had been a couple for about a decade and married last year.

Torretta, who grew up in south St. Louis, graduated from DeSmet Jesuit High School. In the early 1990s, he moved to Chicago, then returned to St. Louis where he created music in nightclubs and warehouse parties in the St. Louis area.

What his fans and fellow musicians say made him a unique musician in that genre was that he did not use a computer laptop to create his music. Instead, he used drum machines and other gear to create a live production of music, said friend and fellow musician Dan Robitaille, 37, of St. Louis.

"It really set him apart from everyone else," Robitaille said Thursday morning after getting the news of Torretta's death. "It makes this all even more tragic because he was far and beyond where everyone else in our music scene was at."

Torretta was supposed to perform this Saturday at the Mercury nightclub in downtown St. Louis. The lounge is in the Cupples Station Loft Apartment complex.

"Everybody was looking forward to it," Robitaille said. "It's so sad."

Jul. 5th, 2009 @ 09:36 pm Affordable Moving help?
I need to move at the end of the month and it is looking like trying to wrangle up friends and family with trucks is too much of a pain in the rear and it is stressing me out. Any recommendations on movers who are affordable? I am living in an attic currently so i don't really have a whole houseworth of stuff at all. It is just one big room. I don't even have a bed room set or any heavy furniture. It will be mostly boxes and totes with a few pieces of furniture thrown in (dining room table and chairs, 2 small dressers, a stereo cabinet and a few shelves).

Any idea how much this should cost me? I have an 8 month old so I can help some but not the entire time if she gets needy. So I feel bad asking friends and family to help me again especially not knowing who will show up when.

I called Two Men and Truck and they said $124/hour on saturday or sunday and $99/hour m-f but they would not say how long it might take and that worries me because I really do not have extra money right now. It's only one load so I can't imagine it taking a long time but if the guys work slowly they get more money. :/

Suggestions?

Jul. 2nd, 2009 @ 06:27 pm Page & Woodson Red Light Cameras
Hi all,

Anyone have any experience or knowledge of the cameras that are installed at the intersection at Page and Woodson?

Any ideas of the left turn lane from Page northbound (heading toward 170) onto Woodson is monitored?

Asking, because, I think I ran the red tonight, but I've seen people run plenty of reds there, and never have seen the cameras flash--unlike the ones at 270 and Olive which you can see flash in bright sunshine.

Any info is appreciated! Thanks.

Current Mood: curious
My love's birthday is Friday, but he's working so I'd like to take him someplace special for the 4th of July on Saturday. I thought I'd ask this lovely community about their favorite spots in the area for a fireworks show. I'm not interested in going downtown; I'd much prefer a more serene location with possibility of romantic spots and pretty lights. Any suggestions?

Jun. 29th, 2009 @ 05:58 pm 1812 Overture (complete with cannon fire) in Tower Grove Park tonight
From the RFT:

Everyone is familiar with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Yes, the one with the cannons. Sixteen cannon shots are written into the score, and they're to be fired in a two-minute span — it's known in the biz as "a big finish." Strangely, the management of some concert halls does not allow the discharge of artillery indoors, and so either prerecorded shots are played or clever drumwork substitutes. But should we be accepting substitutes on this adopted piece of Americana? For although the 1812 Overture was written to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon, it has become a staple of Fourth of July celebrations. Tonight, in its first Musical Mondays concert of the season, the Compton Heights Concert Band performs its traditional Tribute to July Fourth with a stirring performance of the 1812 Overture — and the musicians will be accompanied by real cannons. Partly because they perform outdoors in Tower Grove Park (4256 Magnolia Avenue; 314-776-2227 or www.chband.org), and partly because they can. If you have access to a cannon, it'd be foolish to not take advantage. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., and admission is free.

Jun. 28th, 2009 @ 05:42 pm FYI for those who use Metro
From the press release sent out this week (all wording theirs):

Metro's Transit Service Restoration Plan to be Implemented on August 3, 2009

"This has been a 'good news week' for St. Louis regional transit riders," reported Ray Friem, Metro's Chief Operating Officer of Transit Services, at today's regular meeting of the Metro Board of Commissioners.

Friem was referring to Governor Jay Nixon's signing of a Missouri bill yesterday that provides $12 million in emergency transit funding for Metro. The funding means a partial restoration of the transit service that was cut on March 30.

Friem also pointed out that the transit restoration plan he presented to the Board has been enhanced by the arrival of transit dollars that are coming from two federal programs.

A bill signed by President Obama this week contains language allowing the nation's transit providers to use 10 percent of the funding they received as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for transit operating costs. This will allow Metro to apply up to $4.1 million toward new transit service.

Additionally, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced this week that $7.5 million in federal funding will also be provided to Metro over the next two years.

All of these resources will help transit riders by restoring a portion of the transit service that was lost in March. "Metro's restoration plan for spending the Missouri funding allows Metro to return one-third of the transit service we were forced to cut in March. The additional federal dollars helps us expand the plan, including adding improvements to Metro Call-A-Ride service for elderly and disabled customers," said Friem.

Friem warned that this good news for transit is a short-term solution to this regional transit crisis. "Without a new and permanent funding source, we will experience deeper transit service cuts in 2010."

Visit www.metrostlouis.org to learn more about Metro's Partial Service Restoration Plan, which is scheduled to be implemented on August 3. Final timetables and schedules for the new, restored, and modified transit service will be posted on Metro's website as soon as they are available.

Jun. 27th, 2009 @ 04:38 pm free things to do this summer
My next door neighbor's son was asking me about free things to do in the city this summer. I told him about Live on the Levee and about the international fair thing over in Tower Grove Park (but said that I couldn't remember exactly when it was).

He mentioned that he just took his little girl--about three or so to the Ren Faire, so I also told him about the Pirate Fest coming up in September.

But is there anything else going on around the area that I can pass along?

Jun. 26th, 2009 @ 11:32 am Julnawrimo
St. Louis writers!

If you've heard of Nanowrimo, you can probably guess what Julnawrimo is. Our subtitle: Because there's nothing good on TV in July.

You can find out more at [info]julnawrimo. We are also on Twitter and Facebook. Check out any of the above for details on what we're doing and why.

Think of it this way: you may make 50,000 words. You may not. But regardless, they are words you would not have if you didn't try. What, you got something better to do in July?

Our kickoff write-in will be at Denny's in Glen Carbon, on the Illinois side. I am open to having future write-ins at other locations, if people can send me suggestions, but since the only comment I've gotten is to set it on the east side, I'm gonna pick the place that has internet, plenty of space and doesn't care how long we stay.

So come to the Denny's on Route 159 in Glen Carbon on Wednesday evening and we'll kick off together. (Directions below for cityfolk.) I'll be there about 6 p.m. - feel free to be there earlier if you wish. We'll be there as long as we can keep writing.

1,617 words or bust!

Directions:
From the I-270 bridge: Keep going east. The second exit past I-255 is Illinois Route 159. Take that exit and turn left at the light. Denny's will be on your right within a mile or two.

From the Poplar Street bridge: Take I-55/70 north to I-255. Take I-255 north to I-270. Take I-270 east to the second exit, which is Illinois Route 159. Turn left at the light. Denny's will be on your right within a mile or two.

Jun. 23rd, 2009 @ 09:52 pm St Louis advice?
Hello from Toronto!

A good friend of mine is leaving in a few days for St. Louis, will be there for about three weeks, knows nothing about the city, and would love some advice if you have a second to chip in your two cents.

She will be staying at a hotel at 525 S. Jefferson, right by highway 40, and will be working an event at 701 Convention Plaza.

Since she's an event coordinator, she's looking for all kinds of info including but not limited to:

- restaurants that will deliver lunch (including menus)
- any great restaurants for dinner
- shopping in the area (a Target included)
- the nearest grocery store, drug store and hardware store
- cool bars/clubs in the area
- any info about the gay/lesbian scene in the city
- anything that may be useful!

I'm going to start perusing the community to see what I can come up with for her, but any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you so much :)

So I'm 100000000000000% sure this question has been asked before, but our tag directory is kind of janky and I can't find it.

I like Whole Foods but I hate driving through the weird Brentwoody traffic to get there. Where can I get yummy soy products and natural type stuffs that's closer to, or in the city? I know there are a few small places (there's one on Euclid? And I think there is one right off of S. Grand? And something on Morgan Ford? I dunno), but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions or favorites...

Thanks in advance!
