    Poll on selling Howard's books
Please check out the poll in my LJ if you can help Howard DeVore's family figure out how to sell the majority of his garage full of books to deserving fans for a low price....

One time Howard found me two or three boxes of old prozines for cheap and I loved them, because I always had something to stuff in my bag when I went on a trip, and wouldn't care if I left one on a plane.

The Golden Anniversary of Detention the 17th Worldcon in Detroit MI September 4 to 7, 1959
I got to thinking about how this is the 50th Anniversary Year of the only worldcon hosted in Detroit Michigan my science fiction hometown. Here are some facts and memories I found on the net and as the year goes on I will probably post more.

The 17th World Science Fiction Convention, also known as Detention, was held 4–7 September 1959 at the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Here is a picture of the banquet:

    http://www.smithway.org/hugos/detroit_59/detroit_59.htm

    The chairmen were:

Roger Sims “And it is my considered opinion that this loss to Eisenhower, who became President for the next eight years, was the cause of the poor turn out for Detention, the 1959 Worldcon! Because it was Eisenhower's economic policies that were responsible for the dismal job outlook at the end of the 1950s.”

    Fred Prophet.

Howard Devore was Head of Publicity. "There will be a Worldcon in Detroit over my dead body."

They charged $2.00 admission for the weekend.

    The guests of honor were:

Poul Anderson (pro) paid his own way to and at the convention

John Berry (fan) was brought to North America by a special fan fund.

The toastmaster was Isaac Asimov "...with the assistance of Robert Bloch". Isaac Asimov had been listed as the Toastmaster in all promotional material prior to the convention. At the convention the program book added "...with the assistance of Robert Bloch" who acted as Asimov's foil at the banquet.

    Total attendance was 371.

    * The 1958 Hugo Awards were presented:

o Best Novel: A Case of Conscience by James Blish

o Best Novelette: "The Big Front Yard" by Clifford D. Simak

    Commentary from http://thefix-online.com/features/rocket-science-1958-1959/

When I think of Clifford D. Simak (1904 – 1988), two novels leap to mind: Way Station and City. “The Big Front Yard” has much in common with Way Station, which also won a Hugo (Best Novel, 1964).

The gorgeous Frank Kelly Freas cover of Astounding Science Fiction, Oct. 1958, shows Hiram Taine holding a paint can while talking to an alien that looks remarkably like Kelsey Grammar in X-Men 3. Hiram calls himself a “handyman” and an “antiques salesman,” but his most prized title is “Yankee trader.” He buys things, he sells things, and he talks people in and out of stuff daily.

One day, someone brings him a TV to fix. He puts it in the basement, where he plans to get to it, only he never does because something beats him to it. Not only does the TV appear to fix itself, but it’s improved in the repair, displaying vibrant color instead of black and white. From there, things change every day in Hiram’s home, until a whole alien world opens for him to explore.

Simak’s prose is crystal clear and it flows easily. If faced with contact with a new world, the Earth would have no better representative than Hiram Taine—government bureaucrats may step out of the way, please. Like I said earlier, Simak returns to this theme in a (slightly) larger fashion in Way Station, but I wouldn’t hesitate to say that he’s at his very best with this one.

o Best Short Story: "That Hell-Bound Train" by Robert Bloch

    Commentary from http://thefix-online.com/features/rocket-science-1958-1959/

I’m not certain when fantasy and science fiction got grouped together as sister genres, but this fantasy story by Robert Bloch (1917 – 1994) clearly shows that the Hugo Award from its earliest years was not an award given exclusively to science fiction.

Bloch is known for lots of great horror fiction, and he’s also known for lots of great television scripts. “That Hell-Bound Train” was awarded the Hugo in the same year that Bloch published Psycho, the novel that was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock into the famous film in 1960.

The story is a “deal-with-the-devil” story, not an unfamiliar formula even in 1959. What makes this story transcendent (and it is) is the exploration of what the definition of “a good life” is. Could you pinpoint a moment of happiness while it’s happening? Read this story! It’s brilliant.

o Best Professional Artist: Frank Kelly Freas

    o Best Professional Magazine: F&SF

More information on the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Shelby_Hotel

The DoubleTree Guest Suites Fort Shelby/Detroit Downtown opened its doors in 1916. In 1951 it was renamed the "Pick Fort Shelby" when it was bought out by the Albert Pick Hotels Company. It stands at the corner of 1st Street and West Lafayette Boulevard. Its address is 525 West Lafayette Boulevard. It stands at 22 stories in height, with one basement floor, for a total of 23. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. The original 1916 building was designed by Schmidt, Garden & Martin and the 1927 addition by Albert Kahn. It has just reopened as a suites hotel and conference centre.

Fan David Kyle also attended and had this to say:

“The best drinking party I ever enjoyed took place at the Detention, the 1959 Detroit Worldcon. The invitation read: '10pm Cass Room, Bheer Party. Bring your Bheer Credits. Meet your favorite authors. Light Bheer, Dark Bheer, Rhoot Bheer. The Detention Committee is host -- if you can still read this, go find a party.' After the masquerade -- which unlike today's affairs was simple, brief, and over with before eleven o'clock -- pitchers of beer were placed on tables. Ruth began a bridge game with Detention co-chairmen Roger Sims and Fred Prophet, and (probably) Carolyn Hickman while I kibitzed. About eleven o'clock, a panel began in the next room, which may well have been the longest-running worldcon panel of all time. It went on hour after hour into the night... and so did the card game. Various persons would wander in from the panel and report its progress to the bheer drinking players, then wander back. The panel members were in a perpetual state of flux. Several times I rotated in and out as a panel member or spectator, catching Ruth's score and trying to slake my unquenchable thirst. The pitchers of beer seemed unending. It was the best dark beer -- dark bheer, that is -- I have ever drunk (and I speak as a veteran resident of England). That night is memorable -- ask anyone who was there!” from http://jophan.org/mimosa/m15/kyle.htm

    Confusion Traffic Warning
    Hey all,
they are working on the bridge just west of the hotel. They have big beaver down to 1 lane and it's back up the off ramp and big beaver to livernois and it's only 1:30. I suggest every one get off at Rochester and take 15 mile(maple) west to crocks and come back east and you can go straight through the west bound lane into the hotel. Else you could be stuck in a line up for some time. No clue if they are closing down to one lane on Saturday or not.

Artists Alley! Amazing Authors! Steampunk Costuming! Wheeeeee!
Did you know we're doing an Artist Alley this year? Stop by Saturday 11 am - 6pm to talk one-on-one with artists. Artists participating in that and the art show as a whole are now listed here

The Masquerade is having a special Steampunk category and all contestants will get a special steampunk gear charm made by local bead and tile artist Melanie Brooks! Costumers should check out her LJ, [info]earthenwood, for steampunk inspiration.

    gear charms!

We also have short bios of many of the authors who will be on programming up on the web and the programs for gaming and the b-movie rooms are posted via google calendar here (scroll to the bottom) and here.

The Dealer's room is scheduled to open at 3 pm Friday and Gaming demos start at 4, so there will be something to do right away whenever you get to ConFusion.

We're sorry we don't have the whole program posted yet. We promise to have it online by Monday night at the latest. But check out the front page of the web site for exciting announcements.

Don't forget that you'll be able to nominate Guests of Honor for 2011 at ConFusion, so before you come out take a look at your bookshelves, fanzines, and old convention programs, and think about what authors, artists, scientists and fans you'd love to see on our docket two years from now - the sky's the limit!

    cheers,

The city of Livonia has declared a snow emergency until tomorrow, which
means that if you show up at our house and park on the street (which

that is precisely the outcome we're looking for.
