AboutSteampunk is a popular place to play now, and as such debate is arising about what it is and what it isn't. There are tensions about how much to take from the history that inspires it, and what baggage comes with it. A really interesting talk broke out on Steamfashion, about politics, but it also veering into a discussion about clothing, orientalism, colonialism, class, and race prejudice, and the fact that there are precious few places where such discussion was allowed. Then it got deleted... because it was off topic. I decided I wanted a place to talk about this stuff.... so here we are.
So, some ground rules.
I am aware that I may be setting myself up for failure- and that we might just wind up degenerating into flamewars and being the "star of the week" on fandom_wank. I really don't want that to happen. Even though this IS the internet, i am hoping that we can have some real discussions, because there are some cool and interesting things to talk about.
There are MANY hot button topics about which people feel very strongly. I want this to be a safe place to talk and think, this is a discussion forum, not a boxing ring. Please treat each other like reasonable adults, despite any evidence to the contrary. You may run into people with whom you disagree, and I am going to ask to to talk and debate- but when it's done, you may have to agree to disagree. That said.... hate speech, persistent racist and sexist speech will get you banned. (I am willing to give folks the benefit of the doubt, we all say dumbass, ignorant or unintentionally hurtful things from time to time. Say your Mea Culpas, and we can move on.)
I expect to be a light handed moderator, but I will freeze threads and ban folks as I see the need.
Let see if we can do this.
