This isn't intended to spark an "omg, it's not steampunk" thread, but it doesn't strike me as especially steampunk.

However, it does strike me as an example of tasteful and attractive male fashion. :) Thanks for posting, Amelia G's a great photographer with some lovely subjects.

Well, we're certainly not going to start said thread, but I do feel that it is just as steampunk as most things that are posted to this group.

I do agree, however, that it is also a wonderful example of male fashion. I wish more men dressed so respectably. Just because we're straight doesn't mean we have to look unkempt and terrible.

I love the combination of subcultural fashion (purple hair, bondage cuff) with a brocade waistcoat and spectacles. It's quite dashing!

Which reminds me...I can't wait for this month's Dances of Vice! A good dress-up is in order.

We'll see if I'm able to go. I'm extremely busy at the moment, although I suppose I have been for the past couple of months anyway!

Pretty, but I don't see what's steampunk about it. More gothic/victorian- there's no kind of retrofuture whimsy, nothing to suggest airships passing in the night.

Well let's be honest here, while a little more technology would be nice it's certainly no more "off-topic" than many of the other pictures posted to this community (one which, I might add, generally are approved of as being "steampunk"). The only real difference here is that this picture is depicting a more aristocratic outfit than most we've seen until now, but that certainly doesn't disqualify it from being steampunk.

What it really suggests is a late 20th century that still uses steam age fashion, which is one perfectly legitimate interpretation of steampunk.

I've learned to just skim past steamfashion unless something about it *really* grabs my attention, as so much of it is just "here's something vaguely Victorian, that's the same as steampunk".
Victoriana is... well, Victorian. This image to me suggests holding onto Victorian fashion and doing up the hair, which a good 50% of goths on this planet do anyway- doesn't make goths Steampunk.
Steampunk, to me, has a lot more advancement and mad science and maybe even a bit of magic to it in an Aetherpowered sort of way. There is no madness or science or tech to this image.
...
but well... I have a very finely tuned personal aesthetic, and tend to believe in dividing lines.

As a historian I have a very healthy respect for dividing lines myself, but I'm willing to acknowledge that it is sometimes very difficult to draw the line between steampunk and neo-Victorian as far as fashion is concerned. After all, steampunk fashion is quite literally the fashion of a steampunk environment. While personal technology will be more likely to be widespread and incorporated into fashion in a steampunk world, it is not absolutely essential: even today, where technology is at least as prolific as it would be in the steampunk counterpart, not all people incorporate the latest technology into their wardrobe. I'm willing to grant some extra leniency, at least at this formative stage of steampunk fashion. I would rather someone look good but risk being "only neo-Victorian" than the opposite.

And besides, wearing goggles on a top hat doesn't make someone steampunk; not wearing goggles doesn't reduce someone to "neo-Victorian."

Dashing waistcoat, though. [/annoying grammar naziness].

That brocade is delicious, and I LOVE the use of a ring on the necktie!

Don't mind the steamsnobs. If they couldn't look down on others, they wouldn't have a reason to exist.

That is constructed entirely of awesome. I love the "straighter" Victorian-style outfits with the mildly outrageous hair. Definitely one of my favourite flavours of steampunk.

Feed me more of this! Pleeeease....

I think it's totally awesome. As far as the 'not steampunk' thing goes, bah. After all of the pictures we see here of hot-topic gothwear with goggles, it's downright refreshing to see an outfit with so much artistry and class. I see nothing wrong with putting some of the steam back in steampunk.

My favorite part is the gloves. Very classy. Steampunk needs more gloves.

I really like the whole Victorian-with-a-touch-of-wildness look so this is cool to me! As for it not being steampunk enough, not everyone in a steampunk world has to be an explorer, mad scientist or airship crewmember. Surely there are at least some people sitting around in stuffy, cluttered drawing rooms having their every whim attended to by overworked maids.

I think that's an oustanding outfit, and a prime example of mens fashion for this genre.

The definitions of "Steam Fashion" and "Steam CosPlay" are, IMHO, far too blurred now.

I've always, since I first heard of Steampunk, looked at the fashion aspect as being exactly what is shown in the picture as posted - old styles (and in old, I mean, Victorian, Georgian, edwardian, etc), with something from the steam age, new, or even futuristic (mock cyber-implants, etc). However, just sticking some cogs onto your buttons does not, I feel, make it steampunk.

When it comes to adding "clockwork/steam" prosthetics, or making a "costume" for your "character", instead of making an "outfit" for a "night out", then I'd say you are heading into the realms of "Costume Play", or LARPing.

They are both entirely different from each other.

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, I think that when its done right, it looks right, regardless as to whether its a costume or an outfit. But:

I don't create a character.

I don't wear a costume.

I wear something that I like, and accessorise it in a manner that I see fit.

So, if I choose to wear an outfit that comprises a suit, waistcoat, a few chains or bondage straps and dye my hair blue, it's just my choice, not my character, thats being presented.

And Pleeeaaaaasssssse,

Stop putting it down for being "Too Goth", or "Too Whatever".

If it wasn't for Goths buying Victorian clothing and adding their own little touch of individuality, there wouldn't have been a "steam" fashion, or "Neo-Victorian" movement in the first place.
