So, I ordered a handful of really really pretty vintage-style notions and a chatelaine (a device used by Victorian women to hold onto commonly used little items that elude capture from time to time, keys, seam rippers, etc.)  Very pretty little things.

They are crap.

I accidentally ordered two chatelaines, which is good.  The first one had the pin clasp glued shut, and when I tried to open it, the pin fell off.  The second one had a faulty clasp, which broke.  I cannibalized a new clasp off the pinless one, so that was fixed.  Then, the pin fell off the fixed one.  I dropped the measuring tape and it popped open.  The seam ripper and pincushion are fine (knock on wood.)

Thankfully, the company I ordered them from has fantastic customer service and charged back my money, not requiring me to mail them back on my dime.  So, Crafts Etc. customer service = good. I'd gladly give them another try. Vintage Impressions = touch and go at best. Damned shame, cuz they're gorgeous.  I'm going to do my best to fix the chatelaine and measuring tape with some JB Weld, do it right.

Oh, lame! Those looked really cool on the website. Are they good otherwise, or is just the pins that are chintzy? Because that can be fixed, but if it's crap overall, then that's too bad.

I'll probably replace the clasps, as they are really crap base metal, but the chains and the chain connector seem sturdy enough. Whether the connector to the bottom of the chatelaine holds through wear...I'm not holding my breath, and may just make myself a new upper part out of actual brass. The seam ripper has a friction fit top, so I may try to reinforce that somehow. The tape measure, as I said, opens up rather easily so I'll be gluing that. The circular pincushion has a very wiggly seam on part of it, but that's not anything that hampers function. The chatelaine is the one with the most problems, so buyer beware.

If nothing else, it's inspired me to consider making my own chatelaines to put up on Etsy, made out of real metal and intended to take the weight of actual notions.

I have seen those at craft stores too.

i remember looking at those glass needlecases the first time this was bruited about here and thinking they'd make interesting whatnots for an itinerant thaumaturge character, assuming anyone has one.

i have an antique pewter chatelaine circa 1860's, but i hesitate to put modern 'vintage-esque' notions on it because (a) they wouldn't match and (b) i distrust the quality. which means all i have on it is a pair of pewter scissors, but i knew it was going to take a long time to find notions to match it anyway.

I'm assuming that you have done business with Crafts Etc. before and have received quality items, but it was only these products that are shoddy. Otherwise, I'm confused by the good rating.

The good was mostly because the customer service person sounded genuinely horrified by my experience, immediately took the cost of both chatelaines off my credit card, and told me not to bother sending them back...and she'd send a third one if I wanted her to. I'd class that as good customer service. As for their other merchandise...don't know.

I wondered if beyond customer service they had good products. I could only imagine always shopping with them, always having good customer service, but everything breaks or is DOA.

I guess getting free broken stuff could be a good reason to patronize a place :/

Heh, yeah. I amended the post to reflect it. Might give them another go sometime...they have some purse clasps I could use for some other projects. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

This is something that is really waiting for a remake. The jewelery skills needed to make one would be pretty basic, you could make it out of precious metal clay, some jump rings, chain and necklace clasps.

That's what I figured, though I was planning on using brass. I do jewelry and metalwork as a sideline. :)
