Belt resources

  • Oct. 11th, 2009 at 9:53 PM
I'm doing an archeologist/explorer costume, with safari jacket, pith helmet, etc. I'm looking for replica/vintage belts, particularly ones that go over the shoulder. I'm not even sure what these are called, and not having much luck with google et al.

Any suggestions for sites that sell such out there?

Thanks!

Are you looking for something like this?

... also (and more accurately) spelled bandolier. Another term to try for your searches!

Google for Sam Browne belts, and I think you'll find what you're describing.

Also check www.cheaperthandirt.com , they have a lovely belt called the Triple K Ranger Belt. They even carry leather belts that will hold shotgun shells. Pretty cool.

I seriously suggest Goodwill and any second hand thrift stores nearby you. I have a couple belts that are totally steamy looking for like a buck each.

archaeologist, with an a. the missing a was done with the introduction of new archeology and isn't time-appropriate in the least.

and if you have trouble finding the bandoleer, try army surplus stores (at least, if you are in the US)

I got my Sam Browne belt at Sportsman's Guide for $30. Order it a little large, though.

Seconding the suggestion to check army/navy surplus stores. Not precisely period-accurate, since the stuff for sale typically dates from WWII onwards, but since you say you'd be okay with replica items, you may well find something close to what you're looking for.

I've picked up a lot of my steampunk accessories from this ebay store--I own two of these harnesses, and find them damned useful (though be advised that you might want to clean the verdegris off some of the brass/copper bolts and such before wearing with anything white).

Leather ammo pouches can be hard to come by. Most of what I find at gun shows are the surplus Russian Mosin-nagant pouches that don't look very leathery. Doesn't look very good for the steampunk tool belt or bandoleer. However, on e-bay I found a lot of 16 Yugoslavian Mauser M48 ammo pouches. Yay! I'll have them early next week and will replace the Mosin-nagant pouches I already have on my belt

I also found a lot of 6 pouches that I didn't bid on. But you can.
