Was at Marcon in Columbus, OH this weekend and there was a significant steamy presence, many not associated with any club or organized presence. Just lots of steamyness. I purchased a pith helmet from The Blonde Swan hat boutique as a foundation for my next steampunk costume. Got a really good idea for a Teslatronic electrified foil. Met new people. Developed an explanation as to why goggles are the basic foundation of any steampunk costume.
Why? I think it's something to do with 19th Century technology being somewhat inherently dangerous. Gears and pistons and myriad moving parts. Coal soot, steam and hot lubricating oil. Safety goggles seem to be a necessity for any gear jockey or mad scientist. There are also airship pirates and engineers of experimental heavier-than-air flying machines who need to protect their eyes from prop-wash debris. Cyberpunk's mirrorshades came with the phrase “The future's so bright, you have to wear sunglasses.” Steampunk seems to come with the phrase, “The machines of the future will put your eye out, so employ appropriate ocular safety devices.”
I was approached in the hallway by someone encouraging me to come next year, hoping that a strong steampunk presence and fundraising effort will be able to get them to book Dr. Steel for 2011.

I envision this on a cross-stitch sampler for some reason. Had me laughing out loud, seriously.
Indeed. My initial thought is "steampunk lightsaber." Much like all the fashionable Jedi are wearing these days, except steamy. Of course, being Victorian, it would not have a laser blade, or whatever magneto-plasmic energy it is. It would be electric, with thanks to Nikola Tesla. Like a mega-stun gun or the Girl Genius bug zapper. (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.p
For highbrow Olympic style you could have a doublet with conductive points where it would arc if the "sword" came in close enough contact with the points, hence scoring a point.
I think it has most to do with the fact that Dr Steel is a side project for the artist so he puts a large price tag on coming to play at a event or show .

Hey, most guns are mass-produced...is it really unreasonable to have more than one person with the same model? :P
